I want to know if this affects the mobile version's site, too...

Any chance of going back, the previous design was much tighter then this one. The old one was easier to read and use. Did anyone think of doing a usability study first?

also,
unless you want a lot of people just reacting to headlines (is that a goal?). the comment link (and no. of current comments) should be prominently repeated at the *end* of the Joystiq post where it was before.
the tiny little comment bubble by the diggs gets lost with the function icons, and doesn't exactly provoke a furious comment AFTER reading the post.

Love the redesign!

As a designer myself, I like the design. However, new looks aren't the reason a website should change. I'm having trouble with the usability.
I don't like where the "xx Comments" link is located. It's not where most people would look for a comments link. Also, the replies. One of the distinct beauties of the old system was how people would respond to each other using "[#number:] [Name] [message]".
It was much easier to check for new comments and, unlike this system, it allowed replies to replies.
Mix the new stuff from this design with the brilliant usability of the previous system, and you'll have a hit. Until then, not so much.

looks pretty good, but how about fixed menus for the title bar and the side bar? It doesn't make much sense to have shortcuts, but having to scroll all the way back up to use them

I dunno... It'll definately take time.

Ugh. I loved the old Joystiq. Ever since I stumbled upon this site, I liked how it was so simple and... bland. I LIKED the blandness. This web 2.0 shit has got to go, and Pong NEEDS to be brought back. Why, Joystiq, why? :{

As a person who is visually impaired could I please ask for the graying out of comments to stop right now.Grey on white is an absolute sod to read and it just gets worse as the comments are voted down. Black on gray is brilliant as it is both clear and reduces glare.
I love the idea of being able to vote on a comment,(although to be fair I will still read them all,) but the graying out has made it so difficult for me I just can't read the comments.
Oh and can we have a larger comments button with the number of comments posted next to it?

I wish I could have replied to your reply, buuut....
Tag clouds are useless little things that do nothing but are included in every single goddamn website that's being redesigned right now because it's "trendy." As far as I'm concerned, they add no value to a site whatsoever and are thus a waste of space that could be better used. I know of nobody who actually uses a tag cloud for any purpose.

Oh...well ...at least the content is great :-)

Hey, Christopher. Dunno if you are still paying attention to this thread and dunno if anyone else has suggested it already, but the "fading text" based on comments rating is somewhat distracting. For one, it appears that the comments start at a 2 heart rating, which by default, is faded grey-ish text. So what ends up happening is that it leaves us to read slightly faded text for the entire comments page. Everytime I actually run into a fully black text comment, it's like music to my eyes. Maybe for comments that are 1.5 to 2.5 hearts, it can be fully black and then comments that are 3 hearts, the background can change to yellow or something? Also, the comments that get reduced to 1 or 1.5 hearts becomes VERY light-colored. Sometimes, people may want to read these anyhow. Rather than forcing us to strain our eyes to read it, perhaps make it so that if we highlight the text, it becomes more clear or give us a button we can click to "clearify" the text, whatever clearify means. ^_^
That's all. Thanks for listening.

Ummm... ewwww is right.
Way too busy, we now have another Gamespot or IGN.
I love Joystiq, but I guess you guys are growing up and heading into the big leagues and AOL will extract every bit of advertising dollar it can get from the site and this cluttered, garish design is necessary to that end.
