Say what you want, but at $499 + 5 free BluRay movies (even if the selection is limited and not so great), and I guarantee you a LOT more PS3s are going to move come July 15th. I have two friends that have been on the fence for a while, waiting for something to happen. Both are going to buy at $499, the free BluRay movies are just icing. Though I still don't think they'll get the mainstream folks at five hundred bucks, I guarantee you they are going to get all the people that already have a 360 and have been looking for a reasonable deal on PS3.

I also have to say, at this point the argument that there are "no games" for PS3 is getting a little invalid. PS3 has Oblivion and R6 Vegas now, which are without a doubt the top titles in their respective genres on 360. Sigma is great, as are MotorStorm and Resistance. All the major new mainstream titles (Burnout, Madden, GTA IV) are coming to PS3 too. Interestingly, with the price drop happening right now... it happens to be right before BioShock, Mass Effect, and Halo 3. Not bad timing if you ask me. I think Microsoft will be pressured to drop the 360 price, but this is a rough time for them don't you think? They just chalked up a $1b loss with the 3 year warranty announcement...

Seems timed for E3. If they announce a price drop at E3, people will wait for the price to come into effect, so it makes sense that the price drop take effect immediately after E3.

Official word will come from Sony at their E3 press conference with the new price going into effect the next day, July 12.

On a related note, I very much doubt this change will affect the 360. Next week they'll still hold a bigger library of games, a better online service and it'll still be cheaper than the PS3. If the PS3 really begins to pick up in the fall when some high profile games are finally released MS may make a move. I wouldn't expect anything soon though, especially with the announced of the hit they'll be taking on the 3-year warranty extension. Not to mention all the refunds to be handed out.

Whoa, I'm glad I caught this. I was planning to buy an Xbox360 shortly, but if Sony drops their price MS might follow suit to try to knock some of the wind out of Sony's sales. If the good 360 would find it's way on down to 300 I'd be much happier to pony up the cash.

Great, another $500 Blu-Ray player. As #55 said - if $500 was a big deal, the 20GB PS3s would have been flying off the shelves. I have a computer with a card reader, and I have a wired connection to my entertainment center. I'm glad I didn't have to pay for that in my 360...

it doesn't matter wake me up when its $400 . People don't care about blu-ray and no quality games.

Maybe if pS3 was $500 and comes with Resistance Fall of Man, and Spiderman 3 Blu-Ray now that would be impressive.

wow.

you people are never satisfied are you?

$499 20gig PS3 and $599 60gig PS3 announced: "i'm not paying $$500 for the 'tard pack' PS3! the PS3 is too expensive! it is teh suck! they should just axe the 20gig and sell the 60gig at $500"

Sony drops the 20gig sku and drops the price of the "Premium" 60gig PS3 by $100: "it's still useless and has no games! wah wah wah goo goo gah gah, i'm a whiny little b*tch who can't be happy about anything, even when i get what i want!"

get over yourselves people.

i was an early adopter, and i still feel that my PS3 was worth it at $600.

this price drop is *AWESOME for those that didn't want to pay $600 for the system.

look at it this way:

the 360 Elite is $480, and does *NOT come with Wi Fi. does *NOT come with an HD drive built in. does *NOT come with memory stick readers for things like digital cameras and PSP memory sticks. oh, and it also doesn't come with free online gaming.

the Wi Fi adaptor is an extra $100. the HD DVD drive is an extra $200. it has no support for memory stick readers.

for $499, just $20 more, the PS3 *COMES with, a built in WiFi adaptor, memory stick readers, a built in Blu Ray drive, and free online. *AND, if the 60 gig HDD isn't big enough, the PS3 is compatible with any external HDD, and any 2.5" SATA HDD that you can pop inside.

and considering that the old argument of "the PS3 and 360 are getting the same games, so why should i pay more for the PS3?' has a solid answer: get the PS3, as it has more features, for a reasonable price, with no external add ons, and free online.

sure, MS will probably drop the price at E3 also, but you'd still have to spend money on the added periphials if you *NEEDED what the PS3 is offering.

personally, i love Blu Ray movies. i'm using the Wi Fi because me and my roommates have 4 computers, 2 PS3's, 1 X Box, 1 X Box 360, 2 PS2s, and 3 PSPs. all connected to the internet, most at the same time.

the included Wi Fi in the PS3 has made it so i don't have to constantly plug and unplug items when i want to do something online on the PS3.

the 360 is a great machine (though not so much hardware wise), but if you want a fully-featured multi-media device, the PS3 is the way to go, especially at a $499 price tag.

I work at CC and have been gaming for a long time. Two things I would like to mention about all of this speculation. The first is that the ad looks like a 100% legit copy (been working there long enough to know about the models on the left side of the page are correct with upcoming prices, although I haven’t seen the ad I will now go look for it), no to all the people that say this is a temporary price drop (that is called a sale, a price break is when something is definite and will stick), no to all the people that say we have a ton of these in the warehouse and all we are trying to do is to lure people in to buy crap (I actually see more ps3’s leaving than 360’s, plus we hardly have any now). The second thing I would like to point out is people need to give the ps3 a freaking break. I mean seriously there are a lot of people who spend all night refreshing a page hoping another news article will come out about the ps3 or 360 or for some person to leave a comment on said systems to bash the living crap out of it (I have always noticed people talk crap about something when they feel threatened by it or are jealous). I will give it to the 360 for a better graphics card, online support (now), and the only game in its’ entire library that is not even out yet (sorry but gears of war is lame, great graphics but game play sucks, it’s slow, and uhh… it’s slow). I mean Halo 3 and the previous titles are great and all, but I have had way more fun playing battlefield 2 then I have ever had playing a halo game. Also played Forza 2 and while the graphics are pretty good, I still think Gran Turismo 4 controls better. But with Home coming in the fall, AAA titles coming out (dmc4, gt5, mgs4, ff13, heavenly sword, haze, re5, lair, aitd, ratchet and clank, little big planet, uncharted, warhawk, ngs, …), new controller, I think it has a very bright future. I know people are going to complain about how some of these titles are also coming out for the 360, don’t care I still get to play it, how people are going to talk smack about the new controller and price cut because someone in the past said something otherwise, but you people are retarded because you are complaining about nothing. I mean we all cried for a price drop, rumble, new network, better backwards compatibility, and they ARE listening and giving it to us, which is awesome, and all people want to do is whine. Sony made the right decisions I think, not all of them, but most. I mean blu-ray (the current winning format) is important because you can only compress stuff so much on a freaking dvd, we know this from movies and music that uncompressed stuff sounds and looks so much better. Plus I have an HD tv, most gamers have an HD tv either for there ps3, wii, or 360, and more and more people are getting them and gee wouldn’t it be nice to watch hd movies on my hd tv. The ps2 was my first dvd player for my tv and I enjoyed it and used it a lot. Also the elite carries HDMI 1.2 not the 1.3 version the ps3 carries, the difference being that 1.3 can carry HD audio and better colors while 1.2 can’t. The cell is awesome because everything is going multi-core, and I know it is going to take awhile for programmers to get used to it, but when they do, you will really start to see some amazing new stuff in games we have never seen before. The ps3 also gives you a lot more for you money than the 360 does. It has hd movie support, web browser, ability to increase the hard drive on your own, ability to load an os, bluetoothe, and built in wi-fi (which is important since more devices are using and incorporating it). By the time you add all the extras for the 360 (larger hard drive, wi-fi, hd movie support, xbox live membership) you are well over the admission price for the ps3. Hate to say it but I think the Wii is going to hit a brick wall, because there is only so much you can do with that controller. Look at the Nintendo DS, how many new and exciting ways is the touch screen being used since the release of its’ initial software line up. The answer is none, heck even most of there own games don’t use the thing that much. The lack of hardware is going to hurt it the most since that console can only handle so much at one time. I think the playstation eye shows more promise for new and better ways of interacting with games than the wii chuck has ever done. There is a probably a lot more I can say on these issues, but I will refrain for now. All I am saying is give the ps3 a chance. It also took some time as well for the 360, ps1, ps2, and most other systems to start getting some really good games. Furthermore, did the ps1 and ps2 leave such a bad taste in your mouth as to abandon all hope for Sony? No way, most of my favorite games are on those systems. I really do like all systems and I am trying to give the facts and not trying to sound like a complete fanboy. However, since the sony dmg control squad isn’t doing so hot, someone has to stick up for the underdog. Peace in the middle east, rain in spain.

A price cut?...Less than a year from launch?...Sounds like the dreamcast to me. $500 is still to much to be mass market. The last $500 dollar console that had got canned, even though it was the 20gig version it was still a ps3.

This was an expected and necessary price drop... but I really don't think it's going to give Sony the boost that they need. If they really wanted to get a huge boost in sales, the ideal move would be a $200 price drop on Black Friday. They would dominate the holiday season, and I bet you wouldn't even be able to find one until sometime early 2008. This $100 drop will be helpful, but I just don't think it will be enough. It is still more than every 360 package, with less titles available.

I just like games and, in my opinion, the 360 is doing that the best right now. Will that continue for years? I have no idea... but to tell me about all this extra shit it comes with that has nothing to do with playing games does very little to interest me.

The fact is, you can't take Internet comments at face value, nor can you apply them to the general marketplace. The average person isn't going to see tons of difference between the two PS3 models and, really, if one wasn't moving at $499 before it's not going to move terribly long at this price either.

Of course there's going to be a sales spike, but I'm not entirely sure what is making people think it'll be permanent. Launch was "crazy", yet two weeks later there were stacks of the thing at the store. What's the source of comparison anymore?

Because every early adopter would expect the price to drop eventually. Unless the console maker goes bankrupt and cease all production of console, thus making the prices either shoot up due to rarity/collectors, or fall drastically due to lack of interest.

Wow, Xbox, Gamecube, Nintendo DS, GBA, Genesis, and even SNES all received price cuts within a year of launch. And with exception to Gamecube and Xbox (once again, I fail to see how 20+ million sold is a failure), all of those were successful consoles.

Also, I don't see Microsoft dropping their price either. They're going into the holiday season with some pretty big guns so even as PS3 is priced within a stones through (Charge 'n Play kit) of the Elite, we still see Halo 3 bringing the fire. MS is in far too comfortable of a position to cut profits, especially after they extended the warranty again.

Sorry, but not accurate. GBA didn't get a price change until it's second year. The Genesis launched at $200 in NYC and LA, and then dropped $10 a month later. Hardly a price drop of magnificent proportions. I'm not sure when you're talking about the SNES price drop, unless you're referring to the difference in Japanese and US prices?

But in the case of the GBA, Genesis, SNES and even the GBA, they were market leaders reducing their price to stave off competition or fight a hotly contested war with equal market share. Even the DS was leading in sales when they did it, although it was not nearly a certainty that they were going to become the market leader at that point.

This certainly is a good step for Sony. Now they need to aggressively get some exclusives to convince people to buy the console. A lot is riding on Lair, Heavenly Sword and Uncharted to bring the fun, because Sony's current lineup is not doing the trick.
