PS3 price drop drives Amazon sales
Yesterday, the 60GB PlayStation 3 sales surged on Amazon following the $100 price drop. One day later and it still going strong, with a 2,700% increase in rank. It was previously number one on the charts but has since been taken over by the fragFX PS3 gamepad, seeing a 40,078% rise in rank. In fact, 13 of the top 16 sales movers are PlayStation 3 software and accessories. Last we heard, Sony was screen-capping the website and forwarding it to Konami.
[Update: the 2700% increase in sales is from sales rank - i.e. from 28 to 2 -- not sales. Sorry for the flub in phrasing.]

Umm, Ross Miller, it didn't gain 2700% in sales, but in rank. Two completely different things.
3cubedminus3squared @ Jul 10th 2007 2:13PM
Exactly what I was thinking.
Someone should tell the guys posting over at PS3fanboy.
Grog @ Jul 10th 2007 2:13PM
From Amazon's page:
"The Movers & Shakers index identifies, by category, the biggest gainers in sales rank at Amazon.com in the past 24 hours. For example, suppose a music item has a sales rank of 10 today, but was ranked as low as 30 yesterday. Its Movers & Shakers increase would be 200 percent."
Marty @ Jul 10th 2007 2:02PM
Obviously, they went from 1 sale to 27 in one day. A large jump, yes, but an amazing number of sales, I think not.
samfish @ Jul 10th 2007 2:04PM
CLEARLY this is a sign that the Wii and 360 are finished.
FINISHED!
arrrgh @ Jul 10th 2007 2:05PM
true
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 10th 2007 2:05PM
Its not in sales, just rank... please Joystiq, don't confuse the readers.
sheppy @ Jul 10th 2007 2:21PM
Ummm, it says "Sales" right there. I know your english is bad but this is getting ridiculous. Also, the PS3 is not in the number 1 spot and PS3 games and related items are not occupying 16 of the top 25 spots.
Facing facts, sales are on a definative rise. And hell, considering some of the bargains you can snag, is it a suprise? My PS3 hating friend is now looking at it with a free controller and 5 free BluRay movies and trying to decide whether he could afford it now, rather than whether he wants it or not. Hell, he's a hardcore Ninty fan (not gonna say fanboy... he bought his first non-Nintendo console last christmas with PS2) and these bargains are putting the priority on PS3 before the Wii.
Fernando Rocker @ Jul 10th 2007 2:35PM
Shepeppy. Long time no see.
Almack64 @ Jul 10th 2007 4:57PM
Sheppy have you been gone smoking something or are you being sarcastic?
Grindstone @ Jul 10th 2007 2:05PM
If I were Sony (and I'm not), I would be screen camping Amazon.com and forwarding it to Kojima too. And I'd send flowers, chocolates, hookers (pre-paid) and whatever else it would take to keep the 360 fanboys from gloating over another lost PS3 exclusive title.
doshey @ Jul 10th 2007 2:06PM
haha
Stef Geiger @ Jul 10th 2007 2:06PM
It's actually at 3200% now, so post deserves an update.
Phranctoast @ Jul 10th 2007 2:34PM
that was pretty funny. I like how you stated you werent Sony.
webbah @ Jul 10th 2007 2:06PM
pretty good considering amazon doesn't sell wii's
doshey @ Jul 10th 2007 2:08PM
yes they do
Jon A. @ Jul 10th 2007 2:12PM
Wii's are still sold out on Amazon I believe.
Andy S. @ Jul 10th 2007 4:34PM
Considering that I bought my Wii on Amazon just a couple of weeks ago, I beg to differ.
Game Artist @ Jul 10th 2007 2:07PM
What is this the pent up demand for the canceled 20gb model? Id be shocked to see the incresed sales sustained long.
CrazedCow @ Jul 10th 2007 2:09PM
read the thing at the bottom of the amazon.com screen. all it means is that it jumped from position 27 to 1, not that it is selling 2700% more units. i'm sure as soon as the 360 drops in price you'll see an even higher number, as its sales rank was pushed down by the ps3 drop. then when it gains back a higher sales rank, the % will rocket.
Vince @ Jul 10th 2007 2:10PM
percentages don't mean anything without numbers. this is just trying to generate hype that's not there.
RD @ Jul 10th 2007 2:11PM
It should be mentioned that a few people are probably interested in obtaining the 60 gb model specifically...as the new 60 and 80 gb model are lacking the hardware based backwards compatibility.
Yes, an assumption, but it's still a strong possibility.
FrankTheCrank @ Jul 10th 2007 2:11PM
Ah...wait for month to month numbers. That will be a better indicator.
I can't wait for the numbers!!
By the way, how's the 360 doing on AMAZON post RROD meltdown?
FrankTheCrank @ Jul 10th 2007 2:14PM
Wow...360 is coming in at #26...
"Redmond, we have a problem..."
Digi Smalls @ Jul 10th 2007 2:15PM
Frank,
would you be surprised that after this E3 and the 3 year warranty announcement, 360 sales might actually go up?
your fanboy is showing again.
.
FrankTheCrank @ Jul 10th 2007 2:19PM
Digi...
My pal...dude...I am a fanboy, of videogames. And I will certainly be in line when Microsoft straightens out their "multiple hardware problems". But till then, I'll pass on my 1/3 chances.
Noshino @ Jul 10th 2007 2:21PM
that means that now malfunctioning 360s can be send without worries for 3 years everytime they crash right?
FrankTheCrank @ Jul 10th 2007 2:24PM
Noshino,
Correct. Three years of worrying whether your system is about to melt down again. Then having to go through tech support and sending it back. Who needs that whole mess. God bless you guys that have dealt with that. I would have been bullsh*t and totally dissapointed.
I'll wait for the "new and improved" system.
dpad @ Jul 10th 2007 2:39PM
@frank
"My pal...dude...I am a fanboy, of videogames. "
No, you're a Sony fantard who feels the need to inject a anti Nintendo/Microsoft comment on every fucking post.
Nice try though.
Noshino @ Jul 10th 2007 2:39PM
FrankTheCrank,
Sorry, that was in regard of the previous comment
"would you be surprised that after this E3 and the 3 year warranty announcement, 360 sales might actually go up?"
I mean, how does a 3 year warranty calms you down? I think that all that shows is that the number is much worse than MS inittially thought and so they are trying to cover all their mess, well, unless you are blind and you don't want to see that.
If I see a product with a high failure rate, and its company not even being honest enough to give thier own numbers, then I would be more scared, I don't think it would raise the sales in ANY WAY
Marty @ Jul 10th 2007 3:00PM
LOL, "meltdown"? You have a vivid imagination!
Digi Smalls @ Jul 10th 2007 3:08PM
of course they're trying to cover their own mess, everyone sees that, that's kind of the point.
it's a company honest enough to finally admit it's a real problem and that they'll take care of it, when before they hadn't so...anyone nervous about getting a 360 before this announcement should be less nervous now, not more.
not sure how knowing the exact figures would really matter to you unless you're a stockholder. every 360 in existence is covered.
does the RROD still suck? of course, but as of now, its no longer the risk it was before.
.
Jason @ Jul 10th 2007 3:27PM
Frank, you're a fool. Very soon, once your system is fixed (with the new heatsink they started adding) the problem should not crop up again.
AKM @ Jul 10th 2007 2:14PM
up 3,200%
Beaudry @ Jul 10th 2007 2:14PM
PS3 is on the top of the main page at Amazon. That certainly can't hurt sales there.
AirIntake @ Jul 10th 2007 2:14PM
The PS3 hardly had a price drop, it just had a spec upgrade. There is no $399 PS3. Nobody is saving $100. You are getting 40 extra gigs for the same price (or only 20 extra gigs for the same price if you go for the 80G model). Not quite the same thing as a price drop if you only want to spend $399.
Will @ Jul 10th 2007 2:20PM
you're not just getting an extra 40gb, you're getting wifi and memory card readers...so, yes it is a price drop
AirIntake @ Jul 10th 2007 2:21PM
Not if you don't want to spend $499 it isn't.
Hak Foo @ Jul 10th 2007 5:21PM
Actually there was a price drop. Last week there was no $499 version of the PS3. Today there is. Seems like a drop to me?
Vidikron @ Jul 10th 2007 2:29PM
Your reasoning only works if you ignore that the 20 GB is all but extinct now.
Rod Oracheski @ Jul 10th 2007 2:16PM
The top item is the PS3. The second item is the remote for Blu Ray playback.
Is this actually gamers jumping on board, or just people finally going for the hi-def movie format?
Does it really matter for Sony either way? Sure, someone buying it solely for Blu Ray movies won't buy games, but they'll still be buying movies.
Hak Foo @ Jul 10th 2007 5:24PM
That is probably because Amazon is having a special: PS3, the remote and Memento on blu-ray for $499.
FrankTheCrank @ Jul 10th 2007 2:17PM
I would have rather seen a $399 PS3.
20GB for $399 and 60GB for $499.
The whole 80GB PS3 just brings us back to Nov06, two SKU's, $499 and $599. Kinda repetitive, don't you think?
Tony @ Jul 10th 2007 2:18PM
It's not like a spike is unexpected... What'll be more interesting is how long it lasts.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 10th 2007 2:20PM
go go ps3
Digi Smalls @ Jul 10th 2007 2:27PM
wow, 'cheerleading' a console is no longer a figure of speech.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 10th 2007 2:38PM
i only posted that to get reactions out of people. which i did. hooray.
I wont be picking up a ps3 until I can get one for $300. Just like I won't get a 360 until I can get an elite for $300. I will never buy a console for over $300. any more is too much for a toy.
Noshino @ Jul 10th 2007 2:41PM
I won't get a Wii til I can get it for the same price as a GI JOE action figure
Digi Smalls @ Jul 10th 2007 2:53PM
oh, you were trolling? weird, ok.
Luis Zapata @ Jul 10th 2007 2:20PM
Wait until Microsoft officially announces the new model and the cheaper price. Then Nintendo announces a $50-$70 price cut plus cheaper controllers or something similar. Nintendo has a surprise this time, this time without hype. Microsoft will surprise us too. Let's wait and see what E3 has in store.
