Not only that, but Master Chief's name is John-117, his code name when he was taken to Reach. And you're forgetting that Solid Snake's real name is David, although he also uses Pliskin (maybe David Pliskin?).

Actually, the line from the Super Mario Brothers movie where Luigi gives his full name as "Luigi Mario" wasn't really meant to indicate Mario's name is "Mario Mario", but it was really designed to illustrate that Mario doesn't go by his first name (How else can they be called the Mario Brothers?), which creates a mysterious secret: We thought we knew Mario, but we don't even really know his first name!

Too bad no one seemed to get the inference, and instead somehow wound up thinking he had the same first and last name, which is just weird.

Actually, in the movie, Mario clearly states his name as Mario Mario, in addition to Luigi.

I know most of you are using the Mario Bros movie as a reference, but you must understand that even before that movie existed, Nintendo officially declared that their names were Mario Mario and Luigi Mario. If you need proof, email Nintendo, or look through old Nintendo Powers. I remember an old issue that cleared things up in the letters to Nintendo section.

And if you still don't believe it after all that... call Shiggy. I dare you.

I thought Mario's last name was Segali, since he was named after a plumber that took care of Miyamotos Department...

When NOA was fixing up the naming issues like Princess Toadstool Peach they made Mario and Luigi they're official names. JUST Mario and JUST Luigi. No longer Mario Mario and Luigi Mario.

hvnlysoldr:

Peach's whole name is Princess Peach Toadstool. There's King Bowser Koopa. Peach/Koopa were the Japanese names for the characters, so they've just combined the names, rather than doing away with any of them. And what would you call Mario and Luigi if they weren't in fact Mario Bros.? :P

@ Nushio 12

That guy was the landlord of the building Nintendo was using at the time, they made Mario in his likeness.

He wasn't Miyamoto's plumber, he was Minoru Arakawa's landlord. When they were founding Nintendo of America and localizing Miyamoto's Donkey Kong arcade boards, they needed to name this wacky Japanese "Jumpman" character 'cuz they didn't think it would be funny in America.
