UK gaming magazine Edge recently conducted a poll searching for the 100 best videogames of all time.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time came out as top dog, while
A Link to the Past settled into sixth along with two Mario games cozy and warm in the top ten.
OoT is one of five games to receive a flawless 10/10 score from
Edge. It was also the
first to achieve a perfect score from Japanese magazine
Famitsu. The entire list will be published in a special issue of
Edge magazine in the near future.
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
- Resident Evil 4
- Super Mario 64
- Half Life 2
- Super Mario World
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Halo: Combat Evolved
- Final Fantasy XII
- Tetris
- Super Metroid

Also, OoT is, in fact, the best game ever. I didn't know FF12 was that popular, though.

FF12 is on there, so that makes this list complete bullshit.
Triforceowner @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:03PM
@syco
Yeah, I think that twelve needs to turn into a seven by moving the lines a little further apart on the "X".
kingofwale @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:05PM
oh man, BM just ruined it for us all. :(
we should have one here. as a Write-in. (and for fanboys too stupid to remember the names of the game... we should only count those with correct spells). ;)
Staggs @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:08PM
Oh gawd, the steaming heap of boredom known as FFXII made the list. I'm gonna stop paying attention to it now.
Imadogg99 @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:09PM
Ocarina of Time is indeed flawless in many ways... I even took my N64 to Bangladesh last summer to play OoT...
I thought Super Mario World and Link to the Past were the best SNES games ever.
Halo at 7? Nice.
Heard so much about RE4 forever since it came out, damn I gotta play it
eelb @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:14PM
6/10 of those games = nintendo
Cheez-It @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:13PM
Crafty Nintendo, Recycling those franchises to...
Make some of the best games ever?
Poor trolls.
DarkTetsuya @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:26PM
FFVII not #1? are you sure this list is real? (Unless I'm just thinking of GameFAQs)
Neebs @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:43PM
It has Half-Life 2 on there.
Thank god, I would be the fight if it wasn't...
ZapDash @ Jul 2nd 2007 9:53PM
This, my friends, is why Nintendo fans are so insane. We know they've made good games and we trust they will continue to do so.
AJ @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:04PM
There have been six games to get a 40/40 from famitsu...OoT, Soul Calibur, Vagrant Story (?), The Wind Waker, Nintendogs, and Final Fantasy XII
BPM @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:04PM
Meh.
OoT was good, but not my favorite of the series. I liked Majora's Mask, A Link to the Past, and even the oft-forgotten Link's Awakening much more.
I would've liked Wind Waker more than Ocarina of Time, if it had a few more dungeons, like they originally planned.
Maybe if Aunoma's wishes of a TWW port to Wii come true, they could make it a "TWW uncut," with all of the content which was originally left out.
Monkeydog @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:05PM
Jeez, European gamers actually have a good sense in games. Except FFXII is quite odd, probably because it's in people's recent memory. FFIX and FFVI were much better, but, oh well.
Shame the Europeans never got Chrono Trigger. :(
Jonathan Tran @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:04PM
haha and soon they will all be playable on Wii!!!
almost

I agree with OoT. I started playing it for a second time the other day from the VC, and it's as awesome as I remember. Better than Twilight Princess for sure.
Good to see gamestats.com being validated, as we've known OoT was the best for a while now.
Ninegauger @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:12PM
Europeans never got Chrono Trigger? That's a tragedy if e'er I heard one.
Mr Khan @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:15PM
Wierd, this is close to what I would consider the 10 best ever
1. LoZ: Ocarina of Time
2. Final Fantasy Vii
3. super Mario Bros 3
4. Halo
5. GTA: San Andreas
6. Super Metroid
7. Doom
8. Tetris
9. Sonic 3
10. Super Mario 64
jay @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:15PM
Theres a bit of a theory that they actually meant VII, not XII. A possible typo.
Yup. Loaded with Nintendo games, sounds like a geniune "best game" list to me! Theres a reason that after spending ungodly amounts on my 360 with a library of games that I still play my Wii more.
jbarad @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:16PM
I know everyone else has said it, but FFXII felt more like a job than a game... mixed with some bad medieval soap opera.
DWells55 @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:16PM
I'm appalled by the lack of Goldeneye or Perfect Dark (for N64, none of that horrendous PD0 crap).
deaftly @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:21PM
just a bad list in general
NintendoFanbot @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:21PM
FFXII and more specifically the Gambit and Job systems to me feels like a Japanese action figure you can buy from grocery store shelves, the ones that you pop from the molded plastic frames and snap together yourself. I used to like those toys but I had to move away from Japan. :(
syco @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:23PM
You can consider Halo as simply being Goldeneye/PD, but by a different developer and on a different platform. Gameplay-wise they're virtually identical.
quazi @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:26PM
i can totally see a good argument for oot being number one but the rest of that list is TERRIBLE.
BNinjaC @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:44PM
I think that it's a good list. Mine would be different but thats opinions! The only game that jumps out at me as a poor choice is Halo. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed both halo games and I'm looking forward to the third one but it ain't a top 10 all time game. It's lacking in alot of ways... the library level anyone? Wouldn't one of the doom or quake games fit better?
Anyway, just opinions.
justin @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:48PM
all great games, but there is a definite Nintendo bias here.
GJM @ Jul 2nd 2007 10:52PM
RE4 was a fantastic game but should not be on this list. Half Life 2 should be nowhere near this list. HL2 has got to be the most overrated game ever (not that it was bad per se)
Xeres @ Jul 2nd 2007 11:27PM
Half-Life 2 the most overrated game ever? PLEASE! The most overrated game of all time by far is Halo 2. Heck, even the first Halo is immensely overrated. Excuse me but going around shooting aliens? Been done 10 years before Halo (Doom). Dual Wielding, done 7 years before Halo 2 (GoldenEye). Online multiplayer? Done before countless times. What have the Halo games done that no other game hasn't? That's right NOTHING. Halo should be nowhere near this list. It does not deserve all the praise it gets. The Halo games are hugely overrated and overhyped. Halo should be replaced by GoldenEye. No that is a revolutionary game that changed the way we look at First Person Shooters.
Purple Haze @ Jul 2nd 2007 11:44PM
All of those games are awesome except Final Fantasy XII sucks compared
to pretty much any other one except X-2 or XI (all those games came
out after Enix joined Square and Hironobu and Nobuo left), and Halo
is overrated.
ipod fanboy @ Jul 2nd 2007 11:47PM
Im pretty glad taht resident evil 4 made the top list. That was my favorite game of last generation and that gamecube version had superior graphics and still some of the best graphics to date is re4 for the gamecube, some of those visuals are just as good or even better then those taht appear on xbox360 or ps3, no offense guys. RE4 really took over da shoulder 3rd person perspective to new hieghts and reinvented 3rd person gaming. I'm sure gears of war got some of its inspiration from capcoms RE4. I dont think halo should have made the list, an alternative to halo should have been goldenye for the n64, taht game revolutionized fps on a gaming console. I would have loved super mario bros 3 to make the list instead of super mario world. Mario world is just an expansion of mario 3. And finally final fantasy XII is supposed to be final fantasy VII. I'm sure lots of final fantasy gamers will be heart broken to find out that final fantasy VII did no make the list instead final fantasy XII did. I wish they made re4 for xbox360.
Grey Acumen @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:18AM
Wow... Considering that about half of the games on that list I've found to be very good. If RE4 managed to get in the top 10 and that was for Gamecube, then I'm definitely going to have to grab it for the Wii. I have yet to hear anything bad about the game, and now that it's on the Wii, my issues with dual sticks for FPS are gone.
polly @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:22AM
I don't know about the games, but those are definitely the best first 3 posts I've ever seen on Joystiq.

Well, Resident Evil 4 is not an FPS, and it does not use dual sticks. But yes, you should definitely play it.
As for the list, I too would take it much more seriously if number 8 read 'Final Fantasy VII'. Also, I'd love to see Diablo on there. But I'm a hopeless fanboy :(.
t_m @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:44AM
EDGE (the uk edition) is the ONLY games magzine (print) worth reading. Plus it's always very pretty too! *hearts*
socrates @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:47AM
People who don't think FFXII is worthy just don't know what they are talking about. It was such an incredible leap forward in RPG mechanics and gameflow...huge evolutionary leap in how all RPGs will be played from here on out. It doesn't have nostalgia value, but people overvalue that anyways.
I personally found OoT and SMB64 to be entirely lacking in the fun department, but there must be something to those games since everyone loves them. Just not me (and I adore Link's Awakening and SMW).
My biggest problem was Chronotrigger being so damn low...20 spots behind Secret of Mana! That's absurd, CT is an obviously better game, and easily in my top 3 ever.
overall the list is pretty good though. Civ4 at #20 - just about right!
smitty @ Jul 8th 2007 3:15PM
Who are all the idiots who voted for that trash of a game ff12?! Dear God, that game should be denied from ever existing, along with its prior SE abomination X-2. Screw it, all FF games past IX sucked. Quit while you're ahead and just keep remaking your DECENT games. Can we have the Chrono games now by the way?
Roland @ Jul 3rd 2007 1:50AM
How can you leave of Super Mario Bros 3 for NES and Snatcher for Sega CD???
2kings @ Jul 3rd 2007 4:59AM
'Best Videogame's for non gamers
mirite?
mokeyjoe @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:14AM
Great list. Nothing will ever knock OOT off the top though.
FFXII deserves to be right where it is IMO. I never liked RPGs much (even VII) but FFXII blew me away.
I can understand why JRPG fans might not like it, but the traditional JRPG was the stalest genre of all and FFXII needed to happen.
Also good to see RE4 right up there. It would probably be top of my own list though.
Cinder @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:33AM
It's quite a nice take on a top 100, showing games that are actually playable by todays standards.
Games like Quake, Space Invaders and Pong DO deserve their classic status, but are barely playable today when stacked up against games from the last couple of generations.
I would've liked to see Metroid Prime break the top 10 instead of Halo, but it seems the games are pretty good choices no matter which way you slice it.
rDr4g0n @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:00AM
its a sad day when younguns leave mario 3 out of the top 10... the original gamer generation is be suceeded by the new one, and well... they all like halo.
Jake @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:19AM
This was selected via a poll. Is there any surprise that over half the games are Nintendo and Halo. Damn fanboys. ;)
FFXII is on there and FFVII is not. Other than FFXII and Tetris, I actually really like all the games up there, but still.
