The infamous Killzone 2 trailer of E3 2005. An unbelievable and completely improbable feat of gaming technology, quickly debunked as rubbish. This year, however, Sony returned with not only a real time demonstration of Killzone 2, but a playable tour as well. Before E3 had even begun, we knew that nothing could possibly prevent the tears, bitter or no, of the fiercely devoted.
With an uneasy hand, we present the collapsing of the universe: GameVideos' Killzone 2 comparison. The original CGI fest going toe-to-toe with the real deal. It's not entirely fair, however, as the real time video tends to feature the marines flying around for too long, but that won't stop the endless debates.
[Update - For those who just can't get enough, GameTrailers also released a comparison of their own, in high-def no less.]
OMG shut up with the "Halo Killer," "Halo what?" bullshit. It looks good, doesn't mean it has a memorable story or characters you can care about, or if its even fun. Besides, Killzone and Halo only have being FPSes in common. They are totally different kinds of FPS. If you want to compare Killzone to other FPSes, it would be more suitable to compare it Half Life series (similar bad guys), Resistance (feel), Crysis or Call of Duty 4. Those have more in common with Killzone than Halo. Halo is much more cartoony (Grunts and general chatter is humorous and lightens the moon) and the games aren't about the graphics, just fun. Metroid is even more unrealistic from an art standpoint, but its still damn fun. Gritty brown and gray graphics don't make a game more fun than another.
Wait for the game, play Halo 3 as well and then decide which you prefer. I don't think it should be about graphics between the two, because frankly Crysis owns both of them, as does Call of Duty 4 (as seen at the 360 E3 presentation)
3, Halo 3, and I strongly believe it will be the game to beat in terms of online multiplayer, gameplay, sales, and longevity.
Please don't tell me you bought this comparison video. The amount of geometry used on one trailer vs the other is vast. Likewise, I don't think the person doing the comparison realizes what volumetric fire really is. While the video on the left does in fact look like volumetric fire, the one on the right shows an effect that resembles volumetric fire, but clearly isn't. Don't get me wrong, the trailer looks good, and the game seems fun (just from the looks of it) but perhaps we should ask a 3D effects artist to do the comparison next time.
By comparison, the new trailer looks kind of better considering it is in fact, in real time. In addition, it is a bit more active in execution than the last one. Visually though, they came damn close.
They say real time. But that just means that the video was produced on the ps3. Real time can mean anything, they need to specify(if the didn't), if what we are infact watching is what we will be playing, if the buttons on the controller make that happen.
But on that note I have no idea what they mean, didn't even watch the presentation and don't much care to bother. I hear E3 was a bit of a dud this year anyway.
But if you think about all yhe games you have played, they often look a lot better in the in-engine cutscenes than in the gameplay.. as th cutscenes don't have to worry about AI, etc..
I thought it was reasonably close.. but they definitely cut down on the complexity of the city in the flyover.. and the fire effects are nothing even close to the CGI version. (infact they look worse than some current games..)
Ok, Yeah Halo will kill Killzone. Sorry Fanboys it's true. Sony has never and never will deliver on what it promises and I even Beta tested the original Killzone. So, So, Sorry. Rip Killzone 2.
So you beta tested KillZone, which by default means you are an expert on KillZone. Under this assumption, I am going to cower away from KillZone 2, because, obviously, you have much more experience with this title than anyone else, including the journalists who have seen it demonstrated.
victor your the one arguing with the fanboys.just watch and laugh at them talking.your opinion is yours let the fanboys chat.they have no life probably
They did a damn good job with the game i must say, no one thought they would get even close to the trailer, but the proof is right there, its fucking very close. Good job Sony and Guerilla.
Although it isn't a fair comparison visually (It isn't please, get serious) but my GOD am I impressed by how close they came! The detail is just....my god! I'm also stunned how well the Helghast(spelling?) die!
Little disappointed to see that the colors are pretty much gone (even the 05 trailer had more vibrant colors)--nothing but next gen gray and black as usual. This leads to one of the most depressing maps I've ever seen...which is what they were probably going for but...jesus gimmie at least a green in there or something. (makes me wonder if they kept it that dark and gray to avoid showing some inferiorities, would it look as good showing a bright and sunny day? just food for thought)
If you can't admit it looks damn interesting then YOU sir are a fanboy.
After seeing this I must say that I will bite on a PS3 when I can have the following with it. -Metal Gear Solid 4 -Gran Turismo 5 -Killzone 2 (pending good objective reviews) -A conroller that rumbles -Other 3rd party titles (UT3, Assassin's Creed, GTA IV, etc)
I noticed the color thing to. Though, it seems it was done purposely. EVERYTHING is grey, except the lights. The gunfire lights up the room with a red tint, if you look at some of the scenes you see a bright rainbow color effect from something that looks rather nifty, but all the models, all the surrounding areas are ALL grey... I like the effect, but I think it gives the wrong impression.
Yeah I don't think I'll be buying to many more games adopting this color scheme. Gears of War was bearable with the color atleast, but that is bland and lifeless. Seriously I want a FPS as good looking as this or gears with Super Paper Mario like color scheme. How sweet would that be. I almost didn't get Gears because of the color in reality. The enemies look so lifeless. Hopefully you atleast get to know them a little before you blast em. Nothing worst than an epic shooter where you get no satisfaction from killing something you know nothing about. That's what I liked about Halo, they were a little humorous and had a certain charm to each of em. They get scared or run away or pissed of and show it. Killzone did a terrible job of the people they chose as the badguys. But visually it looks great.
I am thinking the absence of color may be intentional because processing and displaying a wide array of colors is taxing on the system. Removing certain colors or limiting to only a few with shades in each frame may have allowed room for a tad more detail.
so what colors do you suggest for war? pink and neon green .. no seriously, what mood do you suggest then? a beach with palm trees (crytek) .. yeah totally killer .. this is as close as you come to a post apocalyptic theme .. i take it your not going like the palette of COD4 then yeah?
LOL, I am sorry, but I had to stop the video as soon as the in-game footage claimed to be using "volumetric fire." I'm in computer graphics, and even if you're not, it's not too hard to see that this is simply a stack of particles, even with the same old overlap problems we've been seeing for years (note the fire in the distance being drawn on top of the fire closer to us).
Sorry, but it's 2 Years later, and it's the same old BS from Sony.
The only people looking for a Halo-killer are Halo fanboys. No one else cares enough about Halo to compare anything against it.
So, of course, nothing will ever beat Halo; non-halo fanboys dont give a sh!t and Halo fanboys will go mid-evil on game that remotely threatens their reason for buying a Halo360.
No, Ian, I don't think it's just Halo fans. I do believe there are Sony fans out there who are waiting to say, "Sure, you have Halo, BUT WE GOT [insert game name here] WHICH IS SO MUCH BETTER."
LOL This is AWESOME to do to Sony. It is fair simply because they have to be called out for the liars that they are. This game looks so average yet the true Sony boys YET AGAIN think it will be a Halo killer like they thought Killzone 1 would be. Looks wise it is still blown away by Gears of War which has been around awhile. Killzone 2 will have to beat Halo 3 and Gears before the fanboys can cram it down our throats.
There have been lots of games before that had bad sales but were actually great games.
Seriously, why can't you just buy what you like and stop beating other people up because they bought something else. I wouldn't buy a game that had snooty assholes like you backing it up.
FYI its #1 on IGN too. Just sayin' more facts to suck on. Personally i never thought anything would be more popular than halo 3 this year .. sales aside .. just buzz wise .. maybe we are halo 3ed out?
It really, really highlights the differences in gameplay shown.
The gameplay in the CGI one is insane. It's very randomized, lots of amazing animations and interactions. The gameplay from the in-game one is missing all of that. All of it. Every tiny piece.
you people realize you're arguing over CONSOLE shooters right? let's sit you down across the LAN table from a seasoned CS:S veteran and see how you stack up. and if it's story you're after, you people don't know about HL2 simply because your version isn't due out for another 2 months. Halo was never great. buy a decent rig. and for the love of god learn to shoot without auto-aim.
OK, as a fairly unbiased person (I have personally never played Halo or Killzone), I have to say it looks good, but generic. While certainly not up to the complete "bullshot" Sony doled out in '05, it still looks very pretty, but I think that the usual "bombed out tenements" levels that so many FPSs are made up of, and populated with your generic shock troops and mecha-soldiers, are very stale genre cliches. It's kinda like the best missionary sex w/ the lights out you've ever had. It's great sex, but generic sex. It kinda makes me sad that in our "next-gen" phases, art direction is starting to suffer. Realism is cool and all, but there needs to be more pizzazz.
Halo, from what I can tell, at least gives out some interesting creature designs. It's your traditional sci-fi shooter, but it's got some color and cool visual ideas out there.
I know I'm opening myself up to massive flaming here, so I'll reiterate that I have no bias. I have moderate interest in both, but neither one really gives me that "Oh god I need this NOW" feeling that a truly original game can give me.
Note: there's no reason to start an argument on missionary sex here, it's just a simile.
I find it funny that people are still trying to bash killzone... face it the game lives up to the target render in almost every aspect... the fire looks poorer but still looks decent, the guys mouths look little strange, but everything else looks as good or better.
the xbots are just mad because halo3 single player doesnt look much better then multiplayer.
I dont care what ANYONE thinks. i still strongly believe that halo 3 beats it out technically, with it TEXTURES (this is a big one. one nonexistant in KZ2), Global HDR lighting (a first in any game), art style, AND SCALE. (SCALE IS A BIG ONE. one that normally would not make it fair to compair a linear FPS to one on a scale such as halo 3. however halo 3 still manages to keep up in graphics or better. in my opinion.)
And this comparison proves nothing. Heres an analogy. If im looking at a brick wall in real life, and at the same time looking at a picture of that brick wall, they are identical, however one has the poly's and one has ZERO poly's. not that KZ 2 has zero polys, no its extremely impressive and beat my expectations but this comparison means squat.
I think you are crazy.... I havent seen any thing from any of the halo3 trailers that show an advantage in lighting, but the KZ2 trailer lighting was amazing especially when the lightning comes down. and there was so much more detail in the environment in KZ2.
im not saying its ognna be a halo killer, because it wont... halo is an unstoppable force and no matter what if halo3 doesnt look as good as people expect, it will be a success, where as KZ2 is based of just a decent game from PS2.
but from the two trailers i would say KZ2 looks better graphics wise.
thing is, this game will only look better visually and they will be adding more animations. So it will probably exceed the trailer when it is finally finished.
Why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch on this? If you have an Xbox 360, then Halo 3 will continue its tradition of being the top tier FPS for it. Killzone 2 looks great and will hopefully be kick-ass in its gameplay for PS3 gamers. Comparing the two is just a waste of time.
