i totally agree with this....
i mean the whole reason tht nintendo went with the wii's revolutionary setup was to broaden the horizen when it comes to gamers, but if ppl only see ppl playing wii sports on the console then nobody will realize tht theres more to it than tht and only think of sports when they think of the console and won't see the other possibilities tht it has in store

agreed with #1...it actually make it look/seem as though this is all it can do while we all know that in the coming months, there will be 3 golden bits that will for the trifo-...3 awesome games that will be the base constructor of the system, then once the large base is established, let the games roll in....anyone else kinda scared that the 3 most anticipated Wii games are all coming this year?! I mean, What will we get later...I think that an original Zelda Wii is in the works...

The Wii wouldn't be where it is without Wii Sports, everyone who plays that game wants a Wii. You can't say the same about any other Wii game. I'm not just talking about gamers either i'm talking about everybody.

I'm not bothered by it. We all knew that Nintendo would be doing a genious thing if they packed Wii Sports with the console. They did, and it has tremendously helped push sales and hype. Think about it - if the Wii wasn't packed with Wii Sports, what would these reporters write about? "New Nintendo Console has Motion Control" - okay that's not grabbing mainstream attention. "Wii, Nintendo's New Video Game Console, Causes Injuries, Breaks TVs" - that's not good for sales if they don't have a positive spin at the end. Now, "Wii Sports Brings Fun to the Whole Family" - that's mainstream gold.
Nintendo's hooked everyone with Wii Sports. Those who are interested in or buy the console start learning about its other features. Wii Sports has been the feature article of CNN Tech more than once. You aren't going to see that with Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, or even Super Smash Bros Brawl, no matter how good those games are.
If it wasn't for Wii Sports, I don't think the Wii would be still creating lines wherever it goes. It would still be a hit, but not the 'smash' it currently is. I think we own a great deal of thanks to Wii Sports for the attention, and thus developers, it has brought our console.

My buddy who I hadn't seen in months came over yesterday and while impressed I had a Wii, he said he didn't feel like excercising while playing video games, referring to Wii Sports. So I showed him Second Opinion.
That aside, if Wii can get in on the sports gamer market, the chance for success long term increases. How many copies of Madden get sold on the Xbox and Playstation consoles every year and provide a reliable base of customers for those consoles? Every golfer I know went out and got Tiger Woods for the Wii. Most were disappointed, but it just shows, the idea of using the wiimote for sports gaming is a huge draw.
I agree though, more non-Wii Sports advertising would be good.

As soon as Wii Health Pack comes out or Wii Sports 2 the media will cover those games.

It would help if there were any games other than Wii sports that were actually worth playing.

I've been thinking this since about a week after it came out. I mean, Wii Sports is great and all, but that's what people associate with the Wii right away. I sometimes stop and think how many people (non-gamers) must be buying it just because they saw Wii Sports and will never play another game on it. I think it also makes everybody think that every game on the Wii demands so much exaggerated movement when that is simply not true. Either way, I hope Nintendo has a plan for the future once everybody that wants it just for Wii Sports has one.

For now, certainly
I mean, how many people associated the NES solely with Super Mario Bros?
The game is completely revolutionary in that its sparking a push for $250 purchases across a completely broad scale. It pushes consoles more than any other game since Super Mario Bros (and possibly Sonic the Hedgehog)
But its not like the people who buy it won't know that there are other games for it, i mean at the least there will be advertisements on the back of the box (there always has been), and Nintendo does give some good advertising where its needed (I've seen ads for Super Paper Mario, Pokemon Battle Revolution, and Mario Party 8)

A couple of weeks ago, I brought my Wii to a sleepover with Wii Sports and 5 other games. I showed them Wii Sports first so they can kinda get the feeling for it.
That was the biggest mistake I ever made.
After the sleepover, I decided to look at my playing history. I notice that my friends have been playing 15 hours of Wii Sports! (mostly bowling). I talk to them the next day and they tell me that the Wii didn't even turn off that day, and that they were playing all night, and they had to replace the batteries while everyone else was asleep.
Not that Wii Sports is bad, but after 15 hours straight................

I'm usually one to decry overuse of sequels, but in the case of Wii Sports, I think Nintendo should be pushing a sequel out the door every 6 months to keep the casual audience interested.
Or better yet, release a new downloadable sport or two every few months via the new Wiiware channel.
I know what you're saying about Wii Sports being the face of Wii for people who don't follow games like we do, but I think we could all benefit by Nintendo milking the Wii Sports idea for all its worth. God knows it's the only way I'll ever get to try cricket.

I agree with post 10 - NES had Mario, Sega had Sonic, TG-16 had Bonk ...
In effect, Wii Sports is the Wii's "mascot". There's nothing wrong with using it primarily in advertisements. One of the major selling points of the Wii is that you can buy one and NOT have to worry about buying other games.

Wii Sports is a great game. I've never seen a commercial of someone actually playing the console before, and it's a great campaign because it shows many features of the wii, the motion sensor, how easy it is, and the Mii's. RE4 is one of the best game I've ever played, but I wouldn't want to watch a commercial of a guy sitting on the couch playing it, and with other "party" games, like Mario Party 8 and Warrioware, and Rayman Raving Rabbids, these are all cool games, but they aren't instantly recognizable with the Wii like Wii Sports is. Wii Sports is kind of like the mascot for the Wii.

People aren't buying a Wii, they are buying Wii sports with cool hardware that supports it. I consider myself a gamer (PS1, DC, Xbox, 360, PSP, DS), but I don't see much anything else that interests me other than virtual console (XBLA still better) and Wii sports. Yeah, Excite Truck was fun for a while and I've loaned WarioWare to a friend but don't really care if ever get it back. Oh, and I was over the whole Resident Evil thing about 5 yrs ago.
If Wii is to really last, and by last I mean by the time developers figure out how to really program for the PS3 cell processor... ok, not really THAT long... :). ANYWAY Nintendo does need more Wii Sports-like games! It’s got to mimic the real world (where most other people live - smucks) and recreate that experience.
THAT is why people, that would never buy a game system, are buying the Wii. It’s also why the media, that almost never writes about video games (unless it was somehow linked to someone’s death), continues to write about Wii Sports in EVERY article.
I’m not saying it’s right, but it is, what it is… and hopefully Nintedo is paying attention and recognizes there are going to be a lot of Wii owners waiting for Wii Sports 2, Wii Bar Sports, Board Games, Wii drinking games (Nintendo Licensed, yeah right lol), Wii foosball, Brunswick Bowling, a DECENT golf game… etc. Because at my next party, I am NOT pulling out WarioWare or MarioParty 8 and getting anyone over 21 to play them.

I find the advantage of Wii Sports is that it definitely has a longer shelf life than any game released on the system so far. Zelda was great... but takes a bit to get in to, and once you've finished it... well, it is now collecting dust.
Super Paper Mario would be a bit better if there wasn't so much text to read when starting a new game. I brought it over, and a five year old was crying to try and play, but had to sit thru twenty minutes of text.
I'd prefer a more in depth version of Tennis (5 set matches for example), a full 18 of the golf (A lot more approachable than Tiger Woods), and a more complete baseball game, and honestly, the boxing really needs polish... but there is far greater replay value bar none over any other game I've played so far.

Wii Sports 2? Release a new one every 6 months? I think they'd run out of sports.
Full fledged individual games from Wii Sports, now that's a great idea. Wii Sports: Golf would rival Tigers Woods, simply because the one to one swing is so much more fun. Wii Sports Bowling wouldn't need any changes, just create a league/amateur/pro setup. Same with boxing, but it could use some fine tuning. Baseball and Tennis are the farthest from a full fledged version of the games, but the potential is definitely there. I think we could all see using the nunchuck for additional movement control.
This is what's great about Wii Sports though. I'm excited thinking about the mere possibility of expanding on it.

I totally agree. Wii Sports has kind of become like a double-edged sword for Nintendo.
On the one hand it's the mother of killer apps. Responsible for goodness knows how many Wii sales and mainstream attention.
But on the other hand, the Wii has now been branded with Wii Sports and people cannot see past it. When they think of the Wii all they see is Wii Sports and though I like the game this annoys me so much because the Wii has so much more to offer. Wii Sports is great, but at the end of the day it is a gimmicky party game for casual gamers and when I see these ads of people jumping around, flailing their arms about, I worry about all the hardcore gamers who will be totally turned off (if not spitting blood!)
Nintendo really needs to show people that the Wii is for hardcore gaming as well and for every Wii Sports there is a Twilight Princess, Metroid Prime 3, etc. It's all very well appealing to "new gamers" but it won't be much use if it's offset by losing all the existing gamers.

I don't think there's any other good game out for the Wii. I certainly haven't played one yet. I liked Zelda, but it was a GameCube game. I liked Super Paper Mario, but it wasn't anything near what I was hoping it'd be- certainly not as good as Thousand Year Door.
Until they make a Zelda specifically for the Wii or Galaxy comes out, Wii Sports is all the Wii has. Be thankful it's as good as it is, or people might actually be buying PS3s.

"Nintendo really needs to show people that the Wii is for hardcore gaming as well"
The hardcore gamers know the Wii is for them because it's got a little sign that says "Nintendo" on the box. Nintendo is the only console maker that works exclusively with video games, and there's no question in the minds of the hardcore gamers who trust Nintendo with their firstborn sons.. It's the casual gamers that need to be won over, and if they see the Wii as a $250 party box, well that's a helluva deal. Then they'll do what I did and sell their PS2 because they see that they only need the Wii.

Dont bite the hand that feeds. There's not another single game that would have as broad of an appeal as Wii Sports. Grandmas dont want to play Paper Mario. Girlfriends dont care about Zelda. Five year olds dont care about Resident Evil. The middle aged generation isn't interested in Warioware.
Wii Sports is easily accessable, requires no instructions, and makes use of the "mii" feature to personalize the game and make it cutesy and fun.
