So what's Sony going to say if this game goes multi and sells better on the 360 (which is highly likely)?

"It's a 10 year plan with the PS3". Stop me if you've heard that one lately :) That gem came out early in 2007 and is now the mantra for all talking heads. Isn't it great? If you're getting your ass beat, say it's not a race and we'll get there by golly... HA!

I love how they say "other consoles" with an 's.' No disrespect to the Wii at all, but it is fairly obvious that if this game moved to another console it would only be the Xbox 360.

If the Wii were to get MGS it would be a game specifically designed for it.

Ah, after reading Joystiq for a year, I am compelled to enter my first post.

First off, I work for Gamestop. ::dodges tomatoes and sharp instruments:: I have 14 stores in the Houston Metro market. My business, which I love, is selling video games and video game systems. And yes, I happily work for a competitive group that pushes an aggressive sales culture in reservations and subscriptions. Why? Cause I love the business and the primary way to grow it more is by building a financial commitment into the products. Specialty--not big box retailers--provide an exclusive atmosphere, clientèle, and product that Best Buy, Circuit City, and Target will never match. If your family's livelihood was your business, you'd do it too. I know we're not cheap. And I know not all of our employees are great. But we do have some values, and I do have some very passionate and talented personnel.

For a child of the comic book store era of the late 80's early 90's, it is a dream business. You want to find collectible games, or go up to a store and learn about a hidden treasure? My stores are your best bet. My employees aren't perfect, but I believe in them. And yes, it is a business, and an expensive one at that, and my sincere appreciation goes out to any of you who have ever reserved a game or bought Game Informer. You make our industry stronger. I know I have set myself up for being set on fire and burned repeatedly by what I prefaced here.

Ok--that out of the way--I will answer honestly to what I can on Sony--and I will tell you, the PS3 has been an abject failure so far. It frustrates me to no end. I possess no bias. I have owned every prior console game system since the Intellivision, with the exception of the post 2600 Ataris, the 3DO (so expensive!) and the Saturn. I did buy a 360 a launch, (no RRoD yet, knock on wood) but I love my PS2 and I think that the PS2 has been the most important game system for the last 20 years. I want Sony to be competitive. It's good for the industry. It's good for the developers to have options. But even after a $100 price drop, I still have customers walking away. Laughing. I am sitting on large volumes of hardware and software. It does not help me. I want to buy one, but cannot find a compelling reason to do so. I bought a DS lite a few weeks ago so I would have something to play on airplanes or in bed with my girl--geeky, I know. I dig that little system.

I can tell you, losing MGS as a PS3 exclusive worries me greatly as a businessperson in the industry. Final Fantasy is certainly a beautiful product in it's own right, but MGS crosses some generational boundaries that FF does not. It appeals to some other customers, which diversifies interest in the core product. I left Blockbuster nearly 3 years ago. But I am still having to deal with selling a damn DVD player and DVDs. The movie industry is not enough to make the PS3 a success. There is no true core consumer dissatisfaction with DVD. Blu-Ray is not the holy grail. It is not the light-year jump that VHS was to DVD. Sony invested heavily into an industry that has been in decline for 8 years due to piracy, poor content, and the fact that interactive entertainment has become a more entertaining and compelling proposition.

Sony needs great games. Many of them. Now. They are on the verge of losing greatly and I simply don't want that. I love my 360. I love my Nintendo. I love my Sony. I am a gamer. The money they lost on price cuts could have been invested into software. Exclusivity. That's where I would put that money that they are about to bathe red in. Into CONTENT. The other side effect, is this brilliant "10 year strategy" is the very thing that is undoing them. My sales ratios on PS2 hardware and software are NOT declining significantly. The Trojan horse has turned out to be their very own product, undoing their very own product.

They need to appeal to the industry for fresh ideas. Enhance the interface and innovate options. There's reason why the most revolutionary game and resulting gamer subculture of the last 5-10 years is a simple graphic music instrument simulator. It's fun. Although I suck at it. :). The Youtube videos blow me away on this title. Katamari is another example--so simple. So much fun.

The casual gamer has changed the business. Girlfriends, wives, grandparents, and people with not as much disposable time as before. I know this community is hardcore. But we have to acknowledge that Sony's biggest gaffe has been in neglecting this customer base with a product that inherently alienates them. This is where the growth is.

My god, this is a long post. But it is my first! If anyone actually remembers me in my future posts I will be honored, even if they flame me. I like games. And I like gamers even more, cause they're like me.

My appreciation to anyone who actually just read this wall of text. I am recovering from surgery, so I guess I had some time. Feel free to ask me questions about the business from a business standpoint. I'll shoot straight.

"And yes, I happily work for a competitive group that pushes an aggressive sales culture in reservations and subscriptions."

This "aggressive sales culture" you mention is really about the worst thing I can think of. You are adding to the amount of pushy sales calls, idiot cell phone vendors waving me down in the mall, and generally uncomfortable situations I will experience in a typical day, not to mention exponentially increasing the time it takes to complete what should be a simple transaction.

"and my sincere appreciation goes out to any of you who have ever reserved a game or bought Game Informer. You make our industry stronger."

There isn't a gaming publication out there that is HURTING the industry more than GI, and it goes beyond the obvious fact that the editorial staff is a group of pasty, mid-western trash that is leading the way in perpetuating the most tired cliches of game writing. Their "10 point" game rating scale is utterly broken. In a ten point scale, a 7 is not average! This simple mathematical truth eludes the dim-witted boys running GI. And its not out of ignorance. Its by request of publishers who don't want their Game Ranking and Metacritic scores to sink below 70. GI is not games journalism, it functions as advertisement, and with the amount of circulation this demonic mag gets (due to the deal with the devil made with your company) this is hurtful to the maturation of this medium.

"You want to find collectible games, or go up to a store and learn about a hidden treasure? My stores are your best bet."

You're absolutely wrong. The moment you idiots stopped selling and buying used PC games you stopped caring about game collectors. And then next it was PS1 games that disappeared. There are FAR more rare and collectible PS1 games than there are PS2, XBOX, and GC combined. Pawnshops, Goodwill stores and other places that sell used media are far better places to find rare games.

I dont understand why people think this would be the death of sony....

HELLOOOOO!! MGS2 and GTA3 both made PS2 the system that it is today, and both were ported to XBOX!! yes an MGS game was on xbox, and not suprisingly halo fanboys largely ignored the game, just like they would probably do with MGS4.

timed exclusives are usually just as good as regular exclusives for consoles because by the time it comes out on the other system nobody cares (gta series on xbox, MGS2 on xbox, oblivion on PS3) like everyone fails to point out that 360s best game (oblivion) is also on PS3 with better graphics.

Oblivion was updated on the 360 with the new shaders soon after the PS3 version was released. Currently, it looks the same on both consoles - but the framerate is better on the 360

ummm the shaders werent the only thing, ps3 also has longer draw distance, less pop up, and higher resolution texture smost noticable in the ground especially on stone walk ways.

and i wouldnt say the framerate is better, its decent on PS3 but watching my friend play on 360, sometimes it would be god awful when just fighting 2 enemies at once.

Well Oblivion being the 360's best game is debatable, but that's neither here nor there.

The problem is, timed exclusivity is less effective for Sony because most gamers aren't going to feel the need to rush out and pick up a 500/600 dollar console when they know they'll be getting a port a few months down the line.

And the PS2 didn't cost an arm and a leg like the PS3 does, so anytime someone compares them I can't help but laugh.

Regardless what happens the game will be better on the PS3. It was built on the PS3. Kojima utilized the blu-ray storage and the cell processor. I do hope it doesnt go to 360.

I'm sick of hearing you can buy a Wii and Redlight 360 for the same price. So sick of it.

The Wii is crap. Its last gen hardware with a wand you us to play with that is it. Everyone thinks is so good. In a year or 2 the Wii will be just like the GC dead and lost all support.

360 IS the wrost HARDWARE i have ever bought in my life. Bestbuy will not let me return anymore (2year plan with BB). I got a 360 at the start of the year and had to return them 5 times. I have now sold my 360.

I could really not care less if MGS FF Killzone HS Lair all go to the 360 (yes i know some are 1st praty) I would spend 100 more dallors on a system that does not fail. can play HD movies and Wifi out of the box.

All you TACO bell works pls STFU go play some crap halo and hope your system dont red light on you.

If you cant buy it i guess just talk trash about it? Thats the new wii360 memo?

I think that those predicting a non-spike in sales for the PS3 are being realistic, given that the price was just changed from "really, really expensive" to merely "really expensive". How can you blame Konami for sharing the love when sharing the love means adding millions of potential consumers who will help you recoup what undoubtedly are crazy development costs? Seeing that I predicted great success for the N64 you can safely say that I'm not Nostradamus; however I can say that much like our failed Iraq policy Sony has failed to show me exactly how they are going to get themselves out of the debacle that they have placed themselves squarely in the middle of. Hope they banked some of those PS2 profits.

Meh. I own all 3 systems, even if it does come out on 360 it will probably be at a later date and since it wasn't the lead platform (one of the rare times it isn't)it will probably run/look better on the PS3. If it does end up being better on the 360, I will never buy another multi-console release on the PS3 again.

No real surprise the industry is not ready for HD gaming, while the PS3 will have a niche it wont be bigger than the "halo" niche on the 360, face it the slow sales high price and tricky architecture makes the PS3 a niche within a niche its brand power was built off 3rd aprty and they love the WII becuse its using the PSX/PS2's cheap to produce for setup.

the PS3 will be normal in 5 more years but for now its just to much to soon so its just another high end console like the 360,Xbox,Saturn,DC,ect,ect its not doomed like some where its no 3Do or jaguar but its not PSX either.....

I was expecting this, but not so soon. After watching Tretton all day yesterday I noticed he kept driving home how "one game won't make or break the PS3" he made it a point to continue to stress that and I said to my brother , knowing corporate speak, that did not bode well for MGS3 exclusivity. And here it is.

There is a good possibility that this IS a warning shot to Sony to pony up some cash, or to do what has to be done to move units. Possibly, and likely, Konami has been pressuring Sony for awhile now for a price cut, it seems Sony caved a little but not enough to please the financial suits of Konami.

This is all guess work but these would be my guesses...

Don't forget Gears, Dead Rising, Crackdown & Lost Planet. And aside from Halo and Viva Pinata, MS has PGR & Forza to counter Gran Turismo, DOA and multiplatform VF5 to counter Tekken, Banjo Kazooie to counter Ratchet & Clank, for Final Fantasy...SquareEnix said they are developing games for all consoles, not to mention great fantasy RPGs like Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Eternal Sonata, and the increasingly likely possibility that FF13 may indeed end up on the 360. That leaves God of War. I'm not sure which game would be a counterpoint to that for MS but I'm sure they're working on it. I'm surprised you left off ICO/SotC. Oh, then there's Mass Effect and Bioshock which should do very well on 360.

So yeah. I hate list fights, but you didn't really paint a fair picture with your post.

My point being the 360 has a niche market of PC style high graphic(looks or gore you be the judge) games, the PS3 will be the same but with a few PSX franchises making it no better or worse than the 360 once the prices match,BR is a non issue for the most part the industry is not making large Hdef games that can not be put on 2 or 3 DVD9s without losing look or feel, thus the PS3 is a beast thats time has not yet come.

Like with the PSP sony just dose not get it they can not pull a format out of their arse and think it will do good,Lower the PSP to 129,you want UDM to do good start off putting a UDM disc in with all your DVDs at 1$ more, lower all UDM mo9ves to 9.99,start release classic hits PSP games at 12.99 a pop revitalize the brand for christ sake...prehaps they will get a clue for the PSP2.....BTW put 2 nubs in and redo the button layout so you can port games to it better and even make new games that control well.....

The PS3 should have been 399 at launch with all the wireless stuff as 70$ a pop extras and a default 20GB HDD,just think how the market would have reacted to that it would have been like the WII and sony would have gained ground on the BR front and most likely squashed HDVD by now.

Yeah, but you are talking about games that won't be out until 2008 or 2009. It isn't like we've had tons of news on these games. You just know they are coming because they are sequels to popular franchises. It isn't like the 360 won't be getting any more new great games then as well. Dead Rising, Lost Planet, Gears of War, Mass Effect, Too Human, Viva Pinata, Condemned, Shadowrun, and Bioshock are all games that are either good, great, or show great promise and are either out or will be by the end of the year and are new franchises. To think the 360 just won't get anything else in 2008 or 2009 just because not much is announced is ridiculous.

Not because i think its impossible, but i think it has been a rumor for too long with consistent and flat denials by the developer

I'd say IF MGS4 ever appears on the 360, it will still be a timed exclusive, but i've generally filed this one under "Microsoft fanboys' pipe dream" (which isn't to say that the other camps have their share of pipedreams)

The whole thing on "exclusives" kind of baffles me. Really aren't 90% of games out there multi-platform? I mean MGS and MGS2 both ended up on other consoles, but yet there a "the sky is falling" mentality to MGS4 that I just don't get. I understand why Sony needs MGS4 to be PS3 only- it gives everyone a reason to buy a PS3. But this isn't like the days of Genesis and SNES where rarely did you see the same title on both systems. Odds are if you have a PC. PS3 and/or 360 you'll have the opportunity to play most of what's out there.

I think it's been obvious for a while that they have to put this on the 360 to recoup develpment costs, it's that simple. Who said that the 360 needs MGS anyway? I love the series, and would play it, but there's plenty of triple A titles to keep me busy if it's a times exclusive. Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, plenty of multi platform releases which will be superior simply because of the accessibility of xb live. By the way, why do I need a blu-ray player when I can download hi-def movies over xblive? So much content on that service. Believe me, if MGS does come out I'll have to fit it in with all the other stuff I'm doing and playing on this awesome system. Yes, I own a Wii and PS2 - there is just not a single compelling reason to drop another $500 on a redundant system - that's about 8 or so games for my wii360 combo (Metroid, oh sweet mercy!).

Poor PS3 just can't catch a break. Like I've been telling everyone...price drops are just a temporary solution to a bigger problem. There just isn't any worthwhile exclusives to justify the PS3's price. They just stabbed all their fans in the back by limiting backward compatibility by removing the E.E. Sorry, but as soon as 360 and Wii respond to the price cut; down goes PS3 again!!!

Crying, I am sorry you feel that way. However, I assure you of two things;

1) If it was your own business and you needed to flourish, you'd do the same.

2) The industry and hobby are far better with Gamestop in the picture, than without GS. The business has achieved a commercial legitimacy and our model is the most accurate and detailed measure available for what is good, what is bad, what people enjoy, and what they will never buy. Gamers are a business to be reckoned with. Case in point being the current Sony situation.

I remember when capcom had to make a ported re4 from the ground up for the ps2 which was exclusive only for the nintendo gamecube. My heart sank when i heard the sad news about re4 being released on the ps2, a game which was solely designed to play on teh gamecube eventhough the ps2 version of the game was inferior. But im happy to hear about the MGS4 appearing on other cconsoles besides the ps3. I own a 360 and i be damned happy. Imagine MGS4 coming out for the wii. The last major exclusive sony has left is final fantasy XIII, i bet any money square enix will announce XIII for the wii.

Your comment was very well written, Cloaked. I usually lurk on the comments section as well. I was about to reply with something along the lines of "When did all the gamers become fanboys?" but taking a second to think it all out, I don't think its true. It's just that the most opinionated of gamers are the ones that leave comments. Gamers, and not fanboys, are still the (silent) majority. It is surprisingly refreshing when an actual middle of the road, unbiased gamer lets one's voice be heard.

Sony needs to revitalize the PS3 now,but with the limited price drop and the 80GB units replace the 60GB units at 599,all they are doing is pushing devs to other systems, sony needs to understand that it will either take losses now or take them later and possibly lose the brand altogether then.

Dont get me wrong the PS3 is a "media machine", but as a game system it should have been made in 09-011, they have made a beast, the games are far and few between and some seem to be better coded for the 360 ,the PS3 is in for a long climb back up the mountain and sony is tossing rocks at it, I think the ps3 will suffer from "niche within a niche" issues until 09 or 011...I also do not see it regaining the throne this go round, the WII has pretty much captured the hearts of non gamers and gamers alike and the 360 is doing its "steal pc games" niche thing the Xbox did.
