Overheard@E3: Analysts like Rock Band

The Rock Band and Bethesda parties were crazy last night -- and everyone is ready to go back to work this morning. The analysts who look into their crystal ball and tell us the future seem to be liking Rock Band, the next game from Harmonix. This morning, outside the EA room at LeMerigot, a cluster of analysts were talking and one mentioned the game, "Rock Band, I was watching them play. This guy, on the drums, I mean, you have to be good."

This game high cost included, will sell.
I can imagine many a drunk party where this game will entertain (mainly friends making complete asses out of themselves) for hours on end.
I think Harmonix has another winner on it's hand.

It would be cool if some sort of nano bomb would kill all analysts.

I'm sure as hell interested in it (even at the prices people have been estimating), even moreso after reading they'll be doing FULL ALBUMS. This has been my dream since I first played Guitar Hero. Boston's self-titled debut would be amazing, I really hope they wind up doing it.

I'm also interested in the idea of full albums. Appetite for Destruction would be awesome. However, until the price is revealed, I'm going to remain cautious.

I just don't see how the drumset is going to sell well. Less people want to play the drums, they will be expensive, and they take up space. Just get real drums.
KeeferMadness @ Jul 12th 2007 1:34PM
I think the whole "get a real (insert instrument here)" comment needs to be done away with once and for all. I have a drum kit and a good portion of my friends have guitars. We all can't wait for Rock Band.
cheeky @ Jul 12th 2007 1:38PM
damnit Jake! Don't turn this into another, "well if your going to play the video game, you might as well get the real instrument." Getting a drum set by yourself, or playing a video game drumset while computer character play Enter Sandman behind you are two completely different things. And you say they take up space? More than a real drumset? lol...
Michael McGuire @ Jul 12th 2007 1:53PM
What's interesting about this comment is that the developers are saying that if you can beat the song on Hard/Expert on the drums, you could probably do it on a real drum set. This is obviously not true for the guitar portion. So comments like "get real drums" are even more stupid for this game because in effect, they are "real" drums.
However, real drums would be more expensive, not teach you how to play, and not capable of going online to play with my friends. I think I'll stick with the Rock Band version.

My Analysis (based only on this screenshot) :
In the next six months, gamers will grow so completely sick of developers' overuse of bloom, like cel-shading before it, that we will cease to see for almost a year. Only then will it return and be used in a moderately sane facility, like cel-shading is now.
So sayest the me.

Analyst liked the PS3 chances against the Wii too. Screw Analysts.
Shagittarius @ Jul 12th 2007 1:40PM

Crono @ Jul 12th 2007 1:55PM
LOL at Shagi

Of course analysts like Rock Band. What's not to like?

"However, real drums would be more expensive, not teach you how to play"
Wait, so playing real drums doesn't teach you how to play real drums? That's a new one...
Playing almost anything in rhythm - whether it's a fake drum set and a pair of drumsticks or a couple of frisbees on a table with some #2 pencils - will teach you how to play real drums to some extent. Playing a basic beat is not that hard; it's staying in perfect rhythm that's hard. So this comment from Harmonix is really not very extraordinary. But obviously, nothing beats playing real drums to learn to play drums (like any other instrument), so I am not sure what you were getting at in your comment above.

Im iffy on the music selection. I know it's "Rock" band but for karaoke my music taste is not quite the same. Also, I find myself not recognizing a lot of the songs in the last few aka guitar hero 2, 80's, what's been announced for rock band so far etc.
SuperMario21 @ Jul 12th 2007 2:15PM
Its funny that people that will buy this game could buy a Nintendo Wii at the same cost!! This game will be very expensive to buy and its not going to sell alot of units.
Jake @ Jul 12th 2007 2:40PM
Damn, a little backlash to my knocking the drumset. I still don't think that many people are going to want to purchase that drumset. Maybe it collapses into something more manageable.
Also, with the guitar, you are getting a way easier fake instrument that allows you to hit notes as fast as a real guitarist. With that drumkit, you are hitting round pads with drumsticks to a beat. How the fuck would that be easier/harder/different than doing it in real life?
I don't like it. Try to keep your panties in a bunch.
Abscissa @ Jul 12th 2007 3:11PM
Sorry to nitpick, but I believe the phrase is "*Don't* get your panties in a bunch"
Burritoclock @ Jul 12th 2007 3:00PM
Well to each his own, personally I have never been as excited about a game in a LONG time, and I have gamed for a loooong time. If the PS3 had me a quarter of this excited I would have bought two of them by now.
Crono @ Jul 12th 2007 3:18PM
Ditto, man!
Imadogg99 @ Jul 12th 2007 6:42PM
I love it when joystiq overhears stuff. Eavesdropping rules!
