Joystiq hands-on: Marathon Xbox Live Arcade

Being the last day of E3, we were bound and determined to finally lay our greedy little hands on Marathon: Durandal for Xbox Live Arcade. Having been turned away from Marathon's suite thrice yesterday, we were eager to finally get a hold of Bungie's seminal shooter (being developed for XBLA by Freeverse). Seeing as we only had a short time with the game, we decided to set off into multiplayer immediately. There were several maps to choose from, but "Giant Flaming Pit of Lava" caught our eye, so off we went.
Anyone familiar with Marathon will instantly be at home with the XBLA version. The game sports widescreen and higher resolution textures than the original game, though it's not likely to forcibly remove your socks. The action is fast-paced and frantic, even more so than DOOM, XBLA's other FPS. The Marathon engine supports a few more features than the DOOM engine, including the ability to look up and down and quick-look left and right. Many of the game's weapons also support alternate fire. For example, the assault rifle can also fire arcing grenades.
Those unfamiliar with the game will definitely be able to see the influence that Marathon had on the Halo series. Many of Halo's weapons and concepts are direct descendants of those found in Marathon. The fusion pistol, for example, is essentially the plasma pistol. The rocket launcher is nearly exactly the same as Halo's. There are shields, overshields, active camouflage, even the motion tracker is there. Not only that, even many of the maps are familiar. Thunderdome, for example, will be familiar to fans (and rocket campers) of Halo 2's Foundation.
The game is definitely showing its age, but it's also surprisingly entertaining. Multiplayer supports up to 8 players via system link or Xbox Live and 4 players via split-screen on a single box. The maps vary from wide open killing fields (Thunderdome) to narrow hallways perfect for ambushes (Ok, Come Get Some). Nailing an unsuspecting opponent with dual-wielded, double-barreled sawed-offs as he rounds a corner is very satisfying.
At the end of the day, Marathon serves as a surprisingly fun first person shooter on XBLA, and that's without even considering the campaign. There are sure to be some complaints about the dated graphics (perhaps valid ones at that), but for those who don't mind the "classic" styling -- or perhaps even appreciate it -- and for those looking to bone up on their Halo history, Marathon is worth a look.
Update: Fixed chronologically inaccurate weapon statement. We blame lack of sleep.

XBL multiplayer sounds sick...

Marathon on XBL is pretty fuggin Ironic.

So---is Marathon not getting a layer of HD shininess? Really? I wouldn't be heartbroken, but I would be a little surprised...

"Many of the game's weapons and concepts are direct descendants of those found in Halo."
I think you mean _ancestors_, not descendants. Marathon came out before Halo.

As he said
"Many of the game's weapons and concepts are direct descendants of those found in Halo. The rocket launcher is a carbon copy of Halo's."
That entire statement is wrong..
I'm intrigued to see how the 'less intelligent' members of the Halo fan community react to Marathon...

Whoops. Strike that. Reverse it.
Fixed.

Rocketdome (I think that's what it was called) should be a ton of fun on XBL. Hopefully the game will be budget priced.

Thunderdome.
But yeah, Rocketdome is a better name for it.
J8675309 @ Jul 13th 2007 7:14PM
I wonder how much it will it cost....
As a Halo fan, I'm definitely interested, especially if it comes out before Halo 3.
Hey, how about shoving a code for this into those Halo 3 Legendary Editions?
SixArmedwerewolf @ Jul 13th 2007 7:19PM
From what I've found, they're charging 800 MS points. Not a bad deal.

I didn't realize that Freeverse was handling Marathon. I guess they're cutting their teeth on this port before they unleash their formidable casual gaming library onto XBLA.
Neebs @ Jul 13th 2007 7:40PM
Aside from multiplayer, it's worthless, considering the source code is open.
razer @ Jul 13th 2007 8:36PM
Ah, MS the repackaging kings.. Why would anyone want to play this slow out of date horrible game? MS is again asking you to cough up $10 for nostalgic purposes. STOP REPACKING GARBAGE MS AND GET TO INNOVATION!!
Dash @ Jul 13th 2007 10:05PM
Just for calling Marathon garbage your entire post is worthless, hell you're worthless. Calling Marathon garbage is like calling DOOM or any other such classic garbage as well. On the dashboard XBLA is described as a service to play arcade style games along with classics; do some friggin homework before you spew more crap like this, That or you can go play one of the fabulous five games on the PSN. I have access to both XBLA and the PSN and without any doubt there are way more games worth buying and playing on XBLA (and even more worth playing on the Wii's Virtual Console.)
ExMcloud @ Jul 13th 2007 10:29PM
So your an idiot right? I guess Doom sux too..Haha...So yeah I agree they should put the code in the Legendary box
razer @ Jul 13th 2007 11:31PM
OK fella's : What is it your getting from these games that's new?
I seem to have touched a nerve with the both of you since you have resorted to acting like children with the name calling. This is a comment section and I gave my opinion, if you don't like it then pack your bags and move to North Korea. I owned both of these games Marathon and Doom when they first came out. They had their time and it's time to either give them away for free or let them die.. Not charge me $10 for them. Like the arcade needs a couple more 5.0 rated trashy titles.
Buy them if you like I don't care.. Can't wait to see PONG 2007, I bet you will both be lining up to purchase.
Jigsaw @ Jul 13th 2007 11:40PM
Can't wait for this game. I used to play Marathon 1 and 2 all the time with my brother back in the day.... it's going to nice to get to play M2 again, but this time on a machine that can actually handle it! :)

@razer
congratulations you have vocally voiced your opinion on a game but have you ever thought that the game maybe isn't marketed towards you? wow you played maraton when it first came out? that's great but what about the younger kids out there in the world don't they deserve to know that bungie has mad something other than halo? maybe its to bring in a fun multiplayer action to a classic game that will add new flair to the game
waynski1457 @ Jul 14th 2007 1:55AM
i played the marathons about 5 years ago after first playing through halo 1. i love them. then again, i love doom (yes, i have it on xbla). a definite purchase and will be nice to finally play people on some halo maps in their original form. I will pwn the n00bs that are touching it for the first time!!
Matt @ Jul 14th 2007 1:59AM
They borked the Pfhor sprites! They look fugly now, and not in a good way. And the fist punching animation is wonky.
Still, it's gonna rock the proverbial.
AFK @ Jul 14th 2007 10:52AM
If you don’t want to Pay Download it FREE
If you want it to be easy with a new community willing to play MP then get it on XBLA you do have a choice, what is there to bitch about really?
Yubastard @ Jul 14th 2007 4:45PM
hmmm... those textures look mighty tasty!
Chris @ Jul 24th 2007 11:42AM
