Man, weird! I actually wrote in to them and asked them about all of this since I figured I might get a response... namely I was confused why it says 5 days turnaround time on the site, but I was told 15.

And then a few days later, this. I already paid the $140, but I am very happy that I will be getting it back.

This is AWESOME! While I haven't experienced the dreaded "three rings of death" (I probably just jinxed myself), it is awesome to know that MS will do their customers right by extending the warranty. The only question I have is why did it take so long?

So what happens with people who paid for an extended warranty? Is it added on top of the three years? Five years?

Wow....I dont care what anyone will be saying about this.

3 Year Warranty FTW!

This is awesome. I don't care if they ever admit anything. Keep on rolling with this. Let's make a 5 year warranty or better LIFETIME. Hell, if they do that I'll buy 5 more. More Warranty less fear. I'm happy now.

If you read Peter Moore's letter they basically say they are. Recalling 10 million systems would be insane.

Great move MS! Def gives piece of mind to future buyers. Go ahead SDF...keep using this as your ONLY ammunition. I continue to be impressed with they're customer service.

On a side note, I was pissed for a while because I bought an Elite while my premium was being repaired (for free in 8 days!) and couldn't access my content offline...at all. So they had me set up a silver account and gave me all of my microsoft points back. Just over 79,000 of them (I have had my system since launch). They had me download everthing again, and now all of my content works offline on my Elite! Plus I have just over 17,000 points left over for whatever I want.
Anybody with this issue should call them and let them know you would like to get your points back. It took a couple of days but they actually called me back! Once again the best customer service around. BRAVO.

Tony Han, did you read the 4th paragraph?

"We have been following this issue closely, and with on-going testing have identified several factors that can cause a general hardware failure indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. To address this issue, and as part of our ongoing work, we have already made certain improvements to the console."

Apparently, the fix involves a new heatsink arrangement, glueing the CPU, and INCREASING THE FAN SPEED BY 30%

Sweet - they just extended my repair time from 15 days to 25 WORKING days for the sum of £80. I complained and they offered me a little something in compensation, I doubt they'd do that after the announcement.

This is a great offer by Microsoft! (sarcasm)
What a joke..god forbid they just made it properly the first time, there is no excuse for the kind of returned systems they have been getting. I'll be honest, after reading this I was kinda getting excited about maybe getting one now, but my gut tells me the PS3 is a much more reliable system to invest in, regardless of the price.

So, Red Ring of Death isn't the only thing that is killing consoles. The three year warranty is the right thing. But what about the other problems. Lockups, Disc Read Errors and the like. http://www.theconsoletracker.com Sign up, put your data in. Make sure everyone gets to know the real failure rates.

yes, the PS3 is more reliable. it's a shame very little developers have the time to create games for that labyrinth.

i don't care how powerful it is, or how reliable, games will always come out at a trickle until developers take a class in PS3 programming.

go buy a PS3. and wait until this happens.

Will this announcement do more harm than good?

Before this announcement, I doubt the public knew anything about the "Red Ring of Death". They may have just scared off a lot of potential buyers...

See the Sony Fanboys are poping up making comments on a 360 site because they don't have any games to play on the Piece of Shit 3. Soo Sad. MS will still be ahead of the PS3 a year from now while MS will still be churning out games while Sony will be showing pre-rendered shots of games that still aren't out.

I think it's a great move by MS. They are doing something about this problem some users are having. Whether it's an epidemic or not is debatable, but at least they are stepping up to the plate. I didn't get a launch system, I waited a year. My friends got theirs and out of the ten of them that got it on launch only one had a problem with his.

All together I know only two people who've had the RROD so my experience is different from others. Doesn't mean it didn't happen. It's nice to see a company stepping up and covering all systems sold, unlike Sony who had to be sued before they fixed those broken PS2's.

Maybe people will take better care of their systems, this time around.

I was really excited to hear the news about this. This is a huge gesture by MS to it's loyal customers worldwide. Unfortunately it's still not enough. Even if it costs them a billion dollars.

I got the other common issue of the video disappearing and just had sound back in Feb/Mar while I was beta testing Shadowrun. The colors got disorted and I tried reseting the system. When I rebooted I noticed I had lost all video. I forked up the $140 for repairs since I was out of warranty and two day fedexed it becasue MS stopped giving out boxes at that point. Plus I wanted to speed up the process. All they did was send me a replacement (probably refurbised) console and ship it back snail mail. The one they sent me has a glich where the lights keep flickering back and forth between the 1st and 2nd lights when it's trying to ientify the controllers when it's in the vertical posistion It seems to go away when laid horizontal. I never complained about it til now becasue I was just happy to have a working system again.

With this announcement today I decided to call Xbox to see if my problem was covered under this new warranty and to find out if I would be reimbursed for my repairs I had done earlier this year. Unfortunately I found out that just becasue I didn't get the f'ing red lights of death I get shafted and get nothing.

That's total BS MS and uncool. Way to half ass it. It makes sense why Peter kept say the 3 red rings.

When are people with my problem going to get our due.

Congrats to all the lucky red light winners winners.

I think for some people this is too late. I had an issue with my console and the customer service was a joke, it was more hassle to get the console sent in for repair than it was worth and I think for some people, this whole issue put them off and drove them to Sony and Nintendo. I'm not over the moon about this news. Frankly, it should of been there from the start and Microsoft should have acknowledged this issue sooner instead of making itself look silly by hiding behind that "industry failure rate" argument. I think the best thing from this is that it shows that we as consumers are a powerful force and are not going to lie down to Microsoft.

I'm not a big fan of Microsoft but I do enjoy my 360. Even so I must say this is very well appreciated. A three year warranty is MASSIVE. And when you consider it includes ALL 360's ever sold. That's amazing. Thank you Microsoft (Never thought I would be saying that) LOL

It's about damn time!!!!!

MSFT should've done this a long time ago, but better late than never. I'll give credit to them anyway for FINALLY acknowledging that there IS an "unacceptably high" rate of failure issue with this system, and taking responsibility for it. That goes a long way to restoring my confidence in them as a company.

For all you doubting loser fanboys among us who constantly attacked those of us with failures as liars and console abusers, I could just say "suck it!" for finally being proven right ... but that would be just as classless as you've been (lol). Fact is you should now THANK US for not letting go of what we knew all along to be a REAL issue, since you too will now benefit if/when you join the RROD club.

(I honestly hope you never do, truly)

This is a good day for ALL of us Xbox 360 owners. Owners, thank yourselves for finally forcing this policy change.

I had problems as well its too bad they didn't do it before, I already opened my consoled and fixed it myself. But if it will happen again I will not have a warranty.

I did find a great site that help you fix it:

I wish I had known this sooner, I got the R.R.O.D about a month ago and was told that the machine was out of warranty. I had someone try to repair it (figured that it was out of warranty so what the heck) and it still doesn't work. Am I covered or do I just have to go out and get a new one. :(
