That sucks I think the PSP would be a perfect fit for this game.

Although skeptical about how well this sort of game will work out on consoles, I've always been a fan of the series on my PC and hoped it might make a good addition to my PSP library. Bummer.

Aw - this is terrible! As much as I love my DS I was really hoping for the PSP to get this as well ... I hope you are wrong ...

Yep, a big FU for 2K Games - I won't buy anything else from you. Thanks for bailing on support for a particularly well-suited, current and viable platform.

We are starting to see the begining of the end of the PSP with regards to 3rd parties. Perhaps the biggest sign was no NCAA football for the PSP this year, despite selling well last year (despite being buggy). After the Summer, I expect things to slow to a trickle.

WTH, they should've been more clear, and just said the ds. Unless they recently changed their mind on doing a psp version. Well, I was planning on getting the pc version anyways. Still, I just don't see why there shouldn't be a psp version. I'm sure it would've been a winner.

If this really is the beginning of the end, then F the publishers for bailing on it this early and F Sony for blowing it with a system that had so much potential. With an installed user base this large, there should be more games, bigger name games and more game sales.

I think it's early to claim this is really the start of a trend toward developer loss, but it's possible, I suppose. Some publishers will only go whichever way they see the wind blowing. Creativity and risk-taking speculation is a lost facet to game development.

I don't know if I'd start calling this non-announcement the death of PSP development just yet. Let's see what else E3 brings. Besides, just because it's not announced right now doesn't mean it won't happen in the future. Pirates came out for PSP a couple years after other platforms. I would imagine how well that sold will determine whether or not they make a PSP version of Civ.

Anything built for the Wii by third parties can easily be made for the PSP...shouldn't be the end for quite awhile.

I don't think they announced a PSP release and then pulled it. You guys are going to boycott a company for YOUR misunderstanding? That's just silly.

@vR

"Slated for a spring 2008 release for next generation consoles and handhelds"

Someone either changed their mind, or that was a typo.

@Saigon

It was just a press release. They were vague, sure, but what benefit would they get from deliberately misleading we PSP users?

It's possible that no one changed their mind. It's possible that it was not a typo. It's possible they felt like being vague because it's a simple press release.

Fellas, all I'm saying is that it's just goofy to boycott a company because they were vague, you got your hopes up, and were ultimately disappointed.

Who cares if it was a press release, they made a mistake, which mislead gamers. I'm not saying we should all cry about it, and boycott them. And, I never thought they deliberately mislead us.

As far as I'M concerned, a press release should be taken seriously, and be clear as possible. Imagine reading a press release announcing FF13, or Halo 3, and it mistakingly said it was coming to next-gen consoles. Albeit, Civ is no FF or Halo, but it IS really popular.

@8 I wonder if it has anything to do with piracy? Maybe developers are pulling back because the software doesn't sell as well as it could (the deal with lumines was ridiculous). I don't get this as well because civ would be much better on the PSP then the DS.

Who cares if it's a press release? I work in advertising (all the more reason for all of you to hate me). A press release is a mere announcement. They're often vague, lacking in detail, and they are not necessarily a statement of fact. They just announce. It doesn't matter what YOU think they mean.

Press releases are meant for the media, not you, the gamer. If anyone misled you, it's the site you read the press release at.

And there's a difference between a mistake and an ambiguity.

I don't see developers 'pulling back'. Certainly the DS is getting more stuff and developer focus, but the PSP is doing just fine. We've had this discussion countless times - this isn't a 'zero sum game', a 'win' for the DS isn't a 'loss' for the PSP ... both systems are greatly expanding handheld gaming.

As for the initial release, it was vague, and now is clarified. It is unfortunate but there it is.

I will still get the DS version, but am saddened by the loss of the PSP version.

Actually, the DS is better suited for this with its touch screen. Using an analog nub to cycle through menus in a turn based strategy game is not my idea of fun.
