Xbox 360's Virtua Fighter 5 to feature online play

Sega of America and Sega Europe have announced that the upcoming Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5 will indeed allow you to transfer your violent impulses to a complete stranger on the internet. Scheduled for a release in Autumn 2007, the game will feature an online two-player versus mode via Xbox Live, leader boards and several other enhancements over February's PlayStation 3 edition. That's what we jokingly refer to as a "technical knockout."
If you don't usually extract satisfaction from pugilistic polygons, you might be wondering why Virtua Fighter 5 is held in such high regard. Well, the reason is... uh, there are lot of reasons! Very good ones, in fact. "For a lot of very good reasons, Virtua Fighter 5 is regarded as the deepest and most revered fighting game available on next generation consoles", says Gary Knight, the European marketing director for Sega Europe. "Bringing Virtua Fighter 5 to the Xbox 360 will not only capture an entirely new audience, but will allow gamers to show their Virtua Fighter skills online against friends and foes."

Dear Sony fanboys,
I told you so.
Yours Truly,
Jake
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 6th 2007 12:58PM
This is why even a price cut wont help the PS3... there a no value on PS3 games.
Every multiplatform game is better on the 360... better framerate, better graphics, better online, rumble, achievements...
ZenGaijin @ Jul 6th 2007 1:01PM
And I still won't buy it, because I suck horribly at VF. This is kinda bullshit to the Sony people that bought the game earlier maybe they will get a patch or something.
Spartacus @ Jul 6th 2007 12:57PM
Ohhhh snap!
Yet another case proving the 360 is the better game console while the PS3 is a better home entertainment and media device (ie it plays HD movies out of the box).
Dannagar @ Jul 6th 2007 12:58PM
Although I do own both PS3 and Xbox 360. I only use my PS3 and a DVD player. As a 360 owner all I can say are good times.
Dan @ Jul 6th 2007 1:06PM
OWNED!!
Damn, PS3 just cant catch a break...anyone else wanna see wa happens to it at E3?
GJM @ Jul 6th 2007 12:59PM
This is a crazy. The *port* from the more powerful machine to the lesser machine features better graphics AND something much more tangible: online play. Unreal. Thankfully I have both consoles, and thankfully I love me some BluRay movies...
Curmeo @ Jul 6th 2007 1:00PM
as a PS3 fanboy/owner, im pissed! wtf sega/sony? i thought u said virtua figher 5 wasnt technically feasible online due to the nature of the gameplay? sega better release an update that adds online play to the PS3 version asap.
rfom @ Jul 6th 2007 1:04PM
Dear xbots,
Thats what happens when you have to wait six months for a game, despite being the first console to market
And you still need to pay for the online..USD200 over 4 years. Thats wipes out the price difference of PS3 versus 360, and you still dont have BR, wifi, 60 GB hard disc, 1000+ BC
Please feel free to comment, while your 360 is in the repair shop
"Microsoft said Thursday that it will take a $1 billion charge as it extends the warranty on the Xbox 360, after an investigation showed the game console can be prone to hardware failures. "
Konny @ Jul 6th 2007 1:06PM
Keep your panties on xBots, has their EVER been an arcade fighter that has performed well online? ie. does it play online, exactly the same as it does offline?
Methinks, not.
Shagittarius @ Jul 6th 2007 1:04PM
I'm sure PS3 will get online via DLC...besides the proprietary LIV code im sure it interchangable.
Besides this was announced back in February that the 360 version would have online play so besides trying to start a flame war it seems pointless to mention as if its new news again.
Peaefuloutrage @ Jul 6th 2007 1:08PM
While the more hardcore fans of VF will agree that online matches would be horrid, I think that this is more for the casual gamers and parents who look at the back of the boxes and compare bullet points. If you are hardcore, you can just ignore the online feature and play local matches, while everyone else that has it and wanted it can play with it, lag and all.
FancyPants @ Jul 6th 2007 1:08PM
LOL this is almost as bas as the time Capcom announced the PS2 veison of RE4 before it came out on the cube
Joshua @ Jul 6th 2007 1:09PM
Yes it is another option that goes against the PS3. What about the maps in RS:Vegas? It works both ways from time to time.
This issue isn't going to last much longer as the developers learn the ways of all the systems. Once releases are all at the same time we can all expect this type of thing to stop.
Yes as a 360 owner I'm pleased to see we get the goods. As a 360 owner I'm happy about the exclusives we are getting. That being said...I know the good times aren't going to last forever and that there will always be titles I can't play on the 360 that I wish I could.
quazi @ Jul 6th 2007 1:10PM
wow!
see this is because sony didnt have a full online plan.sega sees ms will cover bandwitdh cost for games played online.they didnt want to have to build the network stuff on ps3 from scratch.
lazy devs but at same time they save cost and time.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 6th 2007 1:11PM
@FancyPants
But the diference is that the Cube version of RE4 is a lot better than the PS2 version, and the Wii version is even a lot more better.
Joshua @ Jul 6th 2007 1:10PM
I'm more interested to see what happens to the 360 and Wii at E3.
Ugh, off topic.
Joshua @ Jul 6th 2007 1:11PM
Peaefuloutrage..you might be correct that it will be terrible but to think that many parents compair bulletpoints on the back of the boxes...
I mean...come on! Let's face the facts that parents buy the games their kids tell them to. The only factor is the little white box with a black letter on the front. And sadly is that even a factor...
Blazur @ Jul 6th 2007 1:13PM
I should've bought a 360. Anybody want my Wii?
rfom @ Jul 6th 2007 1:16PM
Though I must say will be interesing to hear sega explain why no online for PS3 - after all they claimed online is not possible due to lag, I guess its ok to lie if it suits M$ (3% defect rate anyone?).
My guess is that when you launch a version with more CONTENT for a second console (Oblivion on PS3 for instance) its easy to drop a download for the earlier version (Oblivion 360)
However, if you add MULIPLAYER, you cant update the earlier version - which is what happened to Motorstorm in Japan, I beleive the poor guys still dont have multiplayer.
quazi @ Jul 6th 2007 1:14PM
@12
i call bs! if your hardcore you want to able to play against everyone not just those ppl close enough to you to come over and play.
the lag could maybe be an issue but has anyone played virtua tennis online with 360?thats a very fast paced game and they deal with lag BEAUTIFULLY.its damn near non existent.
Milkshake @ Jul 6th 2007 1:15PM
Thank you Sega, thank you so much, you just signed me up to buy this game. I dont care about the hardcore fans of the series who say that you cant play with a nano second of lag, I will enjoy this game with my friends on xbox live cant wait awesome.
Sony you just got owned again!!!!

By the time developers learn to "unleash" the "power" of the PS3, the next generation of consoles will be out.
konajinx @ Jul 6th 2007 1:16PM
rfom:
It's Sony trolls like yourself who are can never come up with any new arguments in favor of the PS3. Jesus, everyone's heard the "price difference" between Sony and MS when it comes to adding Live, other peripherals, etc. a million times already. Get some new arguments. Do you ever hear us complaining about having to pay for Live? Oh man...200 bucks over FOUR YEARS? Oh no! And we get games WE CAN PLAY on our system that are BETTER than the PS3? God, we're in trouble now!
I love it. I actually saw some idiot on the PS3 message boards do this tired argument and had a picture of all the stuff you "had" to get for the 360 to make it more than the PS3, and it had Live listed as 75 bucks. You're a funny, sad sorta group, PS3 bots. But hey, I guess living in denial while constantly waiting for something/anything to come out for your system is the way it goes these days. Enjoy continuing to wait to make sure that so much better 600 dollars was worth it. Chicken Little on Blu-Ray, anyone?
SoulBlade @ Jul 6th 2007 1:17PM
rfom: hahahaha - that is awesome
i agree, its cool to have online, but you're going to have lag, and your experience won't be as nice as playing local.
i wouldn't be surprised if ps3 gets a patch for it, but if it doesn't, oh well. no big loss.

i have had two xbox 360's. the first one was from launch. i played it to death, by all rights it should have died. i sold it to my friend a coulpe months back. it is still kicking and has no problems. when i sold it i bought an elite. not one freeze, not one hiccup, nothing but good times. i've been playing great games for almost two years on the 360. with developers always canceling titles, giving them bare bones features, and games being generally less wow-ing than the 360 it will be sometime until i think about a ps3. besides, you never know, once there is a game out worth putting considerable time into the ps3 just might break, we won't know until they are turned on longer than it takes to play a movie.
Jouten @ Jul 6th 2007 1:22PM
And yet again, this proves my point.
The PS3 sux big hairy ones...
mccomber @ Jul 6th 2007 1:22PM
When it was just better aliasing and fog effects, it was a total "who cares". This is definitely a big difference, and hopefully it plays well online. Sucks for the ps3 (again), maybe we will get online added at some point, but I'm definitely not holding my breath. Sega doesn't seem to think PS3 owners want to play online, considering they did the same thing with Virtua Tennis 3.
Hopefully Sony is getting some code to developers this month for Home like they said they would...

Rubix42 @ Jul 6th 2007 1:25PM
Solid. I love that people are already bashing the lag. Look at DoA4, still played online today how long after the release? Mmmkay, thanks for playing.
Yes, lag is rough, and you cannot truly compete when you are losing a 9 frame jab compared to your opponents 15 frame strike, but it is still awesome and you sometimes learn new stuff that makes you go hrrmmmm. . .
Dave @ Jul 6th 2007 1:25PM
Jouten has a point.
Dave @ Jul 6th 2007 1:27PM
How big a problem is lag really? Are you guys on broadband or are you using a 2400 baud dial-up modem? It's not a MMORPG. There aren't going to be hundreds of people on the screen at once. Get a grip.
Chan @ Jul 6th 2007 1:30PM

Mark @ Jul 6th 2007 1:31PM
I'm bummed out that Sega has decided to implement online play into the 360 and not the PS3. However, I'm not convinced that Xbox Live is the better online service. I own both, PS3 and Xbox 360, and have tried both online. DOA 4 is terribly laggy on Xbox Live, along with Fight Night Round 3. The PS3 isn't much better, but with games like Resistance, it runs great.
What I'm saying is, don't be too happy about it until you try the game online.
Project @ Jul 6th 2007 1:33PM
At the end of the day who cares? It's not like Virtua Fighter is a system seller anyways. Really, is anybody going to drop $480(360) or $600(PS3) on a system for this game? Online or off line the average person really just doesn't care.
Babel @ Jul 6th 2007 1:42PM
If I was in to fighting games, I'd probably be pleased. But I'm not, so I'm not really bothered.
And yes, that is the sum total of my contribution to this thread.
Diskoboy @ Jul 6th 2007 1:33PM
rfom - your comment is ,without a doubt, the funniest comment I've ever read on my numerous visits to this this site.
You honestly sound desperate.
Oh, and I'll comment while I'm looking at my launch 360, that hasn't had one single problem, ever, but the 8 different PS2's (6 old design, 2 slim) I've gone through because Sony doesn't know how to design a laser diode that actually works, or crap out after 3 days.... Oh, and I'd gladly pay the $200 bucks for 4 years of XBL gold. Infact, XBL blows away Sonys free online service, hands down. That is an undeniable fact.
quazi @ Jul 6th 2007 1:39PM
@38 you right it dont matter to the non fans.BUT like the recent ,obvious ass, study shows those who are heavy gamers spend alot more money than anyone else on games.they have multi consoles and im willing to bet more than one of them will not buy the ps3 version of game just to have online on 360 version.myself included.
Kinsella @ Jul 6th 2007 1:40PM
Awww...cheer up Sony fanbois! While this is a huge announcement for the Xbox360, heyyyyy, you guys just got a $60 port of a 4 year old Xbox game!! Cmon guys, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is totally worth the $600 that the early adopters shelled out.
Jonathan Tran @ Jul 6th 2007 1:41PM
-Rumble is a last gen feature
-Online is a last gen feature
-Motion control is a gimmick
-Nobody would pay for online service
-Wii60 can't be used as a George Forman grill
-HYPE DOESNT START TILL SONY SAYS "OK HYPE NOW"
where is Jack or Longshot when you need them to spew out this stuff?
In all seriousness I think 360 is the best console in concept except for the whole red ring thing. I think Wii will eventually "win" but 360 will be fondly cherished in memory forever, kinda like the N64. Meanwhile the PS3 will go the way of the CD-i, 3DO, CDX and Jaguar (+JCD).
Dman4Life @ Jul 6th 2007 1:42PM
Well for everyone that thinks the ps3 version will have online, I wouldn't hold my breath for it. An online add-on to a game that doesn't have the framework for it would require entirely new code to be written for it, aswell as beta testing, and then distribution. That would be a huge download to say the least. As for a laggy experience and no fighting games working right on 360 online, I have to point to DOA 4, Fight Night 3, and Def Jam:Icon. I've played all 3 games with little to no lag in hundreads of bouts. Not to mention the backwards compatible Street Fighter Anniversary, Kof 02/03, Kof Neo-Wave, and Guilty Gear Issuka[they put in the wrong one! we need XX# Reload dammit!] all without lag. And lastly on the issue of ps3 vs. 360 multiplatform games & framerate. Alot of the reason that developers are having trouble with the ps3 multiplatform games, is that it's harder porting from xbox 360[which is what the majority of games are being written for first] to ps3 due to the totally different architecture. Most developers do not have the time nor the monitariy resources to develop the game for 360, then turn around and build the same game from the ground up for the ps3[which is what is required in alot of cases]. So alot of times you'll see decreased framerate, or worse lighting because while it is possible to do the same things on the ps3, it's just alot more difficult because developing for the 360 is similar to developing for a multicore PC, where as developing for the ps3 is like the equivilant of putting a game on a supercomputer. It can be done, it's just not easy and it's very time consuming.
DaiMac79 @ Jul 6th 2007 1:43PM
"For a lot of very good reasons, Virtua Fighter 5 is regarded as the deepest and most revered fighting game available on next generation consoles"
That says it all right there. There are no good fighting games on next-gen consoles. Its quite sad that I would rather go back and play any number of Pre-Playmore SNK fighting games than pick up this game for my 360. Having not played a VF game since 3 in the arcade, I came over to my friend's house and played 5 on his PS3 a couple of months ago, and proceeded to own him and his other friends until he threw his sixaxis down in disgust. And I'm not even good compared to a real fighting game master, so there ya go. If I want 3D button mashing fighting, I'll go get SoulCalibur IV when it comes out, at least it has weapons and IVY's uncontrollable bust to entertain me after I get bored with the fighting itself.
Matt B @ Jul 6th 2007 1:43PM

As of right now, there are 5 stories on the front page of anti-Sony propaganda. Keep it up, the frenzy is starting to make the 360 fanboys frothy mouthed .
quazi @ Jul 6th 2007 1:44PM

i really doubt ps3 will die like CD-i, 3DO, CDX and Jaguar (+JCD)..hell ps3 already has more games and sale than all those combined XD. but i dont think ps3 will come third when xbox 1080,ps4 and wiiwii come out.
Mark @ Jul 6th 2007 1:45PM
This will be my last post on Joystiq. These comments are killing brain cells.
In regards to the 360 and PS3 online service. I'm happy with Sony's service for 2 reasons. First, it's a big improvement over the PS2 service. In addition to online play, it offers original game downloads, demos, PS1 titles. PSonline models itself after Xbox Live Gold. Second reason, it's FREE. For me, the benefits of PSonline outweighs Xbox Live. Yeah, I paid 500-600 for the PS3 but online is free and it works pretty well.
I don't think it's fine to ignore the problems with DOA4 online. The game is laggy online. If these problems can't be solved, then why bother?
