Red Steel 2 confirmed and then denied
Allegedly this morning Red Steel 2 was confirmed at an event in Cannes and has since been denied by Ubisoft. Red Steel, a launch title for the Wii, was meant to show how the Wii could elevate the FPS genre -- that didn't happen. What Red Steel ended up being was a set of negative adjectives, but the belief (until about an hour ago) was that Ubisoft hoped to rectify that with the announcement of Red Steel 2. The game's rumored online mode had been confirmed and that's pretty much all the details we had about this title that doesn't exist ... officially.Although Ubisoft has already apologized for over-porting the Wii, we wish they'd have kept Red Steel in development for a bit longer (although it was clearly designed to make Wii launch). We're just going to have to wait until Metroid Prime to see what a fully designed Wii FPS will play like. If Metroid Prime falls on flat on Samus's helmet, we fear for the genre on the system.

People knew it was coming, i mean its Ubisoft
Especially considering that the game, despite its mediocrity, was a retail success

Yeah, RS was a disappointment in the controls dept. Hopefully RS2 will have it retooled.
Resident Evil 4, now there is a game that has the FPS (over-the-shoulder I guess) controls down right. Too bad it's not run-and-gun - I'm looking forward to MP3:C to see those work well.
FWIW, I think RE4 beats keyboard+mouse, and I've heard MP3:C controls are doing the same.

red steel2:rise of the rusted sword.

I know I'm going to be berrated no end for saying this, but red steels controls really connected with me. Sure the rest of the game was missing something (a lot of things) and the sword fighting just plain sucked but I think the concept and mechanic behind the actual shooting sometimes worked amazingly well.
Essentially I feel if Ubisoft take their time, really try and get everything working consistently, Red Steel 2 could have a lot of promise, and be a watershed moment in Wii FPS, leading by example after every western 3rd party predictably ignores Metroid's coming advances.
Crono @ Jun 27th 2007 4:52PM
I concurr with elmer. The controls in RS were fine, though a little sluggish. Its the art direction that sucked so bad. That and the inability to skip "cut scenes".

Yeah I ignored this game in wake of... every other game.
If 2 was good I would play it.
When we were in the store, my gf asked me "why don't you get this game? it sounds good"
"because it's an electronic miscarriage?"

Quick note to AW:
Last time I checked, the word "helmet" didn't have an N anywhere in it, but I could be wrong... I hear the letter N is making a comeback!
Red Steel didn't impress me. I didn't even get good vibes about it when it was demoed at E3, holding the gun "gangster style." I think FPS's will be difficult on the Wii, as innovative as it really is.
AssemblyLineHuman @ Jun 27th 2007 5:01PM
I like Red Steel's controls and art style. What I don't like is the ridiculous linearity and monotony of the game.

This weekend I was at a bar and I was talking to someone who works at Ubisoft. Red Steel 2 is definitely coming out. he even admitted that Red Steel was a rush job and that they were slightly dissappointed in how it turned out but were happy with the sales. This is going to be another worst kept secret by Ubisoft...like AC coming out on the 360.
Naota @ Jun 27th 2007 5:10PM
odd as it sounds i enjoyed Red Steel. Every so often some of my friends get together and do some 2v2.
Jake @ Jun 27th 2007 5:22PM
Red Steel sucks. Once a Wii game nails the run n' gun shooter, hopefully including online, you will never think about playing Red Steel again.
Seriously, there has not been a good Wii shooter yet. As much as you want to argue for Farcry, RS, or COD, there has not. This will be apparent once a good one comes out.
MP3 will be good, but I don't even know if it will have multiplayer. It will make the controls work, but what I really want to see is a shooter you can play with your friends online that has rock solid controls, decent gfx (art style), fun mechanics, etc.
Basically, a shooter that would have been good on PS2 or Xbox that also benefits from properly done controls. That will be sweet.

Whoopie! Another Red Steel that will suck.
Hater3000 @ Jun 27th 2007 8:01PM
If you ask me I think they are trying to create hype for this game, like
"Is coming" and then "Is not coming,is not coming, dont even dream about it is not coming" and then alright you want here Red steel 2.
Well the first one was crap so unless there is something worst than crap I think there is hope for Red steel 2..Again probably not.
Cuja @ Jun 28th 2007 2:23AM
Sword fighting and any other motion sensing was sluggish and had a few graphic glitches. FPS control was pretty good. I really enjoyed playing this game and I'm looking forward to playing RS2.
Grey Acumen @ Jun 28th 2007 8:21AM
Couple things to keep in mind.
Red Steel still sold well despite its mediocrity.
They'll make a sequel.
Metroid Prime 3 is one of the Big N's heavy hitters.
They won't let her out unless she's PERFECT.
RE4 turned out incredibly well despite being a port, showing that Wii is totally capable of FPS and that the Wii control style DOES improve the gameplay.
There is nothing keeping developers from making a good FPS except their own skill and knowledge.
Considering all these points together.
There is no reason to fear for the FPS genre on the Wii system.
Genius @ Jun 28th 2007 12:32PM
FWIW Red Steel only sold well because it was a launch title. Everybody knows launch titles sell well. You could take a piece of dog shit and stuff it in a pretty box and call it Super Fun Time Happy Days and as long as its labled as a launch title it will sell well, period.
