Disney movies available on Xbox 360 in HD
Disney may be a Blu-ray exclusive supporter, but that doesn't mean Xbox 360 owners won't be able to enjoy Disney movies in high definition. Microsoft has just announced that Disney will be providing downloadable HD movies to the Xbox Live Marketplace. Even more surprising ... it'll happen tonight. Get your hard drives ready to download!

whoop de do. Disney supports blu-ray and blu-ray is disc based not some up in the air downloading content program.

@lp47. That was a really dumb comment you just made. Don't you realize that the xbox live downloadable market place is a testing of the water if you will for PERMANENT downloadable content in the future. Eventually it will become similar to itunes movie downloads now. M$ is just using this to market to movie studios the benefits and public interest in downloadable movies versus content on a disc. And no this may not lead to downloadable content replacing discs but there is a definite chance this could lead to downloads that will not be rentals in the near future. M$ just has to work out the copyright issues and provide movie studios proof that there is a market for it and that it won't lead to illegal downloading. So yeah your blu-ray exclusives are looking less and less like exclusives even more. Same goes for hd dvd. Downloadable content is definitely the future and it's coming sooner rather than later. First itunes, then amazon.com, and now it looks like M$ wants a piece of the action.

MS is certainly showing that they are more interested in supporting DLC than the HDDVD format, that's for sure. This is a huge coupe for Live though, and they deserve some praise for putting it together. Sony's pushing optical forward, and MS is pushing downloadable. Is this the approach MS is taking to get into the mainstream?

1. These are rental only vs. owning
2. 720p
Wes @ Jul 11th 2007 2:28AM
Are you sure they are renting only? I'm not so sure which it is as I live in Canada. I'm not so excited about the Disney news but am very happy about the downloadable content coming to Europe and Canada by next of 2007. I think that's what they said in the conference?
To me, that's great news. An affordable, easy, simple way of getting hd movies with a few advantages. No worries about driving to a video store, availibilty of the video once I get there (we've all had that happen), hd without an additional the entry price of $200 or $500ish though admitedly without 1080p and no worries about late charges for returning it a day late (we all know about this one too don't we?)
Not to mention, without the need to create dvd/hd-dvds, press them, manufacturer them, ship them to retails, possibly less to lisence them?, etc I think dlc content could possibly come quicker than movies come to rental stores possibly? Dunno though. I hope so :)

I don't think Disney has released any of it's titles on Blu-Ray yet. So this is the first High Def content available from Disney. That is big news. It totally undermines PS3 fanboys boasting in Blu-Ray being included in the PS3.
Microsoft has shown that you don't need Blu-Ray or HD-DVD to enjoy HD content. And as of right now...It is 360 owners who are enjoying Disney movies and not PS3 users.

Rather than make a list, I'll just say—wrong. I don't think a lot of their traditional animation work is on bluray yet, but there are several live action titles, and a few CG ones as well. Oh yeah, and... Pirates. Didn't see those on the MS list.

"don't think Disney has released any of it's titles on Blu-Ray yet. So this is the first High Def content available from Disney."
(well said mccomber)
What the **** are you talking about? Pirates of the Caribbean ring a freaking bell? Both the first and second movie with exclusive HD content and top tier 1080p video? (Which I seriously doubt these downloadable movies will come close too) What the hell is this misconception going around that Disney hasn't released many if any blu-ray movies. They've released tons. BTW, here's a link just in case you'd want one:

I have both pirate movies and a ton of shit from buena vista (yep thats disney)...
what were you saying?????

"I don't think Disney has released any of it's titles on Blu-Ray yet."
What are you talking about? I own the first two Pirates movies and The Wild, all on Blu-ray. Open Season, Ice Age, and a few other Disney/Pixar movies are also already available...
dpad @ Jul 11th 2007 9:47AM
@SomeBlondeGuy
Too bad none of those animation movies are Disney or Pixar.
Try again.

Fine, well, and good. As a 360Elite owner, I can celebrate, however, until I'm able to put those movies on a disc and put them in my collection... woopdidoo.
baby sea tuna @ Jul 11th 2007 10:02AM
I feel that "woopdidoo" as far as Disney Movies go...I mean, I don't plan on watching Kronk's New Groove any time soon...but as an owner of several hundred DVDs that I'll probably never watch again, I do appreciate any movement away from disc-based-media. Personal preferences aside, Disney is an undeniably heavy hitter and this can only be good news for LIVE customers.
Now, Buena Vista TV, get your shit together and start putting up some HD eps of Lost!
camaj @ Jul 11th 2007 8:26AM
Disney started releasing BD's back in Sept 06 with titles such as Dinosaur and Jay and Silent Bob strike back. They've continued to release a steady stream of titles for the format since then, most notably the Pirate movies.
I think some people forget the studios Disney owns: Disney, Buena Vista, Hollywood Pictures, Miramax and Dimension films.
Thomas @ Jul 11th 2007 11:49AM
Act now, before these wonderful movies are sealed in the Disney Vault... FOREVER!
;)
