Take-Two and Thompson truce torched already?
Take-Two is telling Jack Thompson to cool down his escalating GTA IV and Manhunt 2 maneuvers or else he may be in violation of the agreement that kept him from getting disbarred, along with a slew of other potential problems, a few months ago. GamePolitics reports that Thompson received a letter from Take-Two that he may be in breach of their earlier settlement. Ever tell a kid numerous times to not touch a hot stove and they still do it anyway? Yeah, that's what this is like. The violation revolves around Thompson sending a letter to the Governor and Attorney General of Florida "alerting" them to an "incredibly violent video game called Manhunt 2." Thompson says he agreed to stop filling suits invoking Florida's public nuisance law and contacting companies that Take-Two does business with; however, Thompson says in court filings, "Thompson DID NOT... agree not to contact government officials... no settlement agreement... that prohibits a citizen from contacting any government at any level about anything is enforceable because such a restriction on the First Amendment rights of citizens is contrary to public policy." Thompson also writes in the court documents that he's filed a complaint against Take-Two's attorneys with the Florida Bar over the June 7th letter telling him that he's in violation of the agreement. Well, maybe this helps explain a little bit what the secret meeting between Thompson and Take-Two's CEO was about.

so now he's gonna get politicians to be retarded for him?

Jack Thompson, when you signed that contract, you sold yourself out and lost. Let someone more competent crusade against video games, because you are nothing but a sore loser.
Mr Khan @ Jun 28th 2007 5:57PM
heh
He can always latch on to someone else
perhaps to 2K Games for BioShock, or to MMV for No More Heroes, or perhaps just hit on Bandai Namco for Jiggly Ivy...

How Darkness didn't get an AO our the wrathe of Thompson I'll never understand. Manhunt 2 most be some insane shit, because The Darkness is brutal.
I'll also never understand why Take Two didnt just allow him to get disbarred....
Bertrand @ Jun 28th 2007 6:10PM
Oh, so he knows about the first amendment? Good.
Sloar @ Jun 28th 2007 6:14PM
Actually, Jack was pretty smart on that one. There's nothing Take-Two can do about him writing to his governor. As long as he's writing to his elected representatives, Take-Two's lawyers don't have a case. Now, if he started writing these letters to elected officials that are outside of his electoral district, he could potentially be in trouble. Well played Jack, well played.

Jack's interpretation of the 1st Ammendment is worse than the Bush Administration's.

Well fortuanately(and I say this begrudgenly here) no settlement can ever and I mean ever prevent a person from expressing their point of view to an elected official. period. This is a good thing.
However slanderizing and a personal vandetta meant to harm or smear is different and not protected. Thompson walks this line with Take Two. he may be able to contact legal officials but he possibly may not be able to encourage them to take legal action or he violates his settlement.
It isn't exactly illegal to break an illegal settlement but that does not mean there are not consequences to doing so regardless of whether you are following your unremovable constitutional rights.

Does anyone else feel like Jack Thompson is doing this for the same reason Rockstar makes their games. It's all for the controversy, if there wasn't any controversy in video-games Mr. Jack would probably just be some washed up politician fighting against the next controversy. He just wants the attention it gives him.
Aberu @ Jun 28th 2007 8:20PM
Could it be? Could I be agreeing with Thompson? Could the lude disregard for our rights as citizens shown here by some of the commenters display that people are more shallow than previously thought on this issue?

Every time this douche gets mentioned somewhere I smile, it amuses me that this guy is living proof that he himself is wrong...
where are all these game-addicted soulless killing machines when he's walking down the street or taking out the trash? Oh that's right, there aren't any...

Gotta side with JT on this one...man...up is down...white is black...everything seems so strange now.
MetroidStar890 @ Jun 29th 2007 7:57AM
Wow, Jack Thomspon using the First Amendment in a legal defense. That's a larf. It reeally is.
Grant @ Jun 29th 2007 9:19AM
Just burn him alive.
seriously.
He's a disgrace to the practice of law.
It's one thing to use a loophole to save yourself from trouble, it's another to use it to continue being a whiney bitch.... even after you've been to court for the matter.

I think the solution here is obvious. Just break Florida off and flush it into the Atlantic like the turd that it is.
