Xbox 360 gets backwards compatibility update
Taking a moment away from E3, Major Nelson updated his blog to give the latest information on Xbox 360 backwards compatibility. The whole list of new titles can be found after the break, and you can always go to Xbox's site to get the full list. This would typically be the part where we'd say something about how silly it is that the Xbox 360 has backwards compatibility issues in the first place, but now he's not the only guy in town with a problem. There aren't that many original Xbox games that are still worth worrying about. Our concern is more with the new version of the PS3 which will have "limited backwards compatibility," especially when there was nothing limited about its compatibility before. Oh well, if you're planning on getting the PS3 and you have a favorite old game on the system, make sure to check it will still work -- or got get yourself a current PS3 model while you still can.

Where is Rallisport 2?
Tony @ Jul 13th 2007 12:35AM
The question to end all questions. This is the only game I've been hoping for since they started doing this.
Until they make a 360 sequel or get this working, I cannot be happy.
Jypson @ Jul 13th 2007 12:38AM
Thats the game I look for every time. Dirt is pretty cool, but it's no RalliSport Challenge 2 :?(
Kritz @ Jul 12th 2007 11:26PM
No Battlefield 2?
I refuse to pay $110 AUD to buy a game I already own. :\

Weird, Mechassault 2 was made playable by the last BC update...but is listed as new with this one...

I have been called a PS3 fanboy before...I may *LOVE* the sheer sexiness of the console, but I am more of a M$-hateboy because of the sheer amount of nonsense spewed by xbots
Just to get a few facts straight
1. PS3 has BC for well over 50% of its library (1200 titles) several times the number for 360 and including MOST of the big titles - which means 80% or more of old PS2 DVDs WILL play
2. Its limited ONLY compared to the launch model - which had a PS2 chip. Sony was always clear that it would use software emulation and included the PS2 chip until they achieved significant BC (unlike 360). It would be lovely to have 100% BC but if YOU had a choice of paying USD30 extra for this, would you? Just for some obscure titles?
But facts dont really matter do they - 360 played just Halo 2 at launch and maybe 300 titles now, but its the PS3 which has "limited backward compatibility".
Just like the Killzone 2 trailer was a lie, MGS4 coming to 360, PS3 games look inferior (Dirt?) and PS3 has no games (I think about 10 exlusives in 1st year now including the timed Haze / UT3 versus ONE for 360 in 1st year - Gears - which is no longer an exlcuive)
Rubang B @ Jul 12th 2007 11:58PM
Dude, your name's rfom. We get it.
Exo @ Jul 13th 2007 12:03AM
too bad that even with all that ps3 isnt worth buying yet, somthing sales figures agree with.
BPM @ Jul 13th 2007 12:58AM
The big problem with Xbox emulation is how vastly different the Xbox and 360 architectures are.
Xbox had an Intel CPU and NVIDA GPU.
360 has an IBM CPU and ATI GPU.
So, many different calls are made to the chips and whatnot.
With PS3, it originally had the EE built-in, making PS2 playback almost as good as playing it on a PS2 (and perhaps better, since upscaling was added). And even with the models that have software emulation only, I'm sure Sony is able to work with the original code better, since they probably had a tighter grip on the rights to the parts (Microsoft, however, had a real fight with NVIDIA over the GPUs).
lostprophet @ Jul 13th 2007 2:36AM
It's still exclusive. Your PC runs most likely MICROSOFT Windows. Hmmm... don't they make the Xbox?
UT is timed exclusive which will makes it's way to both Xbox/PC.
dave @ Jul 13th 2007 9:56AM
One exclusive for the 360 in its first year? Who's spewing nonsense now? What do you call PDZ, PGR3, and GRAW. If you're going to count Haze and VF5 as a PS3 exclusives you may as well count Oblivion and RB6 360 exclusives. Idiot.
Digi Smalls @ Jul 13th 2007 1:35PM
no rfom,
what you've been called in the past was an idiot.
by fanboys on BOTH sides. you've turned everybody into an rfom HATEboy.
choice remarks by you: sony doesn't "buy exclusivity" (NCSOFT), doesn't "buy famous developers" (um, INSOMNIAC, NAUGHTY DOG, FACTOR 5???)and they don't "just have scifi first person shooters" right *R:FOM?* (are you gonna change your name to Unreal Killzone Haze?)
your "facts" are always wrong. and when challenged you always disappear. classic troll.

Rubang B @ Jul 12th 2007 11:56PM
It's so cute when you guys fight over backwards compatibility issues without mentioning the Wii's 100%, the DS's 100%, the GBA's 100%, and even the GBC's 100%. Having anything come out now with "BC issues" is such a joke when Nintendo's been doing it right since 1998.
Dave @ Jul 13th 2007 12:36AM
Well, BC is easy when you don't do much to change the underlying hardware.
Rubang B @ Jul 13th 2007 3:06AM
Damn it took somebody almost an hour for that comeback? I set that one up for free.

horngreen @ Jul 13th 2007 12:10AM
So they made Moto GP2 BC this time and BOY what a stellar effort it is. The right trigger is MISSING from the controller set up and map screen and worse yet is a loud constant pop noise the whole time you're riding. And yes MS where the hell is Rallisport 2. I have DIRT and it is over hyped and the reviews scores are too high and it is no Rallisport 2.
horngreen @ Jul 13th 2007 12:13AM

This would offend me if Nintendo made games with any edge to them. I mean how long can you swing the remote with grandma before your smile gets stale? "Oh boy I can play Super Monkey Footbal Fuck on my Wii!"
Rubang B @ Jul 13th 2007 12:21AM
Not all Wii games involve swinging, and in fact, I was referring to Nintendo systems with backwards compatibility all the way back to the Game Boy Color, which also didn't involve swinging (except for one game: Kirby's Tilt 'n' Tumble).
Super Monkey Ball is made by Sega, and has also had a Deluxe version on the XBox, so it's not entirely a Nintendo-exclusive series, but thanks for trying, better luck naming a Nintendo game next time!
It's not hard, here's a hint: it rhymes with Wario.
Kliend @ Jul 13th 2007 12:15AM
I have no idea what the big deal about backwards compatibility is. whatev.

Debikul @ Jul 13th 2007 12:27AM
Hmm..
I'm seeing a few comments bitching about people ragging the 360 about the BC. Why?
The way I see it Microsoft is expanding the BC list while Sony is cutting theirs.
Explain to me how this is a good move after your initial console supported more games for BC than the newest one does?
And Nintendo...well, they just kick Sony and Microsoft in the ass when it comes to BC.
End of discussion.
Biphster @ Jul 13th 2007 7:38AM
Hmmm... Tell me please where I put my NES, SNES and N64 carts in the Wii? And where does my Gameboy/Gameboy colour cart go in the DS??
Sonys backwards compatibility is almost 100% for ALL their machines.
The only back compat Nintendo has with home console is GC to Wii, and thats not saying much considering they are basically the same machine. The best they have ever done is with GB to GBA and GBA to DS, i.e 2 generations at a time. Sony have 3 generations running in PS3.
The Euro PS3 is at about 90% now with software, each firmware update had been including a SHIT load of games and improving on ones already emulated. And when Sony says the game works, it works properly, hell even when they say it has glitches its hardly anything. MS version of "Works" is that it loads, fuck if it plays properly or not.
I own 23 PS2 games and 25 PS1 games all of them now work apart from Eyetoy Chat video window freezes and Vib Ribbon freezes on the first level. So my personal collection is nigh on 100%.
Don't worry USA, your new PS3's aren't as bad as you might think. Every major game is running fine already. And with the recent firmware upscaling, they look mighty fine too on that HDTV.
Rwing90 @ Jul 13th 2007 12:32AM
Still no Deus Ex Invisible War. My original Xbox didn't like the ending so I never got to finish. :(
LordMinogue @ Jul 13th 2007 12:32AM
I think anyone who is terribly worried about BC still has their Xbox around. I rarely pop in an old game over the newer titles.
BC is a privilege, not a right.
sheppy @ Jul 13th 2007 12:37AM
No Timesplitters 3....
What really sucks? Wanted to play that so badly thr other night. Bought it for Xbox purely for the XBox Live at the time. So if I bought it for PS2 or Gamecube, I would have been able to play it....
DckPump @ Jul 13th 2007 12:45AM
Who the hell cares? MS admitted to having 11.6 million faulty consoles, granted I have one, but why freakin bother updating it when you cant get it to work half the time! http://www.crn.com.au/story.aspx?CII...&src=site-marq
Ska Oreo @ Jul 13th 2007 1:23AM
Wow nice job troll.
If that piece of information is true troll then why:
1.Is there nothing in the link that you provided
2. isn't their any news about this on Kotaku or any other major media outlet.
DckPump @ Jul 13th 2007 1:28AM
Here ya go prick.
Software giant admits there are 11.6 million faulty consoles, which it will have to fix.
Microsoft has admitted that every one of the 11.6 million Xbox 360 consoles sold in the past 19 months suffers from a design flaw that could cause the device to fail.
The firm will extend the warranty coverage from one to three years to compensate consumers, but does not plan to instate a recall or exchange programme.
Microsoft gaming chief Robbie Bach claimed in a conference call with financial analysts that the design issues surfaced recently.
"In the past couple of months we started to see significant increases in repair requests and call requests and significant attention from people," he said.
Microsoft did not disclose the exact nature of the problems, but said that it had made the necessary design changes and that units currently in stock will be upgraded.
The extended warranty period is limited to hardware failures indicated by three flashing red lights on the console. Users of consoles suffering from such problems are entitled to free repairs and shipping.
Microsoft estimated that the repairs will cost the company US$1.05bn to US$1.15bn, spilt evenly between the higher than expected return rates for existing consoles under the one-year warranty, and future returns under the extended warranty period.
Ska Oreo @ Jul 13th 2007 3:02AM
Ok then douchbag then that leads us to number 2. Why is it that only CRN and the Inquirer only have this "breaking" news, yet there has been nothing about it in any major media outlet (CNN,Gamespot,Kotaku/Joystiq)?
Ska Oreo @ Jul 13th 2007 3:03AM
Sounds a little fishy doncha think?
Markusdragon @ Jul 13th 2007 3:40AM
So basically your argument is that the software engineers should just give up because the hardware engineers made a massive error?
Jitty @ Jul 13th 2007 1:05AM
Why is the ps3's software BC so under rated? Last time I checked 1500+ games worked without any problems. And sony is only going to give you more updates so more games will work!! It's simply not comparable to, what, 300 xbox games that work on the 360?
Jitty @ Jul 13th 2007 1:05AM
edit: the 1500+ are just ps2 games, I think all ps1 games work with Software BC...
Ska Oreo @ Jul 13th 2007 1:29AM
uhh who cares? Are you really going to use the ps3's BC as a way to prove the ps3 is better than 360. While it's nice to play games from the past. I think most people would rather focus on games that are coming now.
Jitty @ Jul 13th 2007 2:39AM
No, Ska Oreo, it's not any way to prove which is better. I've just been hearing a lot of people putting down the 80GB version of the ps3 because it only has Software BC and I hate it! Just in this blog post they are relating 360's BC to the ps3's software BC. It's somewhat ridiculous! The ps3's BC is at least 5 times better; both literally and figuratively (not that it makes the ps3 better though)
DrXym @ Jul 13th 2007 4:44AM
The PS3 software BC works just fine. People who bitch about it are almost always people who have never used it. It does have incompatibilities and notable omissions but the majority of titles that people own and want to play are supported. It's also worth noting that it's software assisted emulation since the PS2's GS chip (the bit that does the graphics) is still there. That means the PS3 is emulating the instruction set of the EE, plus a little bit of hardware, but most of the rendering is still done in hardware. This is why emulation is flawless for many titles and is going to get better over time.
Jitty @ Jul 13th 2007 1:08AM
Also, that "limited BC" is not just on the new 80GB version. I'm pretty sure it says the same thing on my 5 months old 60GB ps3...
polly @ Jul 13th 2007 1:09AM
I'd really like to see the Capcom Classics, Midway Arcade Treasures & Taito Legends games become bc...but we all know that won't happen...stupid Live Arcade goldmine.
EMaster @ Jul 13th 2007 1:14AM
Outrun! Niiice! Now I can save my quarters!
Mack @ Jul 13th 2007 2:09AM
i dont understand why the Wii is so damn popular. i just dont see the entertainment in so few buttons and waving your arm around in slightly different motions.
