No playable Smash Bros at Min-E3, but still coming in 2007
Game|Life reports this morning that Super Smash Bros. Brawl will not be playable at next week's adorable little E3 expo, according to one Nintendo media representative.
Though normally this would be considered bad mojo for any major title in development, we already know that Metal Gear Solid's Hideo Kojima played a "very complete" version of the game back in April. Game|Life's Chris Kohler chalks up Brawl's absence to Nintendo's limited presentation time at the newly-downsized event, and a possible plethora of new titles to show off.
As if to ease our anxieties further, the representative also emphasized that Brawl was still very much a 2007 release title. We all know how much Nintendo likes letting release dates slip, so let's hope that Brawl digs in and lands in our laps by the holiday season.

delayed to add online multiplayer ala metroid prime 3
Konny @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:55AM
They are holding off on that announcement since it will also confirm NO ONLINE MULTIPLAYER... dont want to disappoint Wii owners too much in one day (ie MP3).
Jack @ Jul 3rd 2007 9:56AM
It's probably non-playable to keep wraps on the features, stages, and characters.
Jake @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:05AM
They only have so much time to present. Pretty much anyone with a Wii is already getting Smash Bros. They will use the time to entice you to buy something that you didn't already know you were going to buy.
kingofwale @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:09AM
MP3: no online and delayed
SSB: playable no show on E3.
don't be surprise if Galaxies moves back to 08. Heck, why would Nintendo rush anything? Idoits are buying their console regardless.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:10AM
no, idiots are the ones that think they are better than someone else because they buy a toy made by a different company.
Alex @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:10AM
I'm starting to expect this sooner rather than later, to be honest.
Like.. early October.
And no, I don't expect this to have online multiplayer, and I'm glad as anything for that - who the hell wants online multiplayer without proper voice chat, and who the hell wants to play against the sort of people who break Smash Bros to hell and high water?
Three hells.
deaftly @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:14AM
prob not playable because the game isnt coming out this year, its prob delayed to make people think it will have online but at the last moment it wont, wait a minute.....
Crono @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:16AM
I guess nintendo's trying to get out all their bad news before e3 so we'll all forget or get used to the idea (ala Revolution will now be called Wii).
Man am I still pissed off about MP3
TheGuy @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:17AM
Wow, that's surprising. It was looking like Brawl would be Nintendo's main showpiece at E3, but I guess they either haven't had enough time for a playable version to look good enough for them to show at E3, or they want to focus attention on other games. I guess Nintendo is saving the best stuff for TGS lol.
X_Arre @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:18AM
@ Alex:
"Break Smash Bros. to hell and high water"?
You mean good players? Fortunately for you, "pro" smashers are the extreme minority. And because of that, most of us will probably stick to using friend codes so we can avoid noobs and play with people who give good practice.
So quit bitching
Brandon @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:19AM
I have a feeling that e3 for them is going to be a big congratulatory "pat-on-the-back-fest" focusing on tons of casual and non-games. Expect more minigame compilations, and perhaps something playable from metroid, but essentially thats all.
sheppy @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:22AM
Yeah... remember when Reggie said Metroid 3 will definately be online and we'd have several online titles by Q2 2007. That was nice...
Oh wait, that's right. This is about SSBB.... umm, yay? I mean, don't get me wrong, should be fun but my Wii is looking at one prize only... Super Mario Galaxy.
Anam @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:24AM
How about we keep the Metroid discussions in the Metroid thread, kay?
On topic: Oh.
vidGuy @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:25AM
MP3:C - Aug 27, no online multiplayer
Brawl - Holidays 07, with online multiplayer (random battles, Nintendo sets friend codes to Miis)
Galaxy - Spring 08 to Holidays 08, I really don't expect this to make a 2007 release no matter what Nintendo says
JodyAnthony @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:28AM
I wouldnt expect galaxy until christmas season of next year. As for SSBB, I see it coming out late november sometime.
insertnamehere @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:31AM
Brawl had better have online. Unlike MP3 for example, Brawl online makes a lot of sense. I am disappointed by this, but I guess Sakurai didn't want people to get their grubby hands on Smash until closer to release. Whatever they bumped Smash for had better be good.
sheppy @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:32AM
At this point, I'm going to protest. I'm not going to buy another Wii game until it's Super Mario Galaxy. Period. I'm getting tired of being told "Wii have great games like Mario Party 8, Big Brain Academy, and Pokemon Revolution." Fuck that, it's SMG or nothing.
Starting to get a bit bitter....
jay @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:42AM
18-
... Starting?
Rubix42 @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:47AM
With the Smash Bros. site up every day with new screen shots, I am keeping faith that this comes out this year. Those screens that are coming look pretty polished to me, but of course, I haven't seen it in motion.
I bet the game is done and just going through attack balancing right now.
GCNH87 @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:51AM
#3 is correct. It also takes a lot of time to just make a demo. SSBB is almost finished so Altering it to the point of demo where not too much more would be revieled is a big waist of time.
Zertoss @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:53AM
I think #4 Jake got it. Why use your limited presentation time to show off a game most Wii owners are already going to get and turn others into Wii owners.
Also, showing it off now would sort of defeat the purpose of the blog. Speaking of which, I saw that today they're saying Bowser is going to have a different flavor, whatever the hell that means.
Jonathan Tran @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:53AM
I don't care what at E3, I just want SSBB and MP3 to be awesome, also Soul Calibur Legends better be awesome, like Streets of Rage 2 awesome.
Maybe we will see soemthing more from Starcraft 2?

Lynsanity @ Jul 3rd 2007 10:59AM
I want online multiplayer. I have family in 4 different states and a girlfriend that lives 30 miles from me. We are all gamers. We all want this game.
I am not concerned about cheaters or cheesers. I want to play with the ppl I know.
Jonathan Tran @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:02AM
@22 I am pretty sure they mean they will be going for Cajun Grilled this time, instead of Kung Pao
icicle0424 @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:19AM
as others have said, we get 5 updates on smash bros a week, they're using their time to show something else that we possibly haven't seen or haven't seen in a while (what happened to Project HAMMER and Disaster:Day of Crisis?)
Also, Brawl had better have online... I'll buy it regardless (if I could, I would have already preordered it), but the difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little "extra". Metroid was never meant to be a multiplayer shooter, it would have been nice to have something like that, but story mode's what it's all about. Smash Bros was meant to be a multiplayer all-out brawl, and what better way to do that than with some people you've never met from across the country or the world?!
a.j. @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:26AM
everyone needs to go outside and take a walk. i've never heard so many people crying about shit.
blk_ballard @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:32AM
Okay, everyone just calm down! First off, Metroid. The developers never said that MP3 would have online multiplayer. They always said they wanted to put all focus into the single player and make that the best as possible. I actually recall an interview with IGN where they said this, but I don't have the link. So to be honest, I don't know what you all are bitching about. On a side note, I thought that Prime Hunters was terrible online so this can only be viewed as a win.
Secondly, Brawl. Calm down! Just because it isn't in playable form at mini E3 does not mean that it's a 2008 title. Hell, there is a blog updating on it's status daily. Get a grip. If I recall there have been a lot of games not shown at E3 but still made it out of the gate by the end of the year. Hell, SMG was shown at E3 last year and that still isn't out. Maybe this is a good thing. However I don't think there will be online, but I'm probably wrong on that one.
As for Galaxy, this is the only one I'm skeptical about. Iwata is the king of delaying games to make them perfect. I have no doubt that SMG will be the prime example for how to use the Wii controller, but I think it's a close call to say that will be out by Christmas. If they do get all of these out in time then they might as well hand Nintendo the console war because not even Halo 3 can take on these 3 alone.
baby sea tuna @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:33AM
@ 26. Project HAMMER got shitcanned. S'okay, looked like a one-note-symphony anyway.
As for SSBB, I'm okay with this anouncement. I don't need any more information on it outside of online capability, which it better fucking have.
Neebs @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:48AM
Didn't Game|Life also report they had a reliable source telling them it was going to be World of Starcraft?
samfish @ Jul 3rd 2007 11:54AM
Nintendo has said Brawl would have online multiplayer in the past.
Nintendo also had said that Prime would NOT have online multiplayer in the past.
Stop whining, girls.
sheppy @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:25PM
Reggie also said Metroid Prime WOULD be a WiFi game in the past. But I'm not really worried about that. And having four player splitscreen on that game would be horrid.
My problem is simply SMG, where is it. Why are they all too quiet on it?
s256 @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:33PM
Brawl WILL be online. They've said so on numerous occasions. It's also coming out this year, as has been said on numerous occasions.
Calm down.. lol
JodyAnthony @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:38PM
reggie said that when it comes to diner toast, mixed fruit jelly is the best.
Blazur @ Jul 3rd 2007 12:58PM
sheppy, I've already reached the stage of bitterness. Lack of online play and a surplus of childish mini-games has diminished my interest in this console altogether. I've made a pact with myself in stating that if SSBB lacks online play I'm ebaying my Wii.
kingofwale @ Jul 3rd 2007 1:11PM
>They've said so on numerous occasions. It's also coming out this year, as has been said on numerous occasions.
yeah, 'cause Nintendo has NEVER had a history of lying about things. ;)
Mr Khan @ Jul 3rd 2007 1:34PM
Everyone just seems to assume that Nintendo or Retro Studios themselves actually said anything about Online Multiplayer for MP3, they never did, it was just speculation from outsiders, and Nintendo being coy about it (remember when asked if "perfect" would include online play, Reggie simply said "perfect for YOU" with emphasis on the last word, indicating not perfect to themselves"
Brawl is a different case, Sakurai has been saying since the earliest days that WiFi would be implemented in some way, but that there would be hurdles to be crossed
I expect that Galaxy will be the premier showpiece this time, and if it doesn't show much new content at E3, then expect a delay to 08
synce @ Jul 3rd 2007 1:53PM
Joystiq, please stop it with the witty headings. You're becoming more annoying than Gamespot.
Platy @ Jul 3rd 2007 1:54PM
wich means that they will have at least a new video .... maybe with a joke/omfg at the end too ? =D
NintendoFanbot @ Jul 3rd 2007 1:55PM
Without all the idiots that sneak into Mini-E3 to play the games, get 'swag' and fall over booth 'babes' there's no one to really play the games anymore. So why not? Mini-E3 isn't E3 anymore.
As for myself, I'm waiting for Battallion Wars II. :)
Admiral_Mike @ Jul 3rd 2007 2:05PM
@JodyAnthony
I feel sorry for you. You got caught up in the hype like i did. Sure its selling well, but the jelly bubble will burst soon. In fact my mixed fruit jelly just collects dust now, I'm gonna ebay it.

Apparently you've mistaken Joystiq for a message board. It is not. It is a blog. These are not topics and threads. They are blog entries. User comments are just that: user comments. They are not posts.
So how about you just quit trying to play the "moderator" role, mind your business, and go back to thrilling us with your useful insights.
Such as, "Oh."
sheppy @ Jul 3rd 2007 2:43PM
See, I'm not going to Ebay my Wii. WHY?!?
Simply put, I'd just have to rebuy it when SMG comes out AND this way I get to keep my gamesaves, VC dls, and Miis intact AND I save myself from the public embarassment of yelling out a phrase like "I'm just going to Ebay it off."
Win win, baby.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 3rd 2007 2:51PM

syco @ Jul 3rd 2007 6:44PM
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
SCREW online multiplayer.
It's worthless.
Brad Lee @ Jul 3rd 2007 7:32PM
If Brawl doesn't have online multiplayer, I'll be very pissed. Metroid was always designed with a single player adventure in mind, not multiplayer, so I don't really care if Metroid is missing online play (that and Hunters online was so infuriating). But Smash Bros was ALWAYS designed as a multiplayer game, and I always thought Smash Bros would be an intense online experience, so if it isn't online, I will be both mad with fury and furiously mad.
@ sheppy
Dudja try out RE4 for Wii? I know, it's mostly a copy and paste affair, but it has the PS2 extras, and it has, I think, the greatest controls on the Wii yet. Red Steel and all the others have been wonky, but RE4 is perfect. I kick so much more ass in Mercenaries Mode because of the controls.
Cuja @ Jul 4th 2007 1:37AM
They're delaying till early 2008, so that for people who waited so long for its release find out its Wii makeover of the Gamecube version will still buy it anyway.
Admiral_Mike @ Jul 4th 2007 1:54AM
@KIMOY
Try reading my post next time. I was commenting on fruit jelly, while making fun of trolls. As a matter of fact. I love my wii and use it almost daily. And yes I am looking foward to all those games.
X_Arre @ Jul 4th 2007 12:03PM
@ Cuja:
I don't think All those new chaacters, stages, online, and new Graphics were in Melee.
Nice try, but it dosn't apply to everything. You'll have to move on to another mindless comment to cling to.
