Financially speaking, you have to agree that Nintendo's strategy is the best! And it seems to be working.

Personally I don't see Wii to be a competition to PS3, the 2 machines are aimed at different markets that, although overlapping, they are ultimately very different. The competition to PS3 is X360 right now! Those 2 machine are for power hungry gamers while Wii is for new comers and casual gamers (which is a bigger market than the 'hardcore' gaming one).

7 years from now... we can't say! Personally I'm a PC guy but like everyone I know Nintendo is known for delivering quality and we also know that developers support the machine that sells most FIRST.

If Nintendo develops another machine 4 years from now it could be better and cheaper than PS3 & X360, they would be in a leaque of their own even in the hardcore gaming arena, at leat in terms of processing power...
sales will obviously be lagging behind!

@vidguy

If they had produced a PS3 with a power jump similar to that of going from PS to PS2 and the games were on dual layer DVDs instead of BluRay, and they sold it at $299, the PS3 would likely have the largest install base fairly quickly. Think if the PS3 was roughly equal to the 360 in power and only cost $299!

It already is roughly equal in power. Why does everyone hold on to this belief that the Ps3 is so much more powerful? Disk capacity? Ok, given. Everything else? No way. Sony just made the hardware different, and that is pretty much it.

Yes, it is roughly equal to the 360. Actually, I don't care if it is MORE powerful, devs don't seem to want to struggle to unlock that extra power.

What I meant was - what if the PS3 was the same, minus BluRay, and cost $300? That's a winning strategy, IMO.

And by the way, by 2010 this will be a 2 horse race, Sony vs. MS. Can anyone say with honesty, looking that far down the road, finding the Wii at all interesting? Didnt think so.

I'd have to dissagree, with all the money Nintendo is making now via DS and wii, certainly they will want to continue making that kind of money even if it means releasing a wii-update or new system.

There is no way a company that is currently as succesful as Nintendo would position themselves out of the race.

So whether or looking down the road we see the CURRENT Wii as insteresting is actually a closed-minded non-issue.

I think you mean MS and Nintendo, serving overlapping by different parts of the market. Do you really think the Wii is going to diappear?

Oh, ok. I agree with that. I do admit however Blue Ray or HDDVD would be nice to have.

Was does Sony waste time taking a swipe at Nintendo or Microsoft, when they could be devoting energy to making their product more desirable.

They did it here, and they did it during their conference.

Stop complaining about the competition, and do something to dazzle us!

If PS3 had no Blu Ray, but had the same power and was at $300 I would have bought one already and eqipped it with a 250GB HD drive. Without BR they could have put a decent HD-Disk too

At that price/power ratio; consumers (and brand name) would drive the sales up and developers would follow without hesitation.

If the PS2 can seel this well after 7-8 years and not slow down drastically ( its still outselling 360) then the PS3 wil lbe able to do the same. So shut the hell up about sony making a lie. do you want to know what a lie is, microsoft saying they have a well made system when really it has 33% failure rate. screw all you 360 fanboys who come into these comments and talk shit.

Seemed like they had 4 talking points that they tried to turn into 10. This article would've been great if it actually revealed ANY insight. We already knew they are looking at a 10-year plan. We already know that they are jealous of the Wii and will try to be cordial about it.

It seemed like Ryan really wanted to ask some harder questions, but didn't for whatever reason. Actually, I can guess the reason: because we wouldn't have gotten a straight answer, anyway.

Okay, for all the morons who don't get it, we haven't even seen the full potential of the PS3 yet. Not even close.

Take God of War for example. The PS2 has been out for some time, but the first few years of games (with a few amazing exceptions such as FFX and MGS2) were not showing just what PS2 could really do.

It's the games you see later into a console's life cycle, such as God of War 2 and Final Fantasy 12 that really demonstrate what programmers can do with a console.

Not a single PS3 game thus far has used more than 16-22 GB of disc space by the way. Lari is going to be one of the first to use the full 50 GB with it's 1080p uncompressed video and audio. Then you've got future releases like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy 13 that will undoubtably blow our minds, and even then it will still be fairly early into the PS3's life.

Like Kaz said, we're currently on year 8 of PS2, and we've seen some impressive stuff. Given time the PS3 will perform, it's just a matter of time. Like Jack said, they're concerned when you buy one, only if you buy one. PS2 is doing well enough that it doesn't matter.

Besides all that people are forgetting how much of a steal the PS3 really is, given the cost of the technology. They really are selling it for far too little money, but as a gaming console they have to or no one will buy it. Blu Ray technology (and Cell for that matter) are not cheap.

Lastly I want to point out that I'm not a Sony fan boy (in fact I believe fan boys and haters alike should all burn and be banned from gaming) but rather I like all 3 companies. They all offer something unique, and it would suck to see any one of them go under.

In short, Sony will be just fine. Though personally, I think the Wii is in danger of burning out too quickly. It's cheap, easy fun but Nintendo is seriously flooding the market with a lot of gimmicky crap and better have some killer aps on the way (Metroid got delayed another week >

I liked this much better than the MS interview. Sony seemed to beat around the bush less(to some degree) and was less secretive than Peter Moore was.

PSX had a ten year lifespan. PS2 will definitely go for at least 12. Maybe those weren't planned from the start but that's eventually how long they will last.

Is it really so bad to assume the same for your next system? Seriously, if this goes as well as any of the last two generations for Sony 15 years wouldn't be too far of a stretch.

I like how the interview started off. Jack has a way of answering questions straight (relatively) and without too much double-talk. Kaz on the other hand... As soon as he started opening his mouth I was wishing that he'd hand the mic back to Jack. He answered a good majority of the questions directed toward him without even answering them:

Joystiq: We've been hearing hints of a Sony Ericsson mobile phone with PSP capabilities and things like that...

KAZ: blah blah blah blah blah horizontal blah blah blah blah 3 lanes blah blah blah blah blah blah Canada blah blah.

Joystiq: [essentially] Dude, Sony Ericsson?

KAZ: blah.
