Everyone likes to just attack Microsoft! They just cant accept the fact that at the end of the day the Xbox 360 is an amazing machine that offers so much... and to top it off they have the best games out and HD Movie downloads!! I dont think Microsoft cares about the HD Dvd player, if you go back and listen to some old interviews with Bill Gates he always said that downloading content was the future... Not a plastic disc!

Goulet- love it! Ocean's Blvd. would be a great movie.
On topic- I'm glad the interviewer asked the questions, even if we don't expect a straight answer.
Just because it's not good for the company to tell us what the issue is, or the failure rate, that doesn't mean we shouldn't ask. I'm sure that I wouldn't understand the technical aspects of the fix AT ALL. But... if MS could tell us the issue, that would give me peace of mind that they have really fixed it, and not just put a band aid on it. Also, that would give us a little more trust in the company that kept telling us nothing was wrong with the console.

Moore is much more straightforward, open, honest, well spoken, and revealing than any of the Sony PR. At least when he dodges questions he basically says "I won't answer that" rather than the typical Sony method of squirreling around it and repeating the phrase "10 years".

I thought that was a great interview. I do think Joystiq was harsh with the questions and asked a few they knew they wouldn't get answers to just to make Moore and MS look bad and appear heavy hitting themselves. But, if you don't care if you ever get an exclusive interview again, that is just fine.

If MS does indeed have the hardware straightened out, Sony betta watch its back. Cheaper, equal graphics, more games, better games, downloadables, more diverse software, great online, etc. It is tough to respond to that with 10 years, blu-ray, and "potential".

That was actually a very, very good interview.
You have to be a SEVERE fanboy to think asking tough questions is a bad thing or pointless...shame on all of you who don't get that.
You HAVE to hold people accountable for their failures...especially corporations, as they don't have to answer to the people (consumers). At least if politicians screw us, we have a chance to boot them on their ass and try to start over to a degree.

Microsoft REFUSES to tell us the failure rates. They're obviously THAT bad. The public has a right to know. It's one of America's, at least, founding principals.

I only wish the Washington press was more aggressive like this.

I can't believe how defensive Peter was about the PS3. Jesus dude, calm down. He couldn't praise the Wii enough as if it was his retarded child.

-Joystiq- "Peter the Wii is kicking your ass in sales and making an embarrassment of Microsoft"
-Peter- "Oh yea! I LOVE the Wii, and it loves my kids too!!"

-Joystiq- "You are outselling the PS3 eleventy billion to one."
-Peter- "The PSWHATEVER is a F***ing piece of S*** F*** what Sony is doing, and F*** anyone that buys that overpriced mother of a S*** F***ing blu ray player…DAMMIT!!!"

It makes no sense to me that he's hating on a console that is a years off of meeting (ever) their sales and yet gets a big stiffy when ever anyone mentions the Wii which is taking a dumb on the 360's head at the top of the sales charts. Just frickin boggles my mind!

I really like that he didn't take cheap shots like the Sony douchebags did. That just stunk of slimyness.

However, Peter seems a bit out of touch with how much press this hardware failure is getting. It is everywhere I read about the 360 and the only way it's ever going to stop is if MS get vocal about the problem and the fix. Just saying thing's like "trust me, we want to make a good product and I believe we are doing that" (not his words) is not freakin enough! People trusted you when they bought launch consoles and they failed, sometimes multiple times. WE ARE NOT IN THE TRUSTING MOOD ANYMORE. Your "word" is not enough anymore and fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

What a competely boring and uninformative interview. What are you're future plans MS? What new innovations are you brining to the table.(Scene-it? available on Comcast for free.. god I hope thats not it) They have this same attitude like they are the only console maker in business. MS do you realize Sony is really heating up with their games(they are looking incredible compared to most 360 titles) Sony is absolutely killing them in first party game quality.. He kept talking about exclusives but the 360 doesn't have exclusives when they are all being released on the PC. He kepts acting so relaxed and layed back about things but does he realize that the competition(well Sony) is looking to eat them for lunch? They want blood!

Basically, it's confusing to me and worthless. He might as well just replayed MS's press conference. Well as a consumer Peter, let me tell you that I am looking into dropping the 360 and moving over to the PS3 and I'm not the only one. Now is not the time to sit back and admire your limited and fleeting success.

It's going to really interesting after MS has used up all the same fuel they've been using for the last year and those games are released. Keep me interested MS or lose me to the competition..

Ok so, here is a test to prove to me that you are not retarded. 2 questions is all.

#1 - Humor depends on the person and you saw none, that’s fine, but you said my point was just "wrong" implying that you knew what my point was.
Tell me what my point was. (regardless of whether or not you thought it wrong) (Hint in #2.)
#2 - Point out to me “in quotations” from the interview any positive remarks regarding Sony's PS3, and any negative remarks regarding Nintendo's Wii.

After you completely FAIL #2, concede that my point is sound and then shut your argumentative mouth.

LOL @ the 360 not having exclusives.... ya the PC and 360 share most games... but guess what they both are owned by MICROSOFT so its pretty darn exclusive to me

As for the first party exclusives? Which first party exclusives for sony look stunning? Their kinda haven't been any big ones that i'd say are jaw dropping... so far all i've seen is CGI footage of a few with some crappy gameplay thrown in for a split second... it seems people are getting mixxed up between whats real and whats not... even the guys on g4tv noticed it "ummm looked unbelievably sexy but wheres the gameplay"

Its funny how sony fanboy shills easily forget about the "kz2 footage is realtime" ... "oh wait no that one that was prerendered sorry" only to end up with a demo gameplay video showing off completely flat textures, low poly objects and weird animations, kinda weird for a game that sony said was 70% done a year ago.

-----

As for asking questions ESPECIALLY that last one, thats just over the line... why repeatedly ask the same question? Fine ask a hard question but once they say no, MOVE ON TO THE NEXT QUESTION! He wont say failure rates or whats failing... ask about the falcon project....

Ask about if their working to try to bring some of the more wobbly "exclusives" to the 360 ... like MGS4 (as per konami's latest statements with gamespot)

Asking hard questions is great, but stop beating up the interviewee or next time they might not stand for that interview with you again. And sorry but your a tech blog not a f**king money blog, dont ask that last question its just wrong, and makes you look liek your "trying" to be a journalist.

----------

As for the failure rate... screw the question why?

The 360 ... ALL 360's new and old... now have a 3 year warranty? How long is that sony ps3 warranty again?

Seems microsoft might have had a rought year, but atleast they give the consumer the benefits in the end and look after their customers, unlike sony... "we're cutting the price and introducing a new higher end model" .... " but then we're also discontinuing that lower model... oh ya ... europe still gets the lower model at the higher price, happy day"

Shame.

I do like Peter Moore though, he's pretty down to earth.

I agree about the failure rates to. We'll never find out. What I want to know is why in the hell no one ever drilled any Sony execs about the PS2 disc read errors. At least MS is owning up to the fact that they screwed up. Sony still claims there was never a problem with the PS2.

That is why I own a 360.

I can't believe all of the responses to this about how unprofessional or inappropriate the interviewer was.
IMO they (Peter representing Microsoft) deserved to be hammered about failure rates and shady stock trading.

Who cares if he's been asked about failure rates a million times by other outlets? Last I checked, none of them were Joystiq, thus here was Joystiq's chance to ask. He deserves to be hammered about it. Anywhere near 33% failure rate deserves interrogation at the least!! We as consumers deserve more answers than him saying he's sorry. The real kicker being that he won’t say that the problem has been fixed (implying that it isn’t), and he won't tell us what the problem was. That's BS and I wish Ryan would have brought him the pain because Ryan was representing more than just Joystiq, he was representing all of us, including those who have already gone through 11 360's.

The last question clearly wasn't going to be answered, but it needed to be asked. Not as a question, but simply as a reminder. A reminder that we are watching, we aren't dumb, and we deserve answers. The brass from Microsoft gets rich off of the failure rate of the 360 and we shouldn’t ask about it? We shouldn’t care?

Bravo Ryan! Stick it to em!

Just because he works for MS does not mean he has to invest all of his money into the company and never move it. Own any stock? Didn't think so. Hmmm, my company is having problems with their consoles failing.....maybe I should invest MORE money. Or, I could do the smart thing and take the money out and wait for the problems to subside.

That interview started out great and then ended up terribly sucking. Shock journalism for the sake of shock journalism is sad.

I know there's a whole bunch of you out there that are out to get some CEO head because of hardware failure rates of 360s, but most of you don't even own one.

First thing you know, those blown up 360s have had some real USE. They were not 'folding' proteins to cure cancer. Secondly it's obvious that the machine was not tested in 'gamer's environment'. You know just by looking at a 360 that the thing should be treated with care-- yet some people put it on top of other appliances in narrow spaces where heat builds up.

A LOT of problems with the 360s out there were due to improper use, but then again people treat the machine as a 'console', not like a high end electronic device. What do you think would happen if you never changed your oil in your car eh? You'd damage the engine. It's in the manual you say? Everyone knows that?

It's not that simple. I think the 360 is an incredible machine, very powerful yet affordable. It's got games, its price is reasonable and it's now got the best warranty out there. That's all that really matters.

The interviewer was completely horrible in the way he tried to make MS look bad and kept asking the same question over and over again. MS does not have to report the breakdown rates of the 360. Most companies don't. And besides that we already know that they do break down.

Get over it.

At least Peter Moore was straight forward and actually answered most of the questions and addressed the issues. Unlike the sony interview this one actually makes sense and has some meaning behind it.

Of course they're not gonna go into detail on the xbox 360 failure... they will always give you the "canned" answer, specially on a show where you're supposed to be talking about THE GAMES and the prospects for the platform... You could sense the room getting tighter as the interview progressed... And WTF with the final question... What does that have to with gaming?... I think that for a minute there, you fulfilled your fantasy of actually being a news reporter instead of dude from a gaming website... Get your act together, joystiq! Gimme news on games, and your opinion on them, THAT'S IT... Thank you Peter, for not boring me as a consumer with dull-dull-dull technical matters, like how 33% of your consoles fail, and what you've done to *fix the actual hardware problem*, and instead just reassuring me with an extended warranty. I can't stand it when company executives give honest and frank answers to interview questions, particularly when those questions involve defective hardware that they sold to 11.6 million consumers.

I agree that the XB360 is an amazingly complicated piece of electronics. Offering a simplistic explanation of the problem ("The console was too skinny and tight for the high amount of heat it generates, and this heat caused the motherboard to warp and pull away from one of the main chipsets") is quite frankly insulting to myself as a consumer, and to the thousands of engineers, designers and programmers who contributed to the manufacture of this wonderful, flawed machine.

MS can't put their 360 failure issues behind them because they refuse to face the reality of how severe they are and then be willing to pay the full cost to fix them. You all may be impressed that they will spend 1.15 billion for repairs, but that is small change compared to a recall and the lawsuits that would go with it.

What you don't know, and what honest Peter Moore didn't tell you, is that they are still going to sell the original configuration with just one fix (the new GPU heatsink) until they are all gone. These units will have a high failure rate too, although the new heatsink will help.

How cynical MS is, for Peter to say its all fixed when he knows that plans are being implemented as he speaks to partially and insufficiently rework and sell existing defective inventory, when he knows they should bite the bullet for another billion or so and just grind them up.

But that's the way Ms makes decisions like this: not to do what's right, but to do the minimum they can that makes the most sense for MS and MS only. The extended warranty, once again, is much cheaper than a recall forced on them by lawsuits.
