Behold the power of mud! Rally racer DiRT has sold globally 500,000 copies in its first week of release, according to Codemasters. The publisher cites statistics from web site VG Chartz that the Colin McRae-less US version was number one on the Xbox 360 charts, a move that is sure to get the NPD a little hot and bothered.
Speaking with Joystiq, VG Chartz president Brett Walton said that the 500,000 shipment figure "is likely to be a shipment figure" (i.e. Codemasters has sold 500,000 to the retailers, not necessarily to the consumer). Walton said that the sales were 110,000 in the US (70,000 for Xbox 360 and 40,000 on the PC) and around 150,000 total in Europe.

First Dead Rising and now DiRT? It's amazing when they realize there isnt 3 months in a year and put out games aside from...you know..Fall. THEY ACTUALLY SELL! *gasp*
People don't want to buy a year's worth of games in 3 months?!?!? Say it ain't so!!

That's why publishers are going to the Xbox 360. We'll see what the PS3 does it's first week.

Imagine if they had shipped the PS3 version?
The PS3 has over a million users in the US, and most are starved for games.
I cannot comprehend why developers would delay the PS3 version of games. You'll sell more if you ship it simultaneously.
And BTW, I have a 360, but I didn't buy DiRT yet (love the demo though), I'm still busy with Forza 2.

I adore me some Forza but I can't stand this game. Not that they're the same kind of racing game or out, seems to be the comparison going.

I call BS...I'm sure if they sold 500,000 that's not sell-thru (to consumers) but rather just to stores.

Now that u've mentioned it, was Diablo sell through to stores or consumers?

Dirt is OK except the horrible way the rally cars feel like they are floating or on ice. Really annoying that they don't feel as if the wheels are on the ground. The buggies and pickup trucks feel fine but the rally cars feel terrible. Glad it's selling well I guess although with the lame online modes it doesn't make the online game better.

Sorry dude...I could care less about Motorstorm, it is not bad at all. I just like Dirt better.
Suckers? Right. This coming from somebody who obviously bought a PS3.

love the claim. 500K SHIPPED is absolutely different than 500K sold, read the fine print guys. 70K sold on xbox in US. not exactly something to brag about.
not to mention Forza is a much better game (online especially) anyway.

What I don't understand is why you seem to imply that VGChartz is right.
The NPD is questioning VGChartz's data? Doesn't the NPD have better data than VGChrarz?
Codemaster doesn't confirm VGChartz is right about the number sold, they're simply saying they're right about it being the top selling Xbox 360 title for the week.
All this time I thought VGChartz was paying for the information. It would appear not.
This further implies that VGChartz is guessing at their numbers.

This biggest utter BS on the web today!
How the FRAK did a real company rely on vgchartz.com for sales data!? Thats like sony or MS quoting that Hatcher analyst guy on sales! WORSE even.
vgchartz.com is a crappy copy of 2 OTHER sites
vgcharts.com and
vgcharts.org
The rip off "z" site has only been around, since what? January?
what ever happened to nextgenwars, did anybody ever quote them?

We are sold out at Gamecrazy, so I'd say the sales numbers are pretty close to the shipped.
And those bitching about Motorstorm and Dirt are idiots; they're completely different. It's like arguing Burnout and Gran Turismo: arcade vs. gear-head. Go find something better to argue about.

You have to got into the car set-up and tinker with the settings, because the defaults are hardly ever any good. Playing with the power bias and adding down force works for me.

Dirt is a little better than Motorstorm, according to people I've never met.

Unlinke the orignal Xbox the 360 has been good racing game deprived until just recently. It's no wonder this game has sold well. On top of that it has been dumbed down to appeal to the masses. I like the game except for the annoying announcer guy who likes to say "dude" with the cheesiest voice acting this side of Sega titles (Luckily there isn't much of it). And the feel of the cars. I agree they feel more like they are on Ice, I'm not sure how they can screw that up. Colin Mcrae games haven't had it right for quite a few years though. Rallisport Challenge 2 was excellent even though it was more arcadey.
