Firaxis wouldn't be against Alpha Centauri II
While talking with Firaxis about Civilization: Beyond the Sword and its space scenarios, it had to be asked whether we'll ever see the return of Alpha Centauri and its cast of characters bent on controlling the living planet. Producers from Firaxis and some representatives from 2K weren't opposed to the idea.Yes, Brian Reynolds (Big Huge Games), who designed the original game with Sid Meier has moved on and then there is the tricky issue that EA owns the rights. However, the Firaxis crew said if EA wouldn't be opposed to giving that up, there might be an opportunity for a sequel. It's the best and only chance for Firaxis to ever return gamers to Alpha Centauri. One producer for Firaxis turned around and said, "We could make 'Sid Meier's Space-something,' we have a great group to do that, but it just wouldn't be the same." No, it really wouldn't. Come on EA, it's not like you're doing anything with the series, work out a deal.

I'm all for it.
"if EA wouldn't be opposed to giving that up"
There goes that idea.

Holy Shif Motherluckers!
Okay Firaxis here's what you do: Make the same exact game. Add 3 dimensions. "Weather machine". Real-time global warming shif. Assassination strikes on rival leaders. Succeeding rivals. Sentient beings for morality questions. Every major action generated in a resulting optional cut-scene done cinematically. Inter galactic invaders forcing cooperation with rivals for sake of planet. Intelligence-hacking puzzles. Spore like development of cultures to simulate economies. And finally customization based online play.
AlphCent's was probably the only demo that made me steal money to buy the game when I realized how addicted I was (12 years old).

What a great game that was. I loved my color fold-out skill tree.

AC is the game that got me on to turnbased strategy, if it wasn't for this I would've missed out on some awesome games. Argh come on Firaxis buy those rights now!

Sid Meier just loves to kick my wallet in the nuts!!!

I still play this game. Another AC would be truly amazing.

Somehow I read this title as:
Newsflash! For-profit company has no problems with guaranteed money!
Of course Firaxis would like another Alpha Centauri. It was a great game in the first place and another would make them a truckload of cash.

EA could just make the current game run under contemporary operating systems without bugs. Sell the current game at $50 merely for the curtsey of a re-compile. Of course, they would have have to rent Brad Oliver from Apple for an hour or two. Still, if they still have the source code, Alpha Centauri 2 would be an excuse to mint money.

rolipoli-
I think you hit the nail on the head (and into the coffin). Civ in space would resemble something very akin to what EA is already developing... Spore!
And EA's even cribbed the Civ IV director for Spore. Why EA would just turn around and give their own competition's franchise back is beyond me. (sobs)
