As journalists, what does it feel like to learn that interviewees lie to your face or not mention kinda important facts like the price cut is for two more weeks only?

Peter,

If they sell their existing stock of 60's in two weeks, they will have a collective executive orgasm. Not to mention that the PS3 then will be within 3 million of the current Xbox sales figure.

While I give no props to Sony marketing, I have to say this move is fairly realistic. No one wants an iPhone is the iPhone 10GB with Turnip Thwapping technology is coming up two months from now at the same price.

So you drop the price of the older product, and leave the newer product with a bundle that might attract some buyers. When the old stock is sold out, you drop the newer model to the same slot. If they don't do this, then calling them lying farkwits has some validity. But if that's the plan, then it's really not a raw deal or demonic intent.

Sometimes you have to say "look at the Wookie" because nitpicky folks that gauge their e-penis by the number of "gigs" in their drive will start crying foul even at a normal practice in electronics.

In all honesty, a majority of the content here makes a lot of sense from the business perspective. Sure it's all being twisted positively (like every company does), but it was all pretty true.

They were definitely long-winded, but a good read. Thanks Joystiq!

The 10-year lifecycle is great spin, and it's possible. We aren't talking 10 years of being the dominant console, but 10 years from birth to death. PSOne gave the Playstation new life and it sold well. I expect the PS2 to keep going. The PS3 could do the same.

The problem I see with the idea of starting off slow is that without an install base in the beginning it is going to be nearly impossible to build an install base in year two or three, especially when most of your consumers are moving to competitors' consoles in the meantime.

You didn't see Sony coming out with a $600 PS2 and saying - just wait, this thing will be alive in 10 years.

Yeah dude the 10 year life cycle is being approached with the PS2 right now. The PS3 is just starting that earlier. I don't see any reason for games to look much better than the PS3/360 generation IMO. After this games will cost too much for the artists and 3d designers to build to the higher standards of the next generation after this one. That's why I believe Sony is on the mark that this new generation is going to last even longer than the last. The PS2 will end off at 8-9 years. PS3 10 years no doubt.

The big question is, is the 360 poised to continue competitively down the road, and the same to the Wii? To me, those two systems have big warning signs of being dead in 4-5 years. I liked my investment in my PS2. I no doubt will like the investment in my PS3.

Kaz did say some good points but the 2 are definitely out of touch with what made their first 2 PlayStations (or previous console generations) a success!

Quoting:
"its not about how many units we've sold here or there"

Comment: Then how are U going to persuade 3rd parties that making games (espexcially exclusives) for you machine is viable????

Quoting:

"I guess at this point the SIXAXIS controller is something that we're comfortable with"

Comment: What about the consumer's opinions?

" but if we're outsold in the first 8 months, its much less of a concern than to be outsold for the first 8 years. The other thing that we have going for us is the perspective that we're looking at a 10 year product life-cycle. I'm not saying that our competitors aren't, but the thing our competitors don't have is two viable product platforms in the market. So we get to add up the revenue and the sales that we've sold on the PlayStation 2 with the revenue and the sales that we've sold on the PlayStation 3, and while I'd like think that [users] buy a PlayStation 2 today and they buy a PlayStation 3 tomorrow"

I thought the 2 platforms were PS3 and PSP... what is going on with PSP?!?!?!

10 year life cycle??? Microsoft & NIN won't let that happen and it may not be a good money making strategy in my books!!!

Users who were buying PS2s probably bought it for the good price and available games (just what Wii and X360 have got better) !

#1 worst Sony lie: The 10-year lifecycle that has never existed. WTF. I think the 32-bit market had kind of been dead awhile by 2000-fucking-five.

The Playstation 2 market though MIGHT actually still be strong though by 2010 by virtue of its sheer numbers and the Playstation 3's unattractiveness.

Umm, hate to break it to you but among the last PSOne games ever made was Madden... 2005. When Sony finally pulled the plug in 2005 on the PSOne, it was still selling an average of 30 a week in Japan. And the original Playstation was showing signs of slowing much faster than the PS2 currently is. Not to mention PS2, this time around, as the advantage of the Wii. Two similarly powered systems (similarly enough to make easy ports) that will feed each others libraries for quite some time. I honestly expect PS2 to last 12 years.

I hate interviewees that do that. All of their answers had about a paragraph of info that was made practically unreadable by 6 paragraphs of running in circles. Ugh. It sounded like people that aren't quite sure what the hell they are doing or how to answer the question properly.

I am also sick of hearing all this "10 year cycle" and "once customers see the value in the technology". I don't fraking get it. What exactly is so special about the technology? It plays blu-ray movies and next gen video games. It is like they are saying we are too stupid to see the "potential" in the console. We can see what it fucking is. We aren't blind, assholes.

They talk like we are all supposed to assume their games are vastly superior and absolutely can't be done on a 360 because the technology isn't there. Yet, we haven't seen anything to prove it. Fuck, by the time a game releases on the PS3 that looks better than anything on 360, if that ever happens, the PC will have them both pwned. Look at the review sites. Resistance "couldn't be done on 360". My ass. I am not that stupid.

The PS3 is a fine system. It is worth the purchase if you don't already have a 360, really want blu-ray, need to own all systems, and/or just prefer the Playstation brand. But it irritates me when they talk about it like it is just this uber-gaming system that towers over the competition. It is so arrogant.

It sure as hell won't have the best games by the end of the year. Perhaps when it hits its 3rd or 4th holiday season it will have caught up. Just in time for next gen to begin. ;)

I don't want the same console for 10 years, especially after its technology is a year old to begin with. And I don't want one where I can't actually see how much better than the competition it is because I am not smart enough and just need to take their word for it. I want one after 5 or 6 years that pwns the graphics, physics, and overall capabilities of the last one-three I bought.

@jake: "But it irritates me when they talk about it like it is just this uber-gaming system that towers over the competition. It is so arrogant."

True, but find me a system that doesn't talk like they tower over the competition. Sony has a problem with tact and timing, but they act no differently then Microsoft as Nintendo nips at their heels.

It irritates gamers when a patently false statement is made, but no one respects the wuss that modestly says "shucks, we're not as good as y'all, but we have a certain charm that may appeal to a niche market."

Wonder why executives don't talk plainly most of the time? It's an evolved defensive mechanism against consumer predators, competitors for mating, and ecology destroying rumor mongers. Darwin in action.

Wow, either I'm taking the 10-year life the wrong way or everybody else is. I always assumed they meant 10 years total. I don't expect them to just sit on the PS3 as their dominant console for 10 years.

The PS2 is on year 7. Judging by the releases, the console could live for another year or two. And THAT console didn't start off so tech-driven.

the interview probably should have gone a little something more like this:

Kaz:"Well, i have been with the playstation brand a while now, and as you can tell over the last 12 years we have made the brand a startling success."

Jack:"But, as you all know, with an electronics giant such as Sony, you can't stay stagnant, you must constantly change and conform to the market. Then we saw that the Sony brand had shaped the market and it was literally in our controll."

Kaz:"Yes, we ran the video games industry since around 2002."

Jack:"So this is where i got the great idea, and instead of just being the "same old successful Playstation", how about we test just how much we controlled the video game market and made a PC/Console hybrid, with a matching price tag, with some of the downfalls that PC gamers have to overcome."

Kaz:"Yes, anyone can be a success, but to run the video game industry with a total failure, that was Sony's new challenge."

Jack:"We recognize that the public is not taking to the console as quickly as we had hoped, but we also recognize people have not gotten second jobs to be able to afford the system, as we suggested. This is a problem, but we think that with all the money the PS3 is losing, Sony will have large cutbacks, and there will be a large influx of jobs available at sony for all those who want to work for a PS3."

Kaz:"Thats our Credo."

Jack:"See, we even made T-shirts with it on it."

Good observation vidGuy

The problem, however, is that it can't survive for another 9.5 years if it is already dying down right now!

Technologically PS3 is an achievement, but financially it is a huge flop and the only hope for it's salvation (ie. good exclusive games worth the extra price) is late and seems likely to tarry even longer!

I completely agree. Sony's current strategy doesn't poise the PS3 well for the years to come. If they don't drop the price (and leave it there) AND create a significant value for its customers, this thing is going to be 360-port station with BluRay for three years and will be pulled off shelves, period.

Was the 360 a huge flop based on it's 6 month sales numbers? I don't remember hearing that. Do you? Well then why is when compared they were apart by only 50k units for their 6 months mark, the PS3 and 360. Why the hell is that? Seriously, stop trying to spin this in your favor.

Aberu

The slow start for the 360 was more than justified.

Customers were waiting to see what Nintendo and Sony would come up with, previous generations were stll delivering and there were hardly any games worth getting before Xmas 2006.

Now however the new gen is in the start of the full swing, the games are out, the prices are out and the numbers are out, and what do they say?
The say: PS3 is falling behind in sales and exclusives and by a huge margin (not to mention profits)!

This result is more disappointing when we all know that the PS brand is historically a strong seller. Something MUST be wrong with Sony's strategy, at least for the moment.

Remove the trust in the PS brand from that box and all you have got left, objectively speaking, is the worse deal a gamer can get!

Its simple..

Nintendo abandoned the GC after 4 years and a bit. This means that overnight, the revenue from GC hardware/software sales dropped like a rock.

So, whatever system they release has to sell in large volumes IMMEDIATELY. This places certain restrictions on what they can do:

- reuse CPU and GPU with speed upgrade
- reuse development kits and tools (they are outdated)
- CANCEL late cycle games and put them out on Wii (Metroid Prime, ZTP, Mario Galaxy, Mario Paper, etc, etc)
- retool marketing strategy to sell it as new and innovative

In short, they are trading off SHORT TERM benefits (quick to market, low risk) for LONG TERM problems.. do you really believe that Wii will be pushing 250-300k units a month like the PS2 in 7 years?

I think you hit the nail right on the head, and you can already see signs that this is going to happen. Many of the major titles for the Wii are being released the last quarter of this year or have already been released (MP3, Smash Brothers, Mario Galaxy, Paper Mario, Mario Party, Zelda TP, Mario Party 8, WiiFit, WiiHealth and Mario Kart Wii, Excite Truck etc). What else do they have?

What is their plan after 2007 when Nintendo has ran out of Mario, Zelda, Smash Brother, Metroid Steam? I hope they have more hot coals to be sholved in the furnace or the little train that could is going to DERAIL.

The Wii will burn out, and possibly the PS3 could make a comeback by 2009 if a)their is another price drop b)Blu-ray pulls ahead of HD DVD c)Home is a success d) Hell freezes over.

Yeah, they killed the GC, but it was pretty much dead anyway.

But
- don't confuse extensions of the family hardware with overclocking. The Wii features NEW CPU and GPU; they are extensions of the architecture similar to the way Pentium 4s are like Pentium 3s.

- The Wii has its own devkit. Reusing what tools are still applicable is quicker and easier for devs.

- Nintendo isn't trading anything. They have a strategy to hit the ground running, and it's working. If the Wii builds an install base of 20 million in 18-24 months (which it is on pace to do), then hits 50 million around the four year mark, it sets it up to be in a situation very similar to the PS2. Will it look outdated? Sure. Will the majority of 50 million+ care? No - just ask the PS2 install base if their system looking outdated matters.

Your logic would make sense if it didn't also perfectly apply to what Microsoft did with the Xbox, chief.

Also,
"- CANCEL late cycle games and put them out on Wii (Metroid Prime, ZTP, Mario Galaxy, Mario Paper, etc, etc)"

First, Mario Galaxy has ALWAYS been made specifically for the Wii. 90% of Metroid has been made with the Wii in mind, too.
I shouldn't even have to mention that it ALWAYS happens on EVERY system that games in development for older consoles get moved over to the newer one.
I don't see you calling Kameo or Perfect Dark Zero a Gamecube game...

"- retool marketing strategy to sell it as new and innovative"

The Wii actually IS innovative. It did motion controlled games RIGHT *and* it's selling to a new audience. THAT'S the definition of innovation. NOT necessarily who did it simply first. Same reason people call the iPhone and iPod innovations.

If they had produced a PS3 with a power jump similar to that of going from PS to PS2 and the games were on dual layer DVDs instead of BluRay, and they sold it at $299, the PS3 would likely have the largest install base fairly quickly. Think if the PS3 was roughly equal to the 360 in power and only cost $299!
