Unreal Tournament 3 to ship with dozens of multiplayer maps
The August edition of the Official Xbox Magazine ships with its usual disc of goodies and this month it includes a mini-documentary of the future frag king, Unreal Tournament 3. We'd link the issue here, but their site is currently under construction. As BeyondUnreal reports, UT3 -- which is decidedly not for wimps -- will be shipping with "three to four dozen multiplayer maps." This is consistent with what they told CVG back in February. Judging from their work on Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004, we're willing to bet that a good chunk of these maps -- these "pain sanctuaries," if you will -- are remixed versions of UT classics. Our cup still runneth over as it's good to know that Epic isn't slacking off in a day and age where some folks think it's cool to ship with a map count in the single digits.

Quantity over Quality. There were like...10 good maps in UT2k4 and the rest were trash.
Todd H. @ Jul 5th 2007 1:50PM
I must say that I'm looking forward to this more than Halo 3.
Vince @ Jul 5th 2007 1:55PM
God dammit i want this game NOW!
quazi @ Jul 5th 2007 2:20PM
@1 yeah but some games have like 12 maps out of the box and have 4-5 good maps =/
still dont want UT.

Can't wait for some dust2 and the new office. Hopefully they fixed the aztec bottlenecks as well.

Unlike UT3... Halo 3 will stress quality over quantity on their maps.... judging by past UT maps and the Halo 3 beta... which will be drastically altered and play tested before it's release. Unless Epic runs a beta... it will be a dart shoot without user feedback.
Neebs @ Jul 5th 2007 3:20PM
The Truth - That is the most retarded thing I've ever heard. Console gamers have had like, 2-3 open betas ever and suddenly it's a requirement because Halo 3 did it. Games do not suck without an open beta.
Shawn D @ Jul 5th 2007 3:29PM
First off, UT is far and beyond anything Halo has ever done. This is a twitch shooter though, not a spray and pray like Halo, so I'm not sure many in the console space are going to appreciate UT for what it is.
I couldn't imagine not playing this on PC, as I'm really looking forward to the massive amount of custom maps and mods, not to mention the mouse and keyboard for controls. Anyone used to play the XMP mod for Unreal 2 and 2k4? One of the best multiplayer modes ever.

"suddenly it's a requirement because Halo 3 did it"
Umm. I don't believe I ever said that. But hours upon hours of play testing at Bungie along with an open beta doesn't hurt anything. Are you telling me that wouldn't be helpful gaining user feedback to get the most out of designing maps and tweaking gameplay elements to make a game fun??
@ Shawn D
"UT is far and beyond anything Halo has ever done"
That would be a matter of opinion and what kind of games you're into. Some people prefer the style and pacing of UT over Halo... so be it. Preference doesn't make something better. Halo still has a massive following and appears as though Bungie is painstakingly taking measures to make sure it sets the standard of online console gaming once again. Granted you can probably mod more and have more options with a computer... but the wider audience won't care. Some people like myself would rather pop in a game, play for a few hours, and log off again.
My arguement being, more maps does not always make it better. Quality over quantity.
Schnozberry @ Jul 5th 2007 4:18PM
More maps at release is a good thing. I'm tired of buying a game for 60 bucks and then getting raked over the coals for maps later on in the marketplace. The total cost to play games on Xbox Live keeps increasing. 50/year to play online, 60 dollars
per game, and then 10 bucks a pop for map packs. When do gamers get to stop the bleeding? Apparently Microsoft feels like we need to be flogged for something. What's next, charging us to fix our broken consoles?
Mark @ Jul 5th 2007 4:28PM
C'mon no need to hate on TF2's lack of maps. They've only had 10 years to work on it. :(
2ez @ Jul 5th 2007 6:44PM
Um. Who the hell is buying UT for consoles? Except for the casual gamers and newbs?
Jared @ Jul 5th 2007 7:00PM
#13 - Hi! I played UT2004 in CPL and did so at a level that you would possibly never comprehend.
You know what version of UT3 I'm buying? If you said consoles, you're right!
I mean, god forbid people decide they'd like to play video games for fun, right?
Megaqwerty @ Jul 5th 2007 7:33PM
Who cares? The thing could ship with no maps and people would still buy the thing in droves: the best modes and maps for UT have always been custom-made.
The quality over quantity is moot: is cartography an art or a science?
2ez @ Jul 5th 2007 7:57PM
Rofl what, Jared? You go from CPL to Consoles?
Shawn D @ Jul 6th 2007 12:15PM
@10 The Truth,
No doubt that it's my opinion, but for one to have a legit one, one must play both types of platforms, which I do.
There's no need to make it more complicated than it is. You said "Some people like myself would rather pop in a game, play for a few hours, and log off again." Well, that's exactly what you do with the PC version, but instead of "pop"ing in the game, I just double click on an icon....whoooa the complexity is a bit too much I know.
Custom maps(Notoriously the best) are downloaded automatically when you enter a server where you don't have the map installed, along with any other files you need. Very simple, in fact, it's easier than going back to the dashboard and selecting "download now" under the option for 800 MS points.
Mike @ Jul 6th 2007 4:39PM
UT3 would be the only game I would consider buying BOTH versions.. PC and 360.

#2 writes 'I must say that I'm looking forward to this more than Halo 3.'
Do you even own an XBOX 360???
I own a 360 and PC and played ALL UT games and personally haven't really cared for any of them! I'm no big HALO fan either BUT imho HALO is a better game.
The highest reviewed UT game received a 9.5 @ Gamespot.
The highest HALO received a 9.7 @ Gamespot.
The reviews aren't too far apart BUT sales on the other hand tell which franchise is much MORE popular!
http://www.midway.com/us/Game_UnrealAnthology.html
Since its debut in 1998, the Unreal franchise has sold more than seven million units worldwide.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best_selling_computer_and_video_games
Xbox games that have sold more than one million copies as of March 2006.
Halo 2 (8 million)
Halo: Combat Evolved (5 million)
SO by these numbers I would have to say MOST people prefer HALO over UT. That's why I ask if you even own a 360. Either your one of the few who sincerely prefer it over HALO or your just a sony fan hiding and bashing HALO...

Uh fellas they are releasing a beta to fine tune the maps and everything, in UT3, that has been the plan all along. I am sure it will be fine on a console, if you want to limit the game. Also anybody who has played it before, on a PC, and now wants it for a console wants it because they got owned by real players online on the PC.
