"Are console exclusives as important as they once were?"

They certainly are, because Microsoft is aqcuiring more exclusives faster than Sony can produce a good game.

Rising costs to maintain exclusive deals, plus the complicated nature of the PS3's hardware has made Sony focus on the development of first-party games. Once Sony itself gets past the learning curve of the PS3 and really show improvements in the PS3's graphics, not-only will it pressure third-party game developers releasing games on the PS3 to step-up their game, but Sony will also be-able to offer better developer assistance.

Well I am not against exclusives but I think that it doesn't make economic sense to make an exclusive if you are a third party if your making that exclusive for ps3. Let me give you my reasoning, the system does not have a large install base. There are less systems in gamers hands and which means fewer possible buyers. I think that if the ps3's sales do not start to ramp up Metal Gear and Final Fantasy will have to go cross platform. This isn't like the last generation, you could put a game on ps2 and it would be successful no matter what, because of its huge install base. I think the first party exclusives make complete since but third parties have a hard time risking the possible sales with an exclusive. Unless Sony is dropping a major money hat in Square and Konami's lap they are going to have a hard time justifying exclusives.

Don't get me wrong, I am not against Sony, in fact I want a PS3 when the price drops and it has some games that I want to play (Ratchet, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, and Kingdom Hearts). I am a gamer and if there are games to play that I like I will buy the system.

As an owner of both platforms, I have to say, the PS3 is a barren land compared to the 360. Well, that's even an understatement. For gaming, PS3 is absolute rubbish. I don't own a single PS3 game. I just use it as a Blu-ray player. The only saving graces at this point are MGS4, Final Fantasy XIII, and Gran Turismo 5. And of those 3 games, only GT5 is guaranteed to be an exclusive..

I think Microsoft has done a commendable job of beefing up its software library this time around.. but I hate to always bring up the elephant in the room.. but they seriously need to address the hardware faults before they can move from being a contender to the dominant position. I think they have a chance, if they'll take a risk and admit to the rampant problems with the 360 hardware.. and recall it

That is just ignorant. How many problems where there last gen with all the defective PS2s that stopped reading disc? Are you implying that PS2 wasn't on top last time because of hardware defects, I think not.

Well, that is arguable.
Myself, I have had one Xbox 360 fail in one year's time. I had 3 PS2s fail in one year a few years back, before the new redesigned PSTwo came out.

I guess sometimes it's just the luck of the draw.

I'd say it was probably more widespread on the PS2... but this is mostly just based on people I know. It's definitely arguable.

The blow was softened by a few things:
1.) Sony, as part of a lawsuit supposedly, had to fix laser issues for free. Even out of warranty.
2.) While you had to pay for shipping it out there, you usually received it by 2 weeks later.

I think the time involved and the potential out of warranty costs for the 360 repairs kind of offset this and make more people angry.

Regardless, something has to be done about it.

Anyway, PS3 has its share of exclusives. There's still things that remain to be seen (MGS4, Tekken, etc), but it all seems more possible every week.

Coincidentally, the game Heavy Rain was recently re-branded as PS3 only... which is interesting since I think it was initially figured to be coming to both 360 and PS3.

I also like this comment on there:

"Once you're done paying for 3-4 years of Live , you've equaled the price-point of the PS3."

I guess somewhere around $200 is the same as somewhere around $600.

The thing would have to be $400 less expensive in four years for it to even be skewed as remotely correct lol.

I've been considering a 360 for a while now, but due to the extremely high failure rate and even recent consoles failing, I've been determined to wait. There are only a few games I really want on the 360 right now anyhow.

However, it seems like every month I wait the PS3 becomes more attractive. Look -- it has a normal video game system failure rate (estimated to be less than 1%) with the first revision. It doesn't overheat. It's less unattractive, and there are quite a few good games coming.

The 360 *is* more powerful for games than the PS3 (more fill rate, much more general purpose CPU power), but I may also become interested in having a BD player if it wins the format wars. If the PS3 is $400 or less by the time the 360 is reliable, it will be a difficult decision for me.

Exclusives are idiotic. If the cost to adapt a title to multiple platforms is less than the projected profit from the greater sale of that software it shuould be multi platform. Thats just good business.

I like the illusion of exclusivity though. How many "exclusive" titles have broken ranks over the years?

I can understand why Microsoft and Sony want to publish exclusives. They want to push their hardware sales. Software independent of Nintendo, Sony or MS, should do everything they can to maximize profits. Why should they take a loss to prop up a console manufacturer? Now if you want to cut me an obscene check to make a game exclusive we can talk but it better be disgustingly obscene.

I own both systems. I actually use the PS3 more... just not for gaming. :) I'm happy to own it for the Blu-Ray player and to stream media from my PC to it (yes, I know I can stream media to the 360 as well, but the PS3 is quiet and is always on so its easier and faster to use).

However, the writing is pretty much on the wall at this point. Sony has failed to deliver a gaming console. They're beaten. Finished. In an Xbox360 vs PS3 world, the 360 has won the war.

But it isn't an XBox360 vs PS3 world.

The XBox360 fanboys keep stomping on the PS3's bloodied corpse and they're ignoring The Flood which is creeping in all around.. I refer to the Nintendo Wii, of course.

If MS doesn't get up off its ass and start fighting back, they're going to lose this generation to that stupid waggle-box. Peter Moore, at least, seems to realize this... you don't hear much about the "Wii60" any more, do you?

360 Fanboys chortle with glee at the fact that the Wii is outselling the PS3 6-1 in Japan. But y'know, it's outselling the 360 by even more!

The future of high-def gaming is at stake here. You're going to end up with a Pyrrhic victory over the PS3 as the 360 loses more and more support to the Wii, just because your granny can bowl on the damned thing. Developers aren't going to care about the relatively small installed base of the 360 or the PS3 if the Wii craze continues for much longer...

@15:

Yeah, I realize that. But I only want one more console (I already play a Wii between 15 and 30 hours a week, and if I had more time I'd play WC3 or CS) and I'm willing to pay $400 for it. But not $600.

Heck, just last year you could get 360's for $199. But if the failure rate is still unacceptable and it's $200 + $140 in two years, that's almost $400 already. I'd say that the cost of the 360 is whatever it costs + the extended warranty, as not paying for the extended warranty is literally a bad gamble with the 360 (but a smart gamble for other consoles).

Even so, the extended warranty doesn't cover it for the life of the console.

I wish every game was made exclusivly for that console. For example in the sports genre:
2K sports could make exclusive games for PS3
EA sports could make exclusive games for 360

Neoxkc, you are not alone in your idea. I don't know anyone personally who had a PS2 and didn't have a hardware failure at some point. Now, given, they were easy to fix. For instance fixing the disc jam problem was easy: you just took the drawer apart and put it back together. A little harder was cleaning the laser. The 360 is actually not that difficult to fix either, but less people seem inclined to do it. A couple erasers and you can fix the re ring of death problem. Anyway, in my personal experience PS2 failure rates have been much worse than 360 PERSONALLY.

Can't say I see any game coming out this year for the PS3 that will get a lot of normal people to consider picking up the console. Don't really see much planned for the first half of next year either...

OK, so I guess it is Microsoft's gain..

As far as the hardware issues:
I bought a PS2 when it was $300 (I think spring of 2001) and it's still working.

I bought a 360 last January and it's still in decent shape.

I think people whose consoles overheat and die (or die from something else) stem from people playing them too much and not gettin' laid.

Nintendo was beaten twice yes. But neither time was that particular comsole a failure from the start. Also Nintendo has big games in the industry that every1 wants to play, that kept them trucking in thier time of need. Sony aint got dick to fall on, God Of War and Gran Turismo...Thats about it,and neither game is on the horizon for PS3. By the time those games do come, only the completly die hard ps3 fans will enjoy them cause the rest of the world will have wrote the ps3 off. Ps3 owners are jumping ship everyday in mass numbers. It is also hard for sony losing big in the portable market as well. The DS has put the psp over its knee and is spanking that ass hard. All that R&D wasted. The only thing sony has going for them is Blueray, and it is still too soon to see if it will defeat HD DVD for home dominance. I think companies think blueray is doing better because ps3 owners are going nutz trying to find movies for it because they have nothing else to do with thier 600 system. How many of U know or have friends that just have a stand alone blueray player? Less than 5% I'd bet. Same could be said about HD DVD, hence as I said it is too soon to tell the outcome of that particular battle. But as far as ps3 goes it's all but over. 3rd party companies are bailing outa that system at record breaking speeds. We have seen this all before in past failed consoles, history will repeat itself with the ps3.

yes lets wish for the destruction of all companies except one in the video game arena...after all, its not like competition breeds innovation and in the end benefits us all as video gamers

No no, there should only be ONE system. I mean that way EVERYONE wins right?

Give me a break.

I can understand not liking sony, hell i despise microsoft myself.

That said, i'm not going to let my hate of a company make me turn down a solid product. Thats why i have a 360, and had an Xbox even after those have been the only 2 consoles to ever break on me.

its also the reason why i have a PS3, because i still enjoy tons of PS2 games and the future prospects of the system aren't lost on me either, still i enjoy games on it RIGHT now as well.

its also why i have a Wii, because while i dont play it near as much as my 360 and PS3, Nintendo has never let me down.

So the way i see it, not liking one console, well thats fine, dont buy it, you've done your part... but anyone who actively wants a company to fail...well to me that's rather moronic. Its like you dont like having a choice and WANT there to be limits or something... i just dont get that kind of mindset at all.

Try thinking harder about it then kid.
Sony must die out of the console industry. What games will be missed if thier console fails?? Anything that is worth keeping around actually MADE by SCE, can be put on another console. It's call 3rd party and its what Sega, Panasonic/EA, Atari and SNK had to do after failing in the console industry.A) If U bought a PS3 to play ps2 games on it, then ur a stupid ass.B) If U bought a ps3 just for Resistance fall of man, see A. If U think anything else on the PS3 is worth owning from launch day right up to this very moment that isnt already on 360 then refer to A. As far as these choices U speak of.....Please explain exactly what choices Sony offers that is worth owning thier product that is actually MADE by thier development team, not published by?

It comes down to something more like this.....

Look at me! Look at me! I've got a PS3!

Berries and Cream! Berries and Cream!

UR A Tart. Go post on a neutral web site. Or better yet go post on PS3 fanboy with the other tarts.

Wow, I am speechless.

Hmm...so you're saying that the PlayStation should fail and Microsoft should be left unopposed high-end console maker. I guess you've never taken an economics class, since you would learn there that COMPETITION IS GOOD FOR CONSUMERS!!! Let's look at the handheld market as an example. When Nintendo was the only major player in the handheld gaming market, there wasn't much progression happening. Nintendo would release one true new handheld, then release a bunch of redesigns that were pretty-much rehashes of the original handheld. Once Sony came into the handheld gaming market with the PSP, Nintendo was finally pushed into being competitive which made them create the DS. It's also forced Nintendo to make their prices lower, which is good for consumers.
Competition is good and for the benefit of consumers the XBox needs to compete with the Playstation.

see ccc its just that kind of thinking i dont get... less competition is a good thing? Doesnt that go against the basic principles of business and things athat are GOOD for the consumer?

Less competition is a BAD thing, especially when general consumers are involved. With PS3 and NIntendo out there it likes a candle under MS's ass, and vice versa on the other 2 systems.

so i'm a tart because i like to play on all 3 consoles... ok, well you're a moron for being a poster boy of a corporation that doesnt need nor care for you.

by your logic there's no need for a 360 either since all those games can be made on other consoles as well. All we'd miss is halo, no big loss there right?

I mean jeez by your logic, why do we even need consoles? just make the games for the PC... everyone has one of those right?

In any case i play PS2 games on my PS3 for several reasons, saves me the need for having 2 systems hooked up instead of one, it upscales them, and well forgive me for truly enjoying some "last-gen" games... i dont know whats come over me... you're right i should only enjoy games MS tells me to enjoy.. so i should stop playing xbox and PS2 games... heck i may as well get rid of all my old gamecube, nintendo and SNES games as well...cuz i'm an idiot.

as for gmaes on the PS3 i enjoy, i enjoy right now just about as many games on my PS3 as i do on my 360, sure some games are multiplatform, but if you let that control your enjoyment of a game... you sir are an idiot and probably need to find a new hobby.

But in the end as much as you love MS, its the presence of Nintendo and Sony, that makes them bring us the great experiences we now enjoy... and there's no disputing that. AFter all its not like MS invented console gaming.

Namco would be making a very foolish decision to keep a game like Tekken or Time Crisis exclusive to the Playstation 3. Those games would make a lot more revenue and profit on the Xbox 360.

The same can be said for Square Enix with Final Fantasy 13. It would be a demonstration of stupidity in the world of business if Final Fantasy 13 were to be released exclusively for PS3.

Kingdom Hearts probably will be released for both Xbox 360. That is an excellent decision to make gamers all over the world happy, and increase revenue along with profits at the same time.

Konami would be demonstrating extreme foolishness if they did not take advantage of the upcoming E3 2007 trade show to announce Metal Gear Solid 4 for the Xbox 360. It would be smart to simultaneously release the game for both the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2008.

Compedative gaming is fine, I have no problem with that. And Im not saying Microsoft should rule supreme. Im saying Die sony. Some other company can make a console and try but sony will die. I want sony to die. In my book this is exactly what those bastards deserve. My reasons. Right now Microsoft is the greatest tool I have to achieve the goal I seek, which again is sony's demise. And beside the point, back to what #36 was saying.... Ur looking at it all wrong in terms of economics. Ur looking at it using what U learned tward the consoles, U need to be looking at the third party developers. U think there arnt a shit load of companies trying to outdue halo or gears of war? do U think they, as developers care what system it is released on in terms of better hardware? They dont. The level of cometition U talk about is at the core with the 3rd party developers and not the companies that supply the hardware platform. Loosing sony in the gamming industry is not going to hurt it at all. There will still be nintendo as there always is, and maybe a new beggining for some company in the console industry. Hell, Sony's death could very well pave the way for Sega to return to the Hardware buisness. If U dont understand yet U never will. Im done with this topic.

Well as of right now the current games i enjoy on my 360 are smackdown 2007, Samurai Warriors 2 and Overlord.

I had more but i traded em all in at the local game crazy because outside of smaurai warriors and smackdown 07, i dont play anything else very much on my 360. But i do play smackdown or Warriors almost everyday, and i really enjoy overlord which i just picked up.

as for my PS3, I play RFOM (mostly because of friends), Motorstorm (Same reason), Virtua Fighter 5 and recently i picked up darkness which i also enjoy quite a bit, t hat said i spend a lot of my PS3 time playing PS2 RPGs like Rogue Galaxy, SHin Megami Tensei, Odins sphere and so on.

as for my Wii, i'm afraid its the least played system of the 3 at this time, i usually only turn it on for VC games or to play games with my girlfriend, but i do have Wii Play/Sports and Super paper mario, but i am looking into getting RE4 possibly in a few days if i have free time to play it.

and i apologize if i made assumptions as to what you said, i may have gotten a bit defensive and i apologize for that, but my position still remains the same, i dont want to see any of the 3 companies go out of business. As i enjoy all 3 systems the companies put out
