also, like i said, why do you think third parties went to MS...$$$$$$

MS has still yet to make money in the video game market.

I could care less about exclusives..it's all about gameplay and graphics. 360 has nothing that appeals to me, that is why i am selling it. I'm gonna go with the high powered system. xbox live isn't all that good either. If i want an amazing online experience, i'll go on my PC.

Ishred,

Gears can't be compared to Killzone 2? You haven't looked at the textures for either game up close, have you? As of right now, Gears still looks better. High-res textures are mapped onto every environmental and character model surface. Killzone 2's environmental textures aren't just low-res, but disappointingly so at times (think PS2-ish texturing); only high res textures are applied to the character models, and even then, they don't look all that great.

Gears has pretty nice facial animations; Killzone 2's are absolutely PAINFUL to watch (look at the sergeant in the game as he speaks and you'll see what I mean).

Killzone 2 has the potential to look better than Gears, but people should expect that given A) the longer development cycle and B) the significantly larger budget (Guerilla's is 22 million dollars compared to the $10 million Epic spent on Gears).

All those who are convinced that once the 80gb will drop to $499 once the 60gb supply runs out: that didn't happen last time. After Sony discontinued and sold its inventory of $499 20gb PS3, did the 60gb PS3 drop to $499? No, it remained at $599. What makes you think Sony will act differently?

LOL, after 4 updates to this story, Dave Karraker still can't come out and honest statement and admit the veracity of what his boss Kaz said on tape. Since he can't contradict his boss or claim that his boss was misquoted, he simply chooses to pretend his boss's statement that production of the American 60gb version has ceased doesn't exist. It speaks a lot to the low professional character of this professional liar. First, accuse journalists of doing a poor job and misquoting someone. Then, when faced with irrefutable evidence of your boss confirming the initial report, clam up and say I have nothing more to say.

"What makes you think Sony will act differently?"

The fact that this was marketed as (and was in reality) a price drop on the definitive PS3 model, and not an experimental budget version. The fact that the phasing out of the 60 gig is part of their overall strategy, and not just a kneejerk response to poor sales like with the 20 gig. The fact that it's a year later and they've already done 2-300 dollars worth of cost reduction on the machine. And the fact that it would be suicide at this point not to do it.

I'm glad they are all finally on the same page with the rest of us. It's still total BS, but at least they've finally admitted the truth of the matter.

Now, drop the bundle BS, and give us an 80gb, with whatever controller it is that you think you still have hidden, and do it for $499. Otherwise, just give up and admit that the company can't get it's shit straight for more than... what was it, 3 days where they seemed to be getting it right?
You know all that stuff you did right before, during, and after that KZ2 trailer premiered? Do more of that, and less of what you are doing right now. Immediately.

I'm pretty much a Sony fanboy, as anyone here who's read my posts knows, but even I'm getting damn tired of this.

I have a PS3 and I think this deal would be awful if they reall pulled this off. I think it's still inevitable. Joystiq had a theory on this before, they got a better deal a mass shipment of hard drives of the 80 gb size than the 60 gb, and don't intend to buy the 60 gb drives anymore since it will cost too much now, maybe more in bulk than the 80 gb. Because of this, and maybe a refitting of their manufacturing centers to discontinue production of the PS2 backwards compatability chip, they are able to save money on production. I'm sure once they finish selling all of the $499 PS3's, the 80 gb model will be brought down to $499 as well, so they don't get any bad press. It would be impossible for them to justify releasing both for the same price with both in stock, or throwing out all the old stock of the 60 gbs despite all the 80 gbs being produced.

To summarize my theory. They were forced into developing the 80 gb ps3s they way they are made now. They don't want to get rid of the 60 gbs without selling them, but they want to sell them faster, so they drop the price. Once the 60 gbs are all sold out practically they will drop the 80 gb pricing to the same price point. I think that is the only reason for the disparity. They don't want to NOT sell all the 60 gbs they have in stock since they will lose money on stores sending the shelved units back over time, and they need to sell the units they are making now at least in small numbers (the 80 gb units).

I'm not real crazy about Sony's strategy.

They introduce two consoles, one at $499 and one at $599. Both are overly expensive for gaming.

They drop the $499 model after a few months saying that more expensive model is outselling the cheaper model, and retailers do not want to stock the cheaper model.

Then they announce they're going to reduce the $599 model to $499.

Then we learn there's a new $599 model.

Days later we learn the $499 is going to be discontinued and they will only be a $599 model.

This is progress?

It's as if Sony doesn't know what they're doing. Plus their keeping their console at $599, despite offering lures of a cheaper model. It's pretty much a bait and switch.

Sony continues to be a PR nightmare.

its a freakin sweet weapon, fun to use

No one seems to be thinking about the bigger scheme here. What if Sony is just saying this? I mean, what I think is, Sony didn't announce this on their conference, and Phil did mention about the price cut. What if this is just a rumor that's made by Sony? I bet they're trying to spread this just to make everyone the 60gb models as soon as possible. Sony's sales are not good at all. They need to fuel it somehow. I think this was a great strategy. People are going to buy the "Cheap and Emotion Engine included" PS3s like crazy, since they think theye'll be limited by stocks, but Sony will make an another announcment in a few months, saying that they changed their mind and they'll keep producing 60 gb model with $499. This is really possible, just look at the last update. There's still no official word. They still haven't made a public announcment about this.

Why would you buy the 60GB, especially if, as has been frequently remarked, the 80GB will go to the 60GB price as soon as the 60GB sells out?

You're waiting for the 60GB to go away so that you can get the bigger HD for the same amount of money. There's literally no value in the 80GB until the 60 sells out.

If this is Sony's plan, they just ensured that there's no reason to buy either system until one goes away.

They lowered the price of the 60gb system only to clear out the stocks of them only to put out a 80gb system at the same price as the 60gb system was. Kaz said that multiple SKUs confuse consumers but MS(Xbox 360 and Vista) and Apple (Ipods and Iphone) seems to have no problems with it. So for insulting the intelligence of American consumers, not truely dropping the price of the PS3 Sony Execs. you are not only tools you are jagbags. Sony one more thing HEY BUDDY WHO U CRAPPIN

The Good News: There are probably 2 million PS3's at the $499 price point available because nobody has been buying the newest Playstation.

The Bad News: Sony is f-ing up once again.

I think Sony did some great things for the video game industry in the last 10 years, but they are done. Stick a fork in them. They are completely out-of-touch with the average video game consumer.

I just have one question as all this "will the price drop or not" is just speculation at this point.

My question is this: Can it be said, with 100% certainty, that the software emulator that handles the Emotion Engine and backward compatibility in the 80GB models is as good if not better than the hardware that handles it in the 60GB model?

Once again, I'm asking for 100% certainty, not personal opinions.

How can it be better? From what I recall, the software emulation covers 82% or 88% of games. Check out the list at the PS3 site.

Sony's pricing has been my biggest beef with Sony as of late.

That's why it took so long for me to buy a PSP.

The thing began it's life at $250. Before the price was announced I'd heard rumors of $200, or even $150 to combat the DS. The $250 came with a bunch of unnecessary crap, like a 32meg mem card (which I planned on tossing after buying a 1 gig stick anyway), and a "cleaning cloth." So I said fuck that.

Then the "price dropped" but it didn't really. All Sony did was take out the extra crap and charge $200 like they should have to begin with. I still didn't buy it. I was looking for a "real" price drop.

It wasn't until the Day After Thanksgiving sale where I got a shiney new PSP for $150 did I bother to get one. At that price it was worth it just for Lumines and LocoRoco. But if I hadn't found that sale, I would have waited even longer for a PSP.

Conversely, I bought a DS the same month it launched, mostly due to the reasonable price that didn't jack me with added crap I didn't want. Ultimately, I could have waited on the DS because all I really played at first was Feel the Magic, which, while fun, I could have waited on easily. But I didn't because the price was accessable from the getgo.

It seems Sony is doing the same thing with the PS3, only even worse. By switching the price and console itself around so many times how do they expect to attract more customers?

I mean, the Amazon sales show that $100 less for the 60gig is boosting sales a bit, but it's nothing compared to what the 360 or Wii will likely see with a "real" price drop.

"If you want one for $499, buy it. If you don't, don't."

It's not that simple though. $499 is a lot of money to just shell out on a yes/no decision. I personally want a PS3 in the future, but I have to work at saving up to getting one, whilst having money in savings for emergencies, all this after paying bills.

It's a choice that has to be carefully made. And now that the 60gb is going bye-bye, the decision now has to be sped up to around the end of the year.

Sen: If it's that much trouble, sounds like you need a financial planner more than a video game system. If you're having trouble paying your bills, buying video games should be the least of your concerns. Fact of the matter is, all these people grouse over 100 or 200 dollar differences, ps3 vs. xbox 360, when the reality is EVERYTHING but the wii is too expensive, and the wii's market penetration proves that fact. If 100 or 200 dollars is all that stands in your way - if it's the straw that breaks the camel's back for you, that proves something: you need a higher paying job, both the xbox 360 and ps3 are out of your price range, or you should buy a wii. Choose one of the 3. Because let's be real for a minute. 100 dollars, in the current economy, isn't breaking your back, and if it is, then you're under 18 or socioeconomically disadvantaged, either alternative bringing us back to why you should be examining your wii options.

Guess Sony thought they could crap on a box and sell it, guess now they're eating that crap.
