Joystiq impressions: Fracture (Xbox 360, PS3)

The story is essentially an extrapolation on the possible effects of global warming and genetic engineering 150 years into the future. With the entire middle portion of the US underwater, the East coast and Europe's cybernetic-centric Atlantic Alliance go to war against the West coast / East Asia's Republic of Pacific. While you only get to play as the Atlantic in single-player, both sides are playable in multiplayer. (The Pacific side will likely be your team for Fracture 2.) What about the rest of the world, such as South Africa? A LucasArts representative said with a smile, "to be answered in Fracture!"
If you remember the old game Scorched Earth, you'll recall there were weapons that cratered and created (via "sand piles") land, and Fracture takes much from that idea. Using special grenades you can lower and raise the land. Examples shown were creating a wall between enemies and lowering the earth to turn a crack in a wall into a new doorway, among others. You could even use it to make stairs to a higher ground. We were told that there is a floor and ceiling to terraforming the land, but that it is reportedly "forgiving." We saw within minutes a battlefield that was utterly devastated and warped, very impressive.

Many of the weapons shown capitalized on the terrain deforming concept. We saw a bangalore grenade launcher, that sends a grenade rippling through the ground like you would see Bugs Bunny dig in Looney Toons. The ground above it would raise a little, and the explosive would eventually pop its head out of the ground to claim its victim. A vortex could be created which acted just as its namesake implies, and also seen was a gun that created a large boulder from surrounding terrain and hurled it like a bowling ball.
We also saw an extreme use of terraforming with the the magma spike, which shot a column straight up into the sky. If you're standing on it, you get a new, higher platform. If you destroy it, the remnants serve as a hindrance to incoming traffic.
No co-op play, but there will be 16-player online multiplayer. Though we weren't allowed to play it at the appointment, we still very much enjoyed what we saw. (Fortunately, there is a multiplayer event tomorrow that we will be also covering.) Fracture is due out Summer 2008 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

So it's good? Nice. I thought it looked awesome from the video they showed on G4.
But when will LucasArts become interested in their adventure games again? x.x

Holy crap. I have to see video of this if it's out. You make this game sound like THE SHIT. Damn I must see this game.
driven2sin @ Jul 11th 2007 11:45PM
finally a reason to get me out of my DS for a bit and grab a (hopefully unbakeble) 360
this game does deserve its buzz
Spilt_Milk @ Jul 11th 2007 11:48PM
It is far enough away from release that they really should rethink not including co-op.
JonnyBoy2U @ Jul 11th 2007 11:46PM
This is the reason why I could care less about Haze which so far has shown nothing new or interesting when it comes to FPS.
Spilt_Milk @ Jul 11th 2007 11:47PM

I can't wait for this game. With Fracture, Force Unleashed, and next-gen Indy, LucasArts has quite a few nice games coming.

the problem with the video was that all the cool stuff was done with grenades.. which were slow and awkward to throw.
If you are gonna make a game around the concept of terrain deformation (which is in itself a cool idea) then why restrict it to awkward secondary weapons. Based the whole game around it.. and make the primary weapons control it.
t_m @ Jul 12th 2007 10:17AM
eg: in scorched earth and worms its the side effects of the primary weapons that effect the terrain.. you don't have to switch to some alternate "terrain grenades".

The plot of this game sounds loosely based on Camper Van Beethoven's "New Roman Times" album. I think that alone might make it worth checking out for me.

Doesn't anyone remember Treadmarks by Longbow Digital Art?
The idea of altering terrain real-time is not new. Its just rare that game developers actually think what happens when explosives meet logically destroyable objects.
ps : Tank Wars (Bomb) was better than scorched earth (with the exception of Scorched 3D)

oh no, Kansas underwater? I thought we'd be safe here from the horrors of global! I wonder how exactly they explain how the middle of the USA floods. On a different note, this game looks really cool, and I haev always believed that lucas arts can make some great non starwars games so I look forward to this one.
