We know it's just a series of quick cuts from what appears to be an African village, but our zombie-shooting fingers were literally itching while we watched this new Resident Evil 5 trailer ... and we're not even sure any of those people were zombies. Which either shows that we're really excited for this game and the trailer did its job, or that Jack Thompson was right all along.
No, you just need skilled artists. Obviously it can't be ported to the Wii from the much more powerful PS3 and/or 360, but I haven't really seen anything of RE5 that wouldn't be able to turn out pretty nice on the Wii if done well. Not that it really matters though, I'm having a blast playing through RE4 again on Wii, and this doesn't really look too promising so far, but if it does turn out as good as RE5 then I have a 360 to play it on anyways.
28 days later meets Lord of War. Cool, but the sole eason I'm excited for the game right now honestly is because of the graphics and because I'm hooked on Re4 Wii
Seems like they are taking a somewhat similar approach as they did with RE4. Seems like it will be some kind of plague that is spreading through the area or something that like in 28 Days/Weeks Later causes zombie/rage effect.
I seriously hope they add a couple of things that RE4 was missing though, like a quick weapon change and context sensitive CQC execution moves (a la The Darkness.) Either way, after playing RE4 for like the 5th time on the Wii, they could release the exact same game with a new story and updated graphics and I'd be fighting to be the first in line to buy it!
So Capcom's going to Africa with RE5, making zombies out of the natives, and using a White guy as the protagonist? Ooh, the racism zealots are going to have a field day with this one. I see the Japanese company getting a crash course lesson in the hysterical American political correctness system.
To be fair, it is kinda touchy and demeaning in a "Great White Hope"/"Tarzan Conquers Africa" sort of way. Far be it from me to criticize consumer desire for Anglicized heroes, but you're probably right: the symbolism alone will invite controversy. That kind of controversy could only help to build hype and drive sales though.
It's the same as RE4, except this time its not in a small town in Spain, its a Small town in... I can't guess what part of Africa, all those countries look alike
Black videogame characters that aren't athletes, gangsters, or Army men? Let's praise the diversity here
though i think it does resemble Chris more, maybe it will be Carlos and there will be no problem. After all, it's not racist for a Latino to kill African zombies.
Same reaction -- given the sociopolitical system here in the US, you just know a white guy killing zombies who were once actual Africans, is going to raise all sorts of hysteria. Anyone who thinks otherwise, or is creeped out by the notion that this issue still exists, or who claims they don't see the issue here, is a fool who has no grasp the actual social climate here.
you just generalized a group of people about how they generalize a group of people.
Ever played Xenosaga? Some scenes depicted explorers in a small part of Africa, and they weren't biast against them. There are also numerous Animes and Japanese movies that depicts 3rd world countries fairly.
You're generalizing, but there is some truth to what you said. Japan is ethnically homogeneous. The most famous black man in Japan at one time was a former football player who ate bananas much to the amusement of a culture that likens blacks to gorillas ( http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=970830954092486528&q=ufc ).
It's not that the Japanese are racist. They're just not generally all that understanding of foreigners. It's ignorance really. They're like children--happy, tech savvy, sushi-eating, wealthy children.
Joystiq, could you PLEASE link to Gametrailers or Youtube videos instead of Gamevideos? Their movies do not work on a lot of peoples macs and they seem to be in no hurry to fix it (it hasn't work since they've been around).
Steve, it's because 1UP are anti-Apple zealots, much like yourself, and they don't want it working for the exact reason zombies like you will feel better about hating macs.
well.. japanese media in general has never been that politically correct.
Watch any of the old pokemon or dragonball cartoons where the black characters all looked like something from a 40s disney cartoon, or a blackface act??
All i can say is that i sure HOPE they were zombies.. or it'll be trouble. (be nice if they gave us a black player character.. and one who wasn't a walking stereotype. but i don't expect that move to come from a japanese studio first..)
I want to love this game, but there is something creepy about a white hero wasting a load of black people. I agree that that's not going to go down well with a lot of people.
Maybe you need to stop seeing color in everything. I just saw a hero wasting a load of people, race or color wasn't even a thought. The fact that you would have said nothing at all if they were a bunch of white people being mowed down instead is what's creepy to me.
You know, I can see everyones point about racism in this game. I, for one, would find it much less offensive if the African natives were Russian. But I'm just being facetious.
While I understand that Africa is a culturally diverse continent, I would not surprised to find small tribal communities consisting solely of dark skinned people. And if I was Umbrella, these people would make good candidates for experimentation. They would want to keep low profile.
Of course, this means the real problem is not how dark the natives' skins are, but that the locale is racist, in general. The white man does not belong there. I think we Americans would be much more comfortable if we found our main character in the middle east, killing Muslim zombies. Am I right?
They should have it for the wii too. Wii controls would be good on RE games (like they are for for re4 wii version and will probably be for Umbrella Chronicles). The wii could have just as good graphics too..
Great, now I'm gonna have to go out and buy a ps3 or 360!
This looks like it has a lot of promise. I love how they're taking the whole "zombie" thing in a new direction. It doesn't change the feel of the game, but the story actually evolves. A sign that a staff of writers actually CARE whether or not the players believe the storyline.
I remember Capcom said last year that these are new enemies, not zombies or crazy villagers/cultist with parasites inside their bodies. What they are I dont know.
This thread sums up every thing wrong with our society today a bunch of overly sensitive politically correct cry baby's out to censor every thing that might cause offence to a minority group how ever non intended it is.
I can just imagen your mentality while watching this vid instead of the adverage persons response of "hmm looks a bit dodgy tbh no game play footage gay" its more along the line of :
Shit ! black people in Africa o0 and the male lead from resident evil 1 with a gun! and omg hes white! i bet he's there to enslave those poor foke and send them to the cotton field.

This trailer reminds me of 28 days later.

JodyAnthony @ Jul 11th 2007 9:22AM

kmo @ Jul 11th 2007 8:46AM
it cant come to the wii cos you would need about 10 wii's put together to run the graphics of re5.

Any reason why this is filed under just the xbox 360?
baby sea tuna @ Jul 11th 2007 8:59AM
You mean, you don't know?
Justin McElroy @ Jul 11th 2007 9:00AM
Well, we weren't supposed to let this exclusive bit of info slip, but ... I'm dumb. It's fixed. Thanks, fella.

So it seems like RE5 will be in Detroit... :-P
Nice graphics, I hope it is as fun as RE4. It's a shame it will not be available for Wii.

I don't trust Capcom to make this game.
Historically Japanese games have a very harsh view of blacks in general, either they are brutish or mute or comic characters.
A whole game based in Africa is going to be a PR nightmare IMO. Hopefully it will be pretty "fair" and not "bias"
zwarrior @ Jul 11th 2007 11:10AM
