Lost, Alias composer scored Medal of Honor Airborne
Anyone who has turned on a TV in the last few years has probably heard some of Michael Giacchino's compositions. Check the credits on Lost or Alias and you'll see his name, and stick around after The Incredibles and Ratatouille to find him there as well. Now Giacchino has added another videogame to his growing body of work. EA announced today that the award-winning composer scored the music for Medal of Honor Airborne, set for release in late August. This comes just after he was announced as the composer for Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. But Michael Giacchino aren't the first to take a game's soundtrack seriously. James Michael Dooley created the music for SOCOM 3, while composer Austin Wintory has focused more on video games as of late, including both the PC and PS3 versions of flOw. And let's not forget the cosmic Legend of Zelda soundtrack.

"Now Giacchino has added a videogame to his growing body of work."
That's funny because the dude STARTED in videogames. See: every Medal of Honor game.

I think you may have forgotten that Giacchino was the original composer for Medal of Honor, scoring the first three games in the series. He also scored the equally successful WWII game Call of Duty. I've always been a huge fan of Giacchino's work in Medal of Honor and having him back is the best news for the series in a long time.

And don't forget Harry Gregson-Williams for MGS2 and MGS3

Yeah, at least the first three games. He's got a Jurassic Park videogame credit before the MoH series, too.

Didn't he do Mercenaries too?

Thanks for the top two posters for pointing out the obvious, and saving me from doing the same.

Does he do thematic soundtracks or the "making ambiance" tracks we usually get from American video game "composers"?
I hope it's the former. I think it's about time we have well-known video game composers like Japan has.

I think he did BLACK as well.

I understand that this is a "blog" site but seriously, can we get just a tiny bit of research? A more fitting title would be "Hollywood composer comes back to his roots"? I don't know... just put a little effort into it next time.

@Steve - Giacchino is still very much a cinematic American composer in his style, but I don't find his music to be boring at all. Though Japanese composers like Uematsu, Kondo, and Mitsuda are celebrated more often by gamers for their catchier thematic soundtracks, I wouldn't say that Giacchino is their lesser peer just because his style isn't quite the same. At the very least, I still count many of the Medal of Honor tunes among the most memorable I've ever heard in a video game. Give'em a listen!

Helpful anyone?

Michael Giacchino is in a whole other universe than Austin Wintory and James Dooley. Giacchino has WON an Emmy and Dooley is scoring Daddy Day Camp...yeah.

@Jezreel - I will give them a listen then. I just want game companies to give a damn about their music. I swear so many games just have throw-away tracks that have me wondering why they bothered at all. If he's not part of that trend, then I'm already a fan.

Love the little choo-choo train!
Phaty000 @ Jul 4th 2007 7:18PM
Giacchino has done many games before...including the older MoH games...
But thats besides the point. Giacchino, while very American-esque, makes themes that rival that of the popular Japanese composers.
He is damn good.

Giacchino could probably be best compared to Goldsmith and Williams in their respective heydays, in terms of his use of leitmotif and thematic development. He's one of the rising stars in the business.
But, again, this is hardly news.

Interesting story on why he left MOH series in the first place (hint: Call of Duty)...

Sweet karma for his return!
