Joystiq impressions: Halo 3 campaign

Thanks the the wonders of developer magic, we skipped those scenes which were denied us, and after seeing the cool new Halo 3 loading screen -- a blizzard of white pixels snowed vertically across the screen to form a computer model of a rotating Halo. It's a much faster loading screen than Halo 2 had ... we remember that thing taking forrrreeeeverrrrrr sometimes.

Once the game popped up, we noticed that it looked, frankly (no pun intended) a lot more gorgeous than the multiplayer beta. We're not talking Crysis levels of photorealistic details here, but pretty close. There's a canopy of green trees overhead, and lush water and rock/dirt environments underfoot, and it's very well-rendered. You creep up on a group of sleeping Grunts and proceed to take them out (if you choose), all stealthy-style. Soon enough, Frankie gets spotted and it's an all-out battle against Grunts, Jackals, and Brutes against his crew, which consists of a few Marines and the Arbiter.
We'll hand it to him, the guy clearly has some skill. Possibly because he's had a bit of experience with the game, mayhaps? He makes short order of the baddies, continues down the path, and ends up near an ocean, facing off against a Covenant dropship. Frankie quickly yanks a turret out of it's socket, and (after failing the first time) uses it to take out the offending ship. Pretty cool stuff, except that it only makes us itch as badly as a really powerful case of poison ivy to play the real thing ourselves. Must ... try ... to ... wait ... longer.
The HUD interface is familiar to everyone who played the multiplayer beta, shields recharge at the top of the screen, grenade count in the upper left, ammo and selected weapon in the upper right, etc. We weren't shown nearly enough to critique the single-player game, but so far it looks promising. We left Frankie to collapse into his gaming-induced coma, while we continued dreaming about possibly (hopefully?) being able to actually finish the fight. Sadly, we didn't get to take pictures, but look for more Halo 3 assets later this week.

I have on complaints about the graphics other than for Microsoft's number one franchise I expected it to slay, graphically, in every which way. Still it does (and always has) look good and I'm sure it plays on par with what Halo fans expect. Have fun this fall.

Got bloom?
Taylor Andre @ Jul 12th 2007 12:10AM
Me and m friend had a conversation about Halo 3 on MSN messenger about Halo 3 while we were watching the Microsoft Live Press briefing.
Taylor says:
so, how badly will halo 3 melt faces?
Juggernaut says:
ok
Juggernaut says:
if we have a face melting scale, Hiroshima would prolly be a 9.5 on a face melting scale
Juggernaut says:
agreed?
Taylor says:
sure
Juggernaut says:
ok so halo 3
Juggernaut says:
will prolly be like an 11
Taylor says:
lmao
(He meant to use Hiroshima in a comical way, not offensively)

Halo 3 is a rare example of a game that looks better in screenshot than in motion. I think it's the awkward animations that make it look so shitty whenever I see a video of it. Looking at teamxbox.com's HD screens, though, the game looks amazing. Above all, I'm sure it will be fun.
Jimmuy @ Jul 12th 2007 2:06AM

Corbin @ Jul 12th 2007 2:14AM

Once games finally hit photo realistic, good art direction might finally be important to gamers again because finally they might realize that realism is typically pretty boring to look at. Most movies don't even have photorealism because of the post processing they apply to give the movie a certain look because in the end, plain old photorealism is very very boring to the eye.
That is why I consider halo to be such a good looking game, it has graphical fidelity and good art direction that gives it a unique art style and a unique look. In short, its not brown and boring. Hell Gears of War and crysis don't look photo realistic, they still apply filters to give the game an overall final look that adds to the feel of the game.
perfectchaos @ Jul 12th 2007 10:22AM
so in other words it's like halo and halo 2 before it...with better graphics. which definitely isn't a bad thing...but i guess i expected a more from microsoft's premier franchise
Bill=Pwnt @ Jul 12th 2007 5:47PM
So what did you expect, Cooking Mama? This is Halo 3, it should naturally look like Halo 1 and Halo 2 with better graphics.
t_m @ Jul 12th 2007 10:37AM
Well.. since the Halo singleplayer campaign traditionally tends to just recycle the same 4 rooms and environments over and over again.. you can pretty much extrapolate from that demo time what the whole of the rest of the campaign will be like.
Heck, even XIII and Blue shift had better single player campaigns..
baby sea tuna @ Jul 12th 2007 11:29AM
While I agree that some of the cut & paste mapmaking in Halo: CE got a little stale, there were more than enough HOLY SHIT moments to make up for it (i.e. that first room of the Truth and Reconciliation, the Hidden Cartographer mission, and the final escape level.) And did you even play the second campaign?
As a fan, I'm definitely NOT worried.
Slaziman @ Jul 13th 2007 7:53PM
I NEED HALOS
Grindstone @ Jul 13th 2007 7:54PM
I'll just say it -- there's nothing to worry about. Let's face it, even if the graphics were not that great, Halo still has great gameplay and a solid storyline to keep it fun enough to buy and play. I thought the beta was "good enough" for me, so any improvement over that is all good news.
Graphics is only a portion of why Halo is such a good game. Billions of hours played emphasis this.
