"Enhanced warranty." Cool, I'm glad they're addressing this. We're bound to hear from people that will never believe this was ever a problem, because their 360 never died, but I think this validates the calls for quality control.

It probably avoids a massive class-action situation by declaring "mea culpa" and attempting to handle it.

This'll certainly hurt their long-term projections, especially if they don't gain marketshare this gen over what they did last time

They were just starting to break even for their hardware product, then it hits 'em with a $1 billion price tag. Wouldn't that be about $7 billion that they've lost by now?

In a completely honest, unbiased way, i wonder how long MS will continue to tolerate this division's consuming $$?

I don't know what people want from Microsoft with regard to this issue. What could they possibly do to placate you--other than making a trip to your house to personally kiss your ass and beg for your forgiveness? Three years is pretty good for a warranty program--and it sounds to me as though they believe the reworks are going to fix the problem. I can understand being upset about having to ship your console out. I imagine I'd go through some severe withdrawals. But I think they're doing the right thing and I think we would all be better served saving our anger for things they haven't yet done anything about such as:

1) No browser
2) XBL could be free
3) They could allow better streaming abilities ala XBMC
etc.

I'm getting mine replaced under waranty this weekend. It's the optical block. They extended the warranty on the 50" and 60" SXRD XBRs (1st gen) until 2008. I don't know wbout the 55 (non-XBR)

Fatima, are you kidding? iPods are junk (batteries, hard drives) and Mac OS was junk until OSX (aka: went UNIX). PS2 DRE's resulted in a large class-action lawsuit since it took them 13 revisions of the console to fix the problem. The only company that has taken care of its customers the entire time is Nintendo. And their hardware isn't problem-free either.

Quantity has become much more important than quality, as extra quantity drives down price leaving consumers thinking they are getting a better deal. Can't complain about it really; it should be expected by now.

Glad you found a TV you like. Personally, I can't stand DLPs (had one). I normaly upgrade one of my TVs every year so my XBR will be out the door in a few months anyhow (for the new 70" XBR - god that thing is beautiful). Anyways, most of my gaming is done on my "regular" 60" SXRD so...

The Mitsu DLP has the best color and picture of them all in my opinion. Even when not using "1080p" LOL

OK, kiddo. You need to learn a little bit about how corporate America works. Obviously, they knew something was screwy a long time ago. But it'd be absolutely stupid from a business sense to come out and say, "Xbox 360 is screwed up and failing, but we don't know why yet! Stay tuned while we figure it out!" So once the reports about the console failures started really trickling in (and it didn't really start picking up steam until maybe 6-9 months after launch), they then had to confirm there was a problem, figure out what was causing it, figure out how to fix it, then decide how to tell people before they could come out and make a statement that there was a problem and that they were addressing it.

DLPs are fine ... IF, they use a 3 chip design. Most only have 1 and a freakin colour wheel to get RGB, which is the source of a lot of problems. So, its totally possible that not all dlps are ass.. but, most are. DLPs are like the Celerons of the Intel CPU world... they suck unless you're poor.

The LCoS (SXRD and IDLA) tend to only be found in high end units and ONLY in 3 chip configurations.

Nice. "Multiple" design flaws by admission. I hope there's no more skepticism about this.

Well, at least they're being honest on that point, though they're still dodging on other points. From their answer on the number of units they expect to get back for repair, it sure sounds like they're expecting close to 100%.

I would be curious to see the differences between a unit produced 6 months ago and a unit produced 6 months from now to see what these "multiple" design issues were that they've now supposedly fixed.

You'd think MS was trying to reinvent the wheel here. How could they so badly screw up the design of this system? It's not like nobody has ever made a game console before. $1.15 billion is a huge number for repairs when you're only talking 11.6 million systems out there (and from their comments to the effect that they've fixed the problems, those should be the only systems affected).

I'm guessing the failure rate is about 30%. The cost of repairing the units are $139. Microsoft is going to spend 1 billion+ over the next 3 years on these repairs. Hypothetically saying they sell 6 million a year, for a total of 18m in the 3 year life span. 7.2m repairs. Sure, it sounds like alot, but for MS to make a move like this, the number has to be astronomically high. We're talking about a ridiculous failure rate, and even MS won't say the %. Of course, I'm not a mathematician either, so feel free to flame me.

I also think that when MS says they shipped/sold? 11.6 units is misleading because of the failure rates. How many ppl actually bought another one? I'm sure it's not in the millions but probably a significant number.

You're thinking of older generation DLPs, Von. I suggest you go to avsforum and see what some of the experts are saying. Currently, DLPs offer the best price-performance option for HDTV. The color wheels move so fast that only Superman and people with deep-seated psycho-sexual problems see rainbows.

All manufacturers have their fair share of problems but the problems plaguing the 360 is way higher than industrial norms but to place Sony is an example for good quality is laughable as they have many goof-ups including the potentially dangerous exploding notebook batteries.

All these big companies pump out garbage these days. This is the generation disposable electronics isn't it?

Anyway, it's nice to see MS stepping up and trying to avoid a class action lawsuit and total recall like this. Now they just need to stop taking advantage of the lowbrow gamers out there with Live and the Marketplace. Everyone needs to stop paying for Peer to peer gaming, gamer pics, wallpapers, and map packs that are free elsewhere. I see nothing wrong with charging for expansion packs, arcade games and an online service that would atleast give gamers the option to rent dedicated servers for themselves and friends. However, charging for things that have been free everywhere else for over a decade is a freaking joke,scam,rip-off, etc. and only a fool would support such things.

I disagree with the part in the interview where Robbie Bache says that these problems didn't start to show up often til the first year. I bought on launch day. A week later i had the ring o death. Fortunately Microsoft sent a replacement within two weeks with a complimentary hard drive for my core system. Unfortunately that system also happened to show me its ring o death two weeks later. They replaced it again and i've been on that one ever since. So I guess 3rd times the charm. I do like the 360 though. pbbbt.

Yeah, I'm confident.

Confident that I have a 1 in 3 chance of picking up a bad system when I go to a retail outlet that itself has a bad unit on display.

Yeah, that's confidence for you!

Whoever designed the 360 is a complete dumbass. From what I understand the CPU is under the DVD drive? Is this correct? And there is no CPU fan? Just heatsinks? The only fan is on the rear side of the machine? Which pulls air through the case and out the back?

JOYSTIQ, can you guys do an expose on the innards of the 360? How is it cooled? Can you talk to the repair shops and find out what the main problem is?

Micro$oft, congratulations, you birthed another TURD. To go on the pile of other TURDS you've produced. What would you guys be without OFFICE and Windows? I know, broke!

Well, from my experience, Apple has issues too. Check out apple forums talking about problems with MacBooks when they first launched and Apple was notoriously quiet about this. I've had to send my MacBook in once already but I'm still on my first Xbox 360 (bought at launch). No company is perfect but some are better at hiding their imperfections than others.

@SuicideNinja

"PS2 DRE's resulted in a large class-action lawsuit since it took them 13 revisions of the console to fix the problem."

You know... research isn't exactly hard to do. Revisions of hardware are actually not all that uncommon and most of the time, it's due to cheaper parts and antipiracy protection. Nintendo Wii, for example, is already on their third hardware revision.

But you are partially correct. The third hardware revision was to combat the DRE issue directly. First revision was for Japan only and had no hard drive bay (Japan had debuted the hard drive as an extrenal device). The second revision was of course the hardware revision for US and Europe launchs. However, DREs became prevelant and the next revision that combated the problems directly (SCPH-30001R... first available as a GT3 bundle). From then on, majority of the revisions were to add features and fight piracy. However, the Hex Nut still remained an issue.

As for the class action lawsuit... well, let's just put it this way... what company do you trust? The one that let the lawsuit go through and dealt with the consequences or the one that has silently paid off the originaters of four seperate class action lawsuits so far? Because one is Sony, the other is Microsoft. But it's okay, you shouldn't focus on that. You should be focusing on how friendly the person you talked to on the phone was as they sent you another coffin.

Please read the WHOLE article.. He was claiming that the 360 had problems the first year of production. But the seriousness of it wasnt to an extent where it was mainstream attention. The problem with the 360 AFTER 1 year Is something DIFFERENT then the problems the first year. This was brought to their attention and there doing an extention to 3 year warranty. Remember.. there was only 1...

I hate it when people just read parts of an article and comment about it. Its like walking into a conversation thats been goin on for 5 minutes and only hearing one sentence and you make your opinion about it. Get a life..

Few things however:

1. How does this affect the extended warranty others purchased. Do I get another three years of extended warranty just for the red light issue or does it run concurrently?

2. Why oh why isn't someone working witwh the warranty department so they can get a phone! I have been trying to get my refund actually sent (it was received) for 6 months now and no one can get this done!)

This is disingenuous at best. I'm assuming that at some point, Microsoft has let a lawsuit go to trial. I'm also assuming that at some point, Sony has settled out of court on something. They're both money-grubbing corporations. Let's just leave it at that.
