First video of Gears of War on PC
The just-announced Gears of War looks fantastic on the PC. The already-beautiful Unreal Engine 3 is pushed even further on Games For Windows as can be seen in this first ever footage of the game running on the PC. With new levels, a level editor, and more surprises on the way, will Xbox 360 owners cry at feeling neglected by this "super-awesome" version?

No mention of new content as dl for 360? oh well.
Huey2k2 @ Jul 11th 2007 1:19AM
I got to admit, I am a very disappointed that the new content isn't coming to the 360 via the marketplace. I would gladly pay for it.
qbix @ Jul 11th 2007 1:19AM
All that new content better be coming to the 360 or I'm going to be pissed.
eldee @ Jul 11th 2007 2:10AM
Why? 360 players have been playing GoW forever now. They've got to sweeten the deal a bit to move units, it's common sense.
erac3rx @ Jul 11th 2007 1:20AM
Okay, MS needs to run some of its ideas by some of its customers first.
GoW to PC? Angers people who bought a 360 for Gears, as well as making the game go from exclusive to extremely non-exclusive.
Halo 3 themed 360? Ask the people who just bought an Elite how they feel about having it now... now that there's a truly Elite version.
2ez @ Jul 11th 2007 1:21AM
Not to mention that the Halo 3 SKU comes in a lovely, lovely olive green... :I
Ian Von Porter @ Jul 11th 2007 1:27AM
But, arent all your AV equipment in lovely olive green?
Phil @ Jul 11th 2007 1:30AM
What are you guys talking about? This version isnt "ELITE" at all. It doesnt even come with the 120 gig drive (see XBOX.com for the official rundown of what it comes with).
Its just simply this:
A green premium.
NobleArc @ Jul 11th 2007 1:38AM
eh, according to Bungie, it's got an HDMI port, whatever that means. Check their site.
kingofwale @ Jul 11th 2007 1:21AM
although I'd love to play this game, there's NO WAY i'm getting Vista. GoW is not worth the pain of having to suffer Vista day in a day out.
atg @ Jul 11th 2007 1:23AM
in the press conference Cliffy B said for XP and vista
Huey2k2 @ Jul 11th 2007 1:27AM
They announced it would be compatable with XP too.
abstract_visions @ Jul 11th 2007 1:22AM
One thing that I'm looking forward to is all the user created content/mods (assuming you can make mods via UnrealScript with it, would be odd if you couldn't). That was the great thing about UT2004.
Gold @ Jul 11th 2007 1:22AM
They had to know people would be clammering to have this on 360. I can gaurantee they are already planning on releasing it on marketplace but for some reason or another have not announced it.
V1L3 @ Jul 11th 2007 1:27AM
It's like Microsoft are intentionally trying to drive people away from their consoles and back into the PC arena. And I can't for the life of me think why they'd want to DO that....
Vista's not owned by Microsoft... is it..?
FrankTheCrank @ Jul 11th 2007 5:40AM
Micro$oft just gave me another reason why I don't need to buy the 360.
I just bought a 360 controller for my PC gaming rig, works awesome with Geometry Wars. I'll be buying Lost Planet this weekend. And when GOW comes out, I'll buy that as well.
Louis @ Jul 11th 2007 1:35AM
There are still millions of video gamers who haven't made the leap into the next gen, but with a PS3 price cut making the lower SKU PS3 competitive, people will not like the fact that Microsoft is pushing so hard to get people onto Games for Windows. Add that to the copious number of reports on the failure rates of the 360.
I love my 360 and own about 15 games for it, but this press conference made me doubt their commitment.
This was the conference to really push the 360 over the edge if they had announced a small ($25, $50) price cut, at least ONE big announcement such as MGS4 or a new Final Fantasy title, and all of this Gears of War stuff was for the 360 and not the PC.
I guess Viva Pinata: Party Animals sounds fun.
DaveC @ Jul 11th 2007 1:52AM
Joystiq, you've gotta find out whether or not this'll share achievements with the 360 version and whether or not it'll be cross platform?
ihateemo @ Jul 11th 2007 1:52AM
God, stop the fracking crying! It gets old so fast. You KNOW that console games (especially hit Xbox games) make it to PC after a while. You KNOW the PC will have superior graphics due to the ever-evolving nature of the hardware. You KNOW that user-created content is likely because of the Windows environment (hello Morrowind and Oblivion).
You know all this and you STILL pout like spoiled little shites. Get a fracking grip. You (and I, I own a 360 too) had Gears of Wars ages before the PC gamers. Why do you care so much about exclusivity? Stop being jealous crybabies and let the other kids play on the monkey bars too.
Alex K @ Jul 11th 2007 2:18AM
As a 360 owner, this isn't a big deal. I've been playing gears a full year before PC people, and all the extra content (with exception to the map editor) will probably by added to the 360 content.
besides that, i may have a PC, but I don't plan on buying vista anytime soon. it's a terrible operating system and having a game on the pc platform that i already have won't compel me to buy vista.
besides, i paid $200 for my xbox (plus $50 for hdd). I can't get a video card that will handle gears for that much, never mind that and the extra RAM i need for vista.
faceless coward @ Jul 11th 2007 11:38AM
As some people said before, Cliffy B said Gears would be coming "for Vista and XP."
Alex K @ Jul 11th 2007 2:20AM
sorry to add to my comment before, but really microsoft's strategy of using games (like halo 2 and gears) to get people to buy vista is just silly. that's the only reason these games are on PC at all. microsoft doesn't care what i use as long as it's xbox or vista, but they sure as hell don't want me using xp or mac. i'm not using any operating system that requires 2GB minimum for the full feature set until memory costs $7 per GB
Wilky @ Jul 11th 2007 6:43AM
Memory prices usually stay around the same price. It's just the capacity that increases. So I guess you'll be waiting a long time then.
Caramelzappa @ Jul 11th 2007 2:26AM
I've owned a 360 since christmas, and been playing Gears on live since I got it. We've heard rumors and hints of Gears coming to the PC since it was released on the 360, why is everyone whining? The graphics can be improved with the more powerful (though much more expensive) hardware that pc's have to offer, and this brings user-created content into the game which could really freshen up gameplay. I for one have gotten bored of the same old gears maps. The new campaign levels are bound to be short, but it's nice to see something new there as well.
Gotta agree with ihateemo though, you guys need to stop being crybabies and instead just consider this new(ish) pc game.
Caramelzappa @ Jul 11th 2007 2:26AM
Alex, it supports XP, this isn't to get to to switch to Vista, it's to bring GoW to a new platform (Which is still microsoft), while still just sending more money their way.
Alex K @ Jul 11th 2007 10:06AM
oh, i figured that if it was anything like halo 2 it would be for vista only.
in any event, it's not going to get me to upgrade my whole system to get a very slightly better PC version. Again, 360 users have been enjoying gears for a year by the time gears PC comes out. It doesn't upset me at all that Microsoft is releasing a PC version. $50-60 for new content on the PC version?? no way, if the extra content comes out for 360, they'll price it lower than that.
Look at PC game sales and you'll see that they need a good boost. The PC isn't as supreme as it used to be, so it doesn't bother me that MS is trying to give PC games CPR.
p3arl @ Jul 11th 2007 10:18PM
........pricks, damn you cliffy. i only like the GOW campaign (i dont know what but i find the multiplayer very bland)
oh well, halo3
incrediblebulk92 @ Jul 11th 2007 3:11AM
I'm not convinced that gears will work as a PC shooter it seems like its been built as a tactical shooter that seem to work better on consoles.
Although I suppose twitch shooters are built to work with the keyboard/mouse combo but can work well on consoles so...who knows
SeriousKriss @ Jul 11th 2007 5:40AM
Games like Armed Assault or SWAT 4 deserve to be called tactical shooters, but Gears of War definitely isn't one. And why would tacical shooters work better "on console" (I suppose you meant "with a pad", but pads work on PC too you know...)?
Ryan de michigan @ Jul 11th 2007 3:35AM
you know, I f^ckin love this game
Jonathan Tran @ Jul 11th 2007 8:06AM
I would get this if it wasn't Vista only.
MS keeeps thinking if they make games Vista only it will move more units of Vista.
What it's doing for me is gettign pissed at MS for this marketing bull.
Also they would never make crossplatform since it would prove that controller < mouse and keyboard < wiimote
John @ Jul 11th 2007 11:14AM
wow except for the fact that this game is XP compatible, (invalidating your whole point,) you are a genius. Plus Gears was lame... oooh quick jump over this block and hide behind that one!! look how pretty my armor is!!!!! wow who knew so many shade of grey existed!!!!!! I hereby nominate GOW for the Most beautiful HD graphics using 3 colors game of the year award.
UT3 FTW!
faceless coward @ Jul 11th 2007 11:40AM
Yeah, Cliffy B specifically said it would be coming to "Vista and XP."
Jake @ Jul 11th 2007 9:15AM
Er, this happens with really popular 3rd part playstation games too. Read up on it.
People blow this out of proportion. As much as you like to think this means you don't need a 360 (assuming you can wait 1-3 years to play games like this), it doesn't matter to the average consumer.
MS is smart. They know the vast majority of 360 owners do not have a powerful gaming rig and vice versa. Sure, some hardcores that visit this site do. But overall, not really. If this game was shifting to PS3, there would be a concern of commitment.
Why not cash in on this game again. I am not pissed. Of all the 360 games I've bought, Gears and Oblivion were the ones I got the most hours out of. It isn't like I won't be getting other sweet games to play this fall...
Jake @ Jul 11th 2007 9:16AM
It is XP and Vista. Fuck, nobody here even reads the articles or watches the releases.
YOU DON'T NEED VISTA FOR GEARS PC!!!
SoulBlade @ Jul 11th 2007 9:53AM
best news of the conference imo. now i don't need to buy a 360 to play gears... probably won't for halo 3... don't need it for bioshock...
just gotta be patient and enjoy other games for the time being. good times.
Defenestrator2.0 @ Jul 11th 2007 11:36AM
I swear to god, I heard one of the people being shot doing the Dean Scream.
Elijah @ Jul 11th 2007 11:40AM
To the person who assumes Vista-only:
- This isnt the same as the Halo-franchise porting, which is clearly Microsoft's move to push its own monopoly-ware. Microsoft has way more control of Bungie (partial ownership, if not full-on I believe), and is porting Halo to PC as a Microsoft product.
- Microsoft is NOT porting Gears of War to PC, EPIC is porting GoW to PC. Epic's contract with Microsoft was probably limited exclusivity on the Xbox 360. Anyone familiar with Epic's history with the Unreal series will know that they have always been about modability, free downloadable content, and PC-community love... up until Unreal Engine 3 (not sure if it still is) all of their games had Linux-love as well.
Jonathan Tran @ Jul 11th 2007 11:57AM
Okay sorry about that guys.
In that case I might get this if it's XP compatible.
Is the multiplayer really that good btw? I don't carea boout FPS single player stuff really.
Liam @ Jul 11th 2007 1:31PM
This is great news! I've been debating on whether to get a PS3 or 360 for a while. And Gears plus Halo and Live were the only selling points for 360. Now I can get them on my pc, with a gamer tag and achievements on Windows Live, and no ring of death with fully upgradable hardware! Microshaft have indeed shot themselves in the foot. You can bet Halo 3 will come to PC eventually. And ya know Crysis is never appearing on consoles. I'm now an official P-WiiS3-C gamer. Thanks MS........
