Is it annoying when people ask and answer their own questions?

Yes.

If this be true, I might consider a purchase. Still, $399.00 is my personal sweet spot.

This is so far beyond a rumor. I can't see how Sony could not drop the price at E3. It's just so necessary for them...

All we (I) need now is a 360 price drop to follow suit, and we'll (I'll) be set! :)

Hmmm... store-forced price drops? I don't know, if this is real - cool, but is shelf space really that valuable?

Look at the ad - it says (in little fuzzy letters) "reg. $599". This is a just a temporary, Circuit City only sale. (But a good one to be sure.)

My own personal sweet spot is more like $300. That's not to say I don't like the price break, mind you - they've just got a bit to go to convince me to buy in. That's the problem with letting the 360 get such a large lead in the market share - people are only willing to pay less, not more, for a second console.

Probably gonna put more 360 Elites in their place.

Yippy that would mean a 50 dollar price drop in canada since during realease it was 649.99 then a month later they jacked it up to 699.99. and thats with our dollar actually running near par with the us.

Maybe their Whole strategy has been to make the console horribly expensive for half a year, then drop the price and people will be like WOW what a bargain!!!!

I have one that I paid $499.99 (EB Refurb) and it's still not worth it.

I wonder if it will be like launch where a bunch sell right at first and then it trickles to a stop while everyone else waits for it to hit $399.99

Still, $500 is the price of a BluRay player and I can tell you it's the only reason I have one right now.

I'm confused. I thought stores bought PS3s, Wiis and all the rest at cost. Is Circuit City really willing to take a hundred loss on each console? For what purpose?

DG,

I'm not sure what the figures are but I think stores were making something like $19 on each Wii sold, so they probably make ~$20 - $30 for each PS3 sale at MSRP. That'd put them at a $70 loss or so for each sale at this price... they are probably hoping (or requiring?) customers buy games and accessories at the same time, and/or wanting to clear the shelf space for other, more sales-worthy products.

Apparantly this is the official price drop. Though I don't think this is going to be the miracle that sony/fanboys have been waiting for, especially when most of the heavy hitters will be coming out sometime in 2008-2009. Also keep in mind that Microsoft could in retaliation lower the price themselves, and with big games coming out before the end of 2007, it could send sony back in the same position they were before.

Wiis are dold at a profit, When I managed Babbage's we sold all the systems forlike $1 over what we paid. This was PS2 launch time. The accessories have a huge markup, games were about $10 profit

Damn...I was kinda hoping that Sony would make hell freeze over and send shockwaves throughout the gaming community by announcing at E3 to a group of dazed onlookers that the PS3's price cut will, in fact, be cut by $200!!! and not the mere $100 that everyone expected.
Oh well...On the bright side a $100 price cut is just $200 off the price I'm willing to pay...yay.

No the PS3 will not be almost the same price as the Elite because the only reason Microsoft havent dropped their price is it was ALREADY a lot cheaper than PS3. Once PS3 price drops (for good) the 360 will drop accordingly. Its only logical sense, no point dropping the price while its a good deal but they will HAVE to drop it once the gap in price is closer.

Even after the much sought after price cut comes, the trolls are still out. It just makes you sound like whiny little girls who will never be satisfied. Oh wait...that is what you are.
Early adoption is always the most expensive tech wise. Do I buy the 8800GTX for $600 now or wait until next year and get it for 4 or even $350.
I don't think this is the last deal coming down the pipe either before Sony makes an official price cut.

To those asking how CC can do this...

Surely, like the $300 360 (non-cores) at Microcenter last November, the manufacturer (Sony in this case, MS then) is participating by putting in some money (for promotional sake?).

Just like those cheap 360s at that time, there is no guarantee this will be the permanent new price through all outlets (at least for a while). But of course there will be some price drop before the Xmas shopping season.

Official across-the-board PS3 price cut "confirmed" by an anonymous representative for a major retailer.

It's not quite official confirmation from Sony, but it's looking pretty likely now.

Which is funny, because I've been screaming as loud as anybody for this, but I think they should have waited until fall, timed it with the release of some major titles, and dropped it $150 instead of $100...

Oh well.

@Spitkicker

I didn't say they would panic. I just merely argued that it would make them look competitive, not panic like #39 posted :).

Microsoft and Nintendo are both in good positions in market share, sales numbers, and ability to drop their price. Sony isn't doing well in any of those categories.
