Japanese game market up 25% in June, Nintendo wins big
Yet again we've got a story about Nintendo dominating the Japanese game market. For the month of June, total sales in the region were up 25.4 percent, according to a report from Famitsu Market Data Service (via GameDaily). That breaks down to a 48.4 percent increase in hardware sales and 7.5 percent increase in software sales.
Those who keep up with our Japanese hardware sales feature won't be surprised to see these total monthly sales figures (values are approximate):

I remember not too long ago, thinking that Nintendo was on the way out. After losing with the N64, and then with the Gamecube, and Sony on their tails in the portable market with the super powerful PSP. I thought their days were numbered. What a surprise this turned out to be.
Kenny @ Jul 4th 2007 11:52AM
So did the PS3 outsell the GBA yet? This is important.
KilgoreTrout XL @ Jul 4th 2007 12:00PM
great pic guys.

Yes...I remember the days when reading post about Nintendo on the blogs and forums was painful. People bag on how Nintendo sucks, and how they would never beat Sony, how the PSP would KILL the DS, and what Nintendo SHOULD do and every move they would do was wrong wrong wrong(Remember the day they said hat the Revolution was going to be called the Wii? Or the day Nintendo didn't have a console that was no wear NEAR as powerful as the PS3 or 360 and it look liek it was the same old Nintendo?)....
Yeah, good times..good times..
hvnlysoldr @ Jul 4th 2007 12:04PM
In America PS3 just squeezed 1k above GBA. In Japan it's dead as the Xbox1.

I love Nintendo making a lot of money, but what they are going to do with this money.
They need to spend most of this.
Like buy IBM's top servers to make best on-line gaming ever.
Or take-over many game publisher companies to sell only on Nintendo SKUs. (Example TakeTwo and Atari need money)
But sadness thing, they never will spent this money.
Jonathan Tran @ Jul 4th 2007 12:23PM

Wii is now almost outselling ps3 7 to 1 in japan

Owns is spelled without an 'e'.
Nice pic but I think I prefer the Ds one.
I really need to get back into my DS and Pokeman as well.
I wish to God the Ninty would pull their finger out with the online issues. It's not exactly new or scary. And if people really want to contact (more vulnerable) people they'll find a way, so they may as well include voice chat.

Sadly it's still like this on Nintendo's own forums. Ugh.

I'm 22, engaged, and work full time as a software developer.
I play pokemon. There is no age limit to enjoying a video game.

the only problem with the wii is its crap. Everyone who buys it gets tired of it fast and with no games coming out for some time, what are you to do. My brother bought a luanch wii and its STILL sitting unhooked in his room since he beat zelda back in december. The wii is selling great because of its price. This xmas, its going to sell well again because of thise fact. My parents bought me a nes, snes and n64 for xmas when I was younger, but it was a gift to me and my brother. No way in hell my parents would spend the kind of money a 360 or ps3 costs for an xmas gift. This is the only reason nintendo is winnning. Once the 360 and ps3 have big price drops, I can see the wii becoming a dud.
As for the DS, well that has lots of good games it seems and the psp does not stand a chance.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 4th 2007 2:28PM
i was playing my wii for 4 hours today (2 hours of re4, 2 hours of zelda 2 on the vc)
I got my wii at midnight on launch day. I still play it quite a bit.
but anecdotal evidence and all that.
and as for chill, really, you are better than the rest of us, we understand. I mean after all, all we do is have fun with games, but you, well to you video games are the only thing important, and if there is no blood and tits in the game, well then the game is worthless, right? or maybe you are just a pathetic worthless troll who has nothing better to do than pretend you are better than everyone else because the toy you buy is made by a different company than the toy we buy.

IM IN UR GAMESTOPZ TAKIN UR MONEYZ
rfom @ Jul 4th 2007 2:44PM
The real test will come nextyear when the PS3 drops price into a more affordable range, and you have 20-30 AAA games on PS3 / 360 but not on wii.
And even with the current pace, the wii would have sold about 12-14 million by then - that still much less than the 21 mil of Gamecube. Can it hit 40 million? For that it has to continue this pace for 3-4 years, despite most leading third party games giving it a miss.
Paviel @ Jul 4th 2007 2:53PM
@ mike:
Not everyone who buys it gets tired of it fast. If they did, there'd be a lot more Wiis on ebay (not to mention on store shelves) now that it's been out for more than seven months. And its price on ebay wouldn't be nearly as high.
And Nintendo is making a profit off of every Wii sold, which is more than Sony and Microsoft can say for their consoles. If Sony and Microsoft can cut the prices of their consoles, so can Nintendo.
As for "no games coming out for some time", well, I need your definition of "some time" to properly respond to that argument, but the nearest big hitter for the Wii will probably be Metroid Prime 3, which comes out in about a month and a half.
Tim Braun @ Jul 4th 2007 3:32PM
That picture kills me! Hahahhahahahaa!
JodyAnthony @ Jul 4th 2007 3:32PM
rfom your whole argument rests on there being no AAA titles on wii. youd have to be stupid to think that.
what you gotta do is embrace all of the consoles. thats the only way to really win.
im buying myself either a 360 or ps3 in november after my wedding (promised the bride-to-be that i wouldnt get one before then) and whichever i dont get then i will pick up early next year. Until then i'll enjoy my wii, ds, psp, and ps2 (+ my classic consoles) and enjoy reading about ps3/360. I love not pointlessly being tied to some corporation for god only knows what reason.
mr nimblewick @ Jul 4th 2007 3:45PM
The reason, Jody, is that not everyone has the spending money you do. Or the time. You are lucky to have a fiance who lets you play games that much. Mine wouldn't stand for me having more than one system.
So, yes, I want my system to do better than all of the others. I want all of the great games on my system. I don't want to be in the position I was last time with my precious Dreamcast.
Really, buying all of the consoles is a HUGE investment, especially with the silly prices on two of them.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 4th 2007 3:52PM
darn, chill showed me! I cant believe what a fool i was to question him. woe is me.

Denial is the most predictable of all human responses. :)
Kite @ Jul 4th 2007 4:49PM
I don't think anyone can go around guessing things on this data. It is newsworthy, not saying it isn't. But it was quite predictable. The folks at nintendo Japan will be happy :).
I would like to know one thing. The 'total sales went up...', is it for nintendo only or for video games in general. It would be easy if that was clarified.
But as far as using this data to predict the future...hmm. It only gives trolls an excuse to spout their crap in my opinion.
And slightly off-topic:
Another day, another debate about whose rattle is better.
Can't you just stay on topic for one post? Even if it 'relieves you from work'.
I can go around all day saying 'I can do this site better', but I would love a moderation system à la Engadget.
rick @ Jul 4th 2007 4:51PM
I also think the real test for the Wii will be in 2-3 years time when HDTVs are more commonplace and the hype over it dies down. Probably wont matter though as the big N would have raked in Billions by then anyway :)
Koopaknight29 @ Jul 4th 2007 5:14PM
Ahh, its good to be back from vacation. Seems that not a lot has changed since I've been gone... although it's good to see fresh meat. Well met, Chill, may you last longer than GodisaMyth.
Glad to see that Nintendo is on the up and up, not that it's suprising anymore. What's interesting to me is is the PS3 in the 40,000 range. Three weeks ago I remember it falling below 9,000 (or was that in the States?). Mind telling me when the turnaround happened
Oh and great GIF use there Miller!
melloncollie @ Jul 4th 2007 5:19PM
@40
Obviously #37 is speaking from experience. Again, he said "Denial is the most predictable of all human responses.", which you could take to mean (by critically thinking) that all humans have experienced denial in some form or another (i.e. a=b, b=c, therefore a=c). Seriously Chill, stop being a fool.
#36 was being sarcastic about the whole "Let's fight about it" thing.
All in all, you're acting like an idiot in this article.
Now, on topic:
This is good news.
I've some shares in Nintendo.
This means nothing but good times for me.
Chill @ Jul 4th 2007 5:37PM

@41 the 9,000 was for the weekly sales the 40,000 is for the month of june.

"21. the only problem with the wii is its crap. Everyone who buys it gets tired of it fast and with no games coming out for some time, what are you to do."
I aways love this line... like people own research companies and can tell you 'everyone gets tired of it fast'. Quite the opposite in my experience... most people I know -don't- get tired of it... If people got tired of it, they wouldn't spread the good word to their friends, who now currently still wait in lines for a Wii, almost 8 months after launch... Between Wii Sports, Wii Play, Mario Party, Trauma Center, Resident Evil, Brain Academy, Excite Truck, Paper Mario (cue the blind responses of "those games suck, lol, play some Motorst0rm FTW...) and countless VC titles (cue the "lol, those are overpriced" response).
No games coming out for some time? We just got RE 4.5the Bigs, and Pokemon last month, Mario Strikers comes out this month in the US (fantastically addictive game), as well as Metroid Prime 3 next month, followed by Smash Brothers, Manhunt 2, and Super Mario Galaxy (with lower profile, but still quality titles scattered in between). LOLx10

Thanks for the clear up, Chill, thought as much.
Now if I could only figure out your Pokemon stigma... seriously man its not -that- bad to like a time waster RPG like Pokemon.
If you don't like it, fine, but done hate the person who does. It makes you sound like a pompous bigot (as you can see by all of your deleted posts), and the only other pompous bigot we have on this site is Jack Thompson.
You don't want to be like -him-, do you?

At some point there will be enough Wiis out there that it will hit a tipping point in market penetration to where the notable lack of HD support won't matter anymore. The problem is that its a race to be indelibly ingrained in the marketplace before the cheap 720p on up TV becomes so
I agree though, that picture is funnier than hell
