Yesterday, the 60GB PlayStation 3 sales surged on Amazon following the $100 price drop. One day later and it still going strong, with a 2,700% increase in rank. It was previously number one on the charts but has since been taken over by the fragFX PS3 gamepad, seeing a 40,078% rise in rank. In fact, 13 of the top 16 sales movers are PlayStation 3 software and accessories. Last we heard, Sony was screen-capping the website and forwarding it to Konami.
[Update: the 2700% increase in sales is from sales rank - i.e. from 28 to 2 -- not sales. Sorry for the flub in phrasing.]

And yet the Wii is selling a dollar short of $350 from 3rd party merchants over there.

The whole Wii thing is just CRAZY. From a gamers standpoint, it doesn't make sense, especially when you throw in the weak graphics. But man, it's selling like HOT CAKES.
I love my Wii, and wouldn't give it up, even for a 360 Elite. The first party titles are awesome and the family loves it.

Yes Sony sent the webpage. And Microsoft is sending a copy of the 360 warranty extension to every lawyer in the world.

Malfunctioning limited to the Red Ring of Death related breakdowns. Peter Moore was VERY specific with that wording on the Major Nelson special. So in other words, you're covered from the most common defect of the console, which is good. But if your hard drive crashes, disc drive jams (Wombat of CagCasts issue), AC shorts out, or any number of other, more rare problems, you're stuck paying repair cost.
3 years pertains to RROD only. But that is ALSO the biggest issue with the system right now so that's a HUGE relief.

Must say I'm pretty surprised. I didn't think the price drop would make much of a difference. To me $500 is still too much for a console. All the best to em, though, I'll be real interested to see the effect on sales at retail.

To prove how meaningless these percentages are, the PS3 is now at 500% from it's latest move. People are definitely putting too much thought into it lol.
It's definitely doing better and I think people should be happy about it, but this list is meaningless for any sort of real pissing contest.

Somebody is actually buying a power hungry Blu Ray player? Yeah right. ~200 watts just to play a movie is not that smart of a choice. If I ever buy a PS3, it will be for the games. I will already have bought a combo HD-DVD/BD player by then. Unless someone actually wins the format wars and I buy a player for one format. Actual BD players consume ~50 watts. That plus the receiver and the TV.
Posted: Jul 10th 2007 2:37PM (Unverified) said
You definitely make a good point, but I don't think the average consumer even pays attention to wattage.

if you found out your 360 used $100 more electricity than a ps3 in one year, then who would be laughing?
That's not the case, I'm just saying
The study showed the Wii however uses like 1/10 of the power of the 360/ps3/PC

Oh please. I bet most of you leave your PC on all day, if not 24 hrs a day. Most people are only going to game a couple of hours per day on average.. if that. The difference in energy cost between playing a Wii and PS3 is going to be laughable. I DO pay my own bills and haven't seen any noticeable change in my monthly electric bills with all 3 systems in the house with the 360 and PS3 getting the bulk of the play time.

You know what would be funny? If Nintendo dropped the Wii price to $200...Ouch that would hurt.
Posted: Jul 10th 2007 2:46PM Paviel said
Yes, it would hurt, I think. Not only would it hurt MS and Sony by widening the price gap, but it would also hurt Nintendo by lowering its profits.
The only thing that prics cuts are really good for is getting products off the store shelves, and the Wii doesn't need any help in that regard. Once the hype dies down, one might expect a price cut, but not a moment sooner.

You can get a great deal on a PS3 from Amazon.
$499.99 + Free Movie(Memento) + Free Remote Control - $30 (If you sign up for the Amazon Credit Card = $469.99 shipped.
And if you add in the fact that you will get 1500 Amazon reward point which amounts to $15 then the total cost is
$454.99.
You can also get 5 free Blu-Ray movies(Selection sucks except for a few titles)
Amazon won't give you that $15 dollars, unless you have accumulated 2500 Reward points which amounts to $25. Thats only $300 worth of stuff from Amazon. I don't really mind, since I shop for most of my college books on Amazon anyway which will bring me to that goal right quick.
All in-all its a great deal for you nay-sayers.

Gee...they must be selling a shitload of Blu-Ray movies as well, then, because as I understand it, the PS3 has zilch for actual games. Oh yeah, check it. The silver PS2 is also in that list. Go figure.
Posted: Jul 10th 2007 3:03PM FredFredrickson said
He's right, "zilch" describes the PS3's library well enough. They sold you a $600 piece of junk on the promise of future games, which are taking 2 years to come down the pipe, and may not be exclusives by the time they do. Sad, really.

the landscape is very different for the PS3.

Wait! Stop the press!
Ok.. I remember not buying one when the other SKU was $499 and yet they discontinued the $499 model. Funny stuff Sony. I fail to see their reasoning to this price model. The $499 and $599 pricing model has already proven it doesn't work.
Just when you think Sony has learned not to shoot themselves in the foot anymore, BAM! The gun goes off again. But hey, at least the PS3 is still "dominant."
