The360 had/has reliabilty issues. They most likely have straightened most of the issues out (remember this costs them more money than anyone). But seriously. The bulk of this story is based on a sample set of 35 launch units? It is Joystiq's job to filter out non news.

I had lost interest in video games until I got my Wii. Playing Wii reawakened my interest in video games and I started thinking about getting one of the other "next-gen" video game systems.

The X-Box 360 is pretty expensive for me, but I could justify buying it if it weren't for the offensive failure rate.

The PS3 would be awesome, but let's face it, the PS3 is this generation's Neo-Geo. It is great for rich people but will never be a mainstream gaming system.

I'm just going to stick with my Wii until the 360 fixes their inadequate hardware or the PS3 comes down $300 dollars.

I'm not holding my breath.

I sent my xbox to the european repair center 6 weeks ago and when calling to check up on it today an automated message basically told me that the expected repair duration had increased from 15 working days to 25 and that if your xbox had been away for less than that don't bother calling. They explained later that it was because they had moved/switched repair centers but it makes you wonder.. Sux not only because I have missed out on 6 of the best XBLM weeks ever, but also because I have payed 6 weeks of XBLM and XNA subscription for nothing. I love xbox and microsoft but this treatment is not acceptible on any standard!

Microsoft has had to extend the fix time in england due to repairs - helps if you ask what they are offering customers to compensate.

The person on their 37th console should stop frying them in chip oil, it never helps.

Microsoft refuses to tell us how many 360s break. Meanwhile, Nintendo mails out millions of free thicker wrist straps after a couple hyper wackjobs complain. Nintendo handled that in under 2 months.

Another reason NEVER to buy into Microsoft's BS. They'll keep selling crap, with no consumer agency stepping in to protect consumers. Maybe this is why the 360 is made outside of the U.S., protecting U.S. companies from any backlash or quality control screwing American workers and consumers in one shot. This is why Gates & Co. are soooo rich. Welcome to the real world fellow gamers. Choose your sides accordingly.

Is it possible for the gamer community to find out the failure rates for themselves? I'm not sure, but we can try. http://www.theconsoletracker.com . Built for this purpose.

Whilst MS keeps denying they have a problem that is greater than 5%, the evidence really is starting to mount against them that they are lying. For one they won't actually produce any evidence that the return rate is less than 5%. (But that is typical of MS anyway, they claim that Linux infringes their patents, but refuse to say which ones.)

And when authorised repair companies refuse to repair any more XBOX360's you know there is something afoot.

Yeah, i can't see how this could be possible. 1 in 3 bricking? And those circles under the game discs are from tilting the 360, scratching the discs.

"Did all of you fail math?"

Just you.

"If the failure rate was %33, rather than the %3 they claim, there would be over a thousand people on their 10th console, and hundreds on their 12th."

No. Entirely incorrect.

"At %33 there would be over 3 million people on at least their second console. "

So it's you and microsoft's spokespeople VS ...well, 3 million of us 2nd xboxers. Don't get lonely.

Mine died last week. It just won't switch on and there is a game disk in there I'll have to send back as well. Lucky in the UK electrical goods are covered by a 1 year warranty, but I'm still annoyed.

Chilly:

You're faulting the Xbox for a power cable? A cable that the company replaced for free? Then you go on to name Nintendo the most reliable console maker? Let's see here...

I've never had to blow on an Xbox disc or in the tray to enable the system to play a game like I did with the NES/SNES/N64.

Didn't the Nintendo have a factory recall on wiimote straps?

Fact is every console manufacturer has had some issues. The Xbox was a solid peice of hardware.

Microsoft did not 'recall' the power cord of the Xbob 1; there was nothing wrong with the power cord. The defect was inside the Xbox. Instead of fixing the defect, they mailed you a power cord that had a fuse in it, so that when the Xbox 1 started shorting out, it would blow the fuse instead of burning down your house and killing you, like it did to that poor kid in December 2004. I can't wait for the first lawsuit against Microsoft in a couple years when someone loses the 'fuse' cord, and uses a regular cord again, and dies. They will win the lawsuit, because Microsoft only 'recalled' the power cord; they never told anybody that the Xbox was still deadly with ANY power cord that doesn't have a fuse.

Furthermore, Xbob 1 was not designed by Microsoft. It was designed by Nvidia, and that is why it was more reliable. Xbob 360 was designed by MS in order to maximize cheapness, and you can see the results.

By any measure, Nintendo has a track record of being the most reliable hardware maker. That's what happens when you make stuff that is kid-proof and parent friendly.

Ahem. The cart blowing was due to dust and grime. Guess what a simple solution cleaned the gold contacts.

The straps guess what most people never had an issue and a lot of the ones who said they did turns out they were just faking it in order to exploit money from Nintendo to replace a broken tv do to not wearing the wrist strap.

My system just died the other day after 13 months (yeah that was annoying) feel pretty annoyed about having to fork over £80 for something that's definately not my fault and not something i can afford right now. I love the console, i can honestly say i've not enjoyed games as much in years as on the 360 but i just feel disappointed that microsoft that i would happily stand by as a company that i like has handled this in such a way.

It seems like If you don't have a problem by now, you won't any time soon. If you have a problem, you get it over and over again. I mean, 11 360's? I haven't even gone through one.

Either people are lying to falsify the failure rate, or The failures are based on manufacturer. I mean, it makes sense to me that one manufacturer is generally all sending their systems to one area continuously.
I have know 6 or 7 people in my area, 3 of them Launch consoles, and they're fine. But if you go ask someone who's had a failing console, ask about their friends, you might see a pattern.

Just a thought.

The 360 is the only system I highly recommend getting the Best Buy insurance deal for.

If the system craps out on you pretty early, you can just return it, and it's not that big a deal if you lose out on some of your save games and whatnot.

But, if you've had the system for a while and it RedRings ya, then all you have to do is buy a new one, swap the harddrives, and return both of them.

It's much better than dealing with MS's "tech support" for hours and having to lose your console for weeks on end while MS repairs/replaces it, only to have to repeat the process over again when you get a shitty refurbed console.

Best Buy just hands you a shiney, new one.

Okay let me clarify, because that sounded retarded.

If your console gets ringed, then just buy a new one and swap the harddrives to keep your saves. Then return the ringed 360 for a new one. Put your old harddrive in the new one, and finally just return the one that you bought within 30 days and get your money back.

That's what my brother did when ours crapped out on us a few months ago to the Monster Madness demo (it was after the update too).

It was either that or let MS repair it for $140 because it was just out of warrenty... yeah, don't think so.

I am planning on getting the new Elite 360 as soon as it gets back in stock but after reading these posts I am a little worried. I cant beleive some people are saying they are on their 37th system. And if you already had all of those probelms with a 36-0 why would anyone buy the elite. I guess I just dont beleive some of the people here. But then again why would you lie ??? I just know I would have given up by now if I had half the probnlems some of you have had. If it is 33% wouldnt the better business burarue or some other orginazation have made them pull it from the selfs. I admit I only know a few people with the 360 but they all love it. I loved the orignal xbox and even after reading all of this will still get the new 360 elite. You will only hear back from me if there are any problems.
