Rainbow Six Vegas Black Edition goes AWOL
So, the Rainbow Six Vegas Black Edition DLC really did appear on Xbox Live. It was brief, but it was there. But now, as you have already found if you've attempted a download over the past day or so, it is most certainly not there. The good Major offers little help on his blog, saying only: "This has been pulled. I'll let you know when it makes a return." Wow, cryptic.
There are, of course, plenty of delightful theories as to why the pack pulled a Judy on Family Matters. Some think that it got on to Marketplace too early, some think a critical bug was discovered. We like to think that Ubisoft was so racked with guilt over charging $10 for five maps (when that amount previously got you five maps and two new modes) that they pulled it. We admit that's not really likely. We'll be sure to update this post when it triumphantly returns.

A bit off topic, but if you ever see the Oxy Clean infomercial that airs late night; don't buy the product.
It doesn't really make stains vanish. I found that out the hard way.
Drdre74 @ Jun 28th 2007 10:11AM
I'm hoping that it's going to be free when they repost it. Why do 360 fans have to pay for it when the PS3 version gets it for free when they buy the game. If I knew that i would have gotten the ps3 version. Microsoft is ripping us off.
Stef Geiger @ Jun 28th 2007 10:09AM
Not trying to piss of the 360 fanboys, but I believe the PS3 edition comes with all those maps and modes - and we only had to wait 8 months longer than you and pay $200 more for our console. *cough*
Johnny @ Jun 28th 2007 10:18AM
Well from personal experience, I'd say there was a major bug in it.
In fact, it was alright when I downloaded it, but when I turned the console on the next day, none of my friends showed up, it kept disconnecting from Live, it wouldn't show anything on Marketplace, and wouldn't let me play live games.
Then I deleted it, and viola, it now works perfectly again.

@3 That's a horrible deal Stef

@4...You know the ps3 one JUST came out like yesterday, right? You didn't have a choice on which one you bought unless you bought your 360 version yesterday.
deaftly @ Jun 28th 2007 10:33AM
family matters reference FTW
MrPaulJames @ Jun 28th 2007 11:25AM
@6..
The PS3 came out in America around 8 months ago.
17 November in North America
:/
Yesterday is now 8 months ago? :S
CrashJak II @ Jun 28th 2007 10:43AM
PS3 owners get them free cause we waited 8 months for it to drop. You guys already had it.
Victus @ Jun 28th 2007 10:46AM
$200 more for a console and an 8 month wait does suck; though not as bad as $400 + $140 then the eventual realization that you need a warranty $60 b/c the 360 just can't seem to work for prolonged periods of time.
BTW, R6 Vegas on the PS3 is very fun. Thanks UbiSoft for a solid port.
Victus @ Jun 28th 2007 10:48AM
EDIT: By saying "$400 + $140" I was addressing MS's return price on console repairs for those who may not know.

I was going strictly by this:

"Worldwide playstation 3 releases"
tcc3 @ Jun 28th 2007 11:07AM
You know by complaining about all fee based content you just dilute the argument when its truly a price gouge.
When they release content that is outlandishly overpriced -like Horse Armor and GH songpacks - and we complain they just write it off as "They complain about all fee based content."
Pick your battles gentlemen. $10 for 5 maps isnt the deal of the century, but they aren't picking your pocket either.
poster @ Jun 28th 2007 11:28AM
What are you talking about MrPaulJames? I'm talking about the game rainbow 6, i said "the ps3 ONE came out", not "the ps3 came out"
cc123 @ Jun 28th 2007 11:30AM
"Thanks UbiSoft for a solid port."
Not sure why you think this is solid. I put off buying this for the 360 cause I assumed the PS3 version that came later would be better and from reading the reviews the graphics are a bit below the 360's. Also IGN dropped the sound score a whole point on the PS3 version. Maybe IGN are just nitpicking but how the hell does the sound quality drop?!?
The extra content is really nice since PS3 doesn't have to pay for it but the minuses made me decide to pass on it.
A0 @ Jun 28th 2007 11:35AM
I don't see all the complaints about new maps. If anyone really plays R6 in here. You'd know only about 3 or 4 maps are played all the time in multi-player...
Jake @ Jun 28th 2007 11:36AM
360 owners are not getting ripped off. The original game was worth $60 and the DLC is a pretty good value as far as DLC goes. If you only have one system, R6V is a great purchase either way, and an absolute godsend for game deprived PS3 owners.
If you owned both systems 8 months ago, you can argue over what the best action would be. You could buy R6V on 360 and all DLC for $80 total. The advantage there is you get 8 months of additional R6V gaming. Or, you can wait 8 months while other enjoy the hell out of the game and get it for $60 on PS3 or used for $40 on 360 + $20 for DLC.
Either way, 360 owners really aren't getting screwed over. It is just a nice way for Ubisoft to make up for making PS3 owners wait 8 months for a game that could have easily been ready in time for the PS3 launch window.
Jake @ Jun 28th 2007 11:41AM
R6V supposedly has worse graphics on the PS3 version as well. I hear they are very close, but this doesn't bode well. They are both Unreal3 engine games, and R6V really isn't that insanely difficult to pull off technically.
Is it possible that the PS3, after all its impossible uber-graphics hype, can not keep up with the 360 technically, despite coming out a year later? The true test will be Unreal III this fall. Epic has claimed Unreal III will beat Gears in graphics. If that is true, it will be interesting to see if the PS3 version keeps up. Some feel that Gears is already beyond the PS3's capabilities visually...
(half flamebait, half honest debate)

@#1 Robert;
If Oxy Clean doesn't make the stains go away, what does it do with them?

I guess PS3 owners are finding out that extra $200 isn't for added processing power. It's for that Blu-Ray drive...
Victus @ Jun 28th 2007 12:05PM
@ 15
It is a solid port. I never said it was groundbreaking or superior (ala Oblivion) to the 360 version. It is, especially by comparison to other less than solid ports (SP:DA, FEAR etc), a very good title.
The single player game looks terrific on the PS3, so any fears of Unreal Engine 3 not working well on the PS3 should be exstinguished.
From what I've gathered, there is a drop in graphic quality on the 360 online version as well. I will rent it and test it this week to see.
Travis @ Jun 28th 2007 12:25PM
@Jake:
I believe the 360 does for sure have a more powerful graphics chip. What Sony claims is that the graphics for PS3 games need to be done partly with the cell processor's SPUs and partly with the graphics chip.
Whether that is true or not, I have no clue. So far I haven't really seen anything on my PS3 to show me it's a more powerful machine, although Motorstorm does seem to put a lot more on the screen than I've seen in any 360 game.
Regardless to whether PS3 games ever do overtake 360 games graphically, I do enjoy my PS3. I'm sure I would have enjoyed a 360 too. But I like watching high def movies and I would have bought an HD DVD drive if I had gone the 360 route, so I wouldn't have saved money going with the 360. I realize a lot of people could care less about high def movies, so the 360 is probably the better choice for them.
Jim @ Jun 28th 2007 3:41PM
So anyway, what's happened to the Black Edition DLC then?
Digi Smalls @ Jun 28th 2007 5:11PM
Travis, good post. nice and objective.
cc123, i hope the disappointment with the PS3 port doesn't stop you from playing Rainbow at all. it's a fantastic game, and that's just the singleplayer.
get a used 360 version and see it at its best. if you decide to get the maps later, it should still be around the same price as a new PS3 version.
on topic: if the maps are glitched this late in, wouldn't they also be glitched in the PS3 version?
.
Spitkicker @ Jun 28th 2007 5:30PM
Well I was lucky enough (or unlucky enough depending on how you look at it) to download it. Seems to work fine for me, just a bit off a long load time on the maps. If they do make it free I want my points back. Great maps though.
mawhiuk @ Jun 29th 2007 2:08PM
Well i was one of the UNLUCKY ones to download Black Edition Maps. After it downloaded i ran Vegas so i could play the new maps. What i discovered that ALL the maps from the Black Edition and ALL ALL the maps from the Red Edition were not listed as availble maps to play. I quit to dashboard by pressing the xbox button and then Y. Reloaded Vegas and still had same thing. So i turned off my xbox thinking a reboot would help. What i got was THREE RED RINGS!!! WTF tried again and again and then gave up after 10 mins. Tried again 1 hr later and my xbox booted and loaded Vegas with ALL maps. The maps are BRILLIANT. However when i took cover behind things and then leaned over i was getting graphic glitches in the form of multi coloured sparkles. All was Fine. Next day 3 Red rings again. Then it worked.. Today Three red rings and so far i can't boot my xbox. I bought it March 2006 and have not had ANY issues until this happened. I am sure they are related. Any others with Similar experience?
K2 @ Jul 1st 2007 3:04PM
Well, guess what. It's back. And it's free.
But no worries, they're refunding it for all y'all who payed for it.
The red pack is going to be free as well on July 6th, but no refunds for the poor fools like me who already payed 10 bucks for it. I wish they'd just figure out whether its gonna be free or not before they release it.
