A Dragon Quest fan who goes by the handle XB-LIM has done what every retro RPG gamer would have killed for two decades ago: mapped the first four Dragon Quest games in the style of Google Maps. They're zoomable, they're scrollable, and one of them even has bubble annotations (in Japanese). Kind of takes the fun out of wandering around and exploring, which is half the entertainment value of classic RPGs. Fighting hundreds of random battles to gain a few levels so you can actually make the trek to the first town is the other half.

…man, you know you're a nerd who's played these games too often when you can name every place on those maps. o.o
With the exception of Dragon Warrior II (which I don't own, and haven't ever really played), I know the name of every single town and stuff without even having to look at any names. By the way, speaking of which — that's Samanao castle from III in the picture above. :)

You meant Google Maps GUI style.
Have to agree with the poster above. This new layout gives me a headache.

Very cool.
Now, I'd like to see this done for some other games, too. Maybe Pokémon (Oh, sorry, I mean... POKEMANS)?

I still have all four of these games for NES, and they still work with their original batteries.
I'll lose my save games and be forced to replace the batteries eventually.
Then I'll have to replay through them all again :)
I should just do it now and get it over with.

I owned the first game, and I'm pretty sure was called Dragon Warrior, not Dragon Quest.

My brother actually made a complete map of Dragon Warrior (Quest) 2 on graph paper. It covered one of our walls. It was very useful when I started playing the game... until our cat pissed on it.
Good times.
