Joystiq hands-on: Guitar Hero III

But it's not all about the graphics in GH, it's about the gameplay and music. As for the gameplay, it's Guitar Hero, the look may have changed, but the feel is still the same. We were told that many more artists are looking to be featured on Guitar Hero now that it is such a big hit, so there are far less "as made famous by" and far more original master tracks. The most amazing of which is "Paint it Black" by the Rolling Stones. Also, "Cult of Personality" was actually re-recorded by the original band Living Colour to bring it a little bit more up-to-date for Guitar Hero III -- but it is still most definitely the original song. The tracks already revealed for Guitar Hero III show that the game won't be lacking in the rock department.
For fans of the series and for those who don't know all about the Guitar Hero vs. Rock Band kerfuffle, the transition should be relatively smooth. It is Guitar Hero after all and if you already have a guitar you'll be all set, or you can purchase a wireless one, available on all systems with the game, when it releases. The only thing that could resonate badly for the title is that one of the Joystiq crew came back to the room after playing Guitar Hero, having played Rock Band as well, and said, "It's great! It's just a little lonely." But as far as being a Guitar Hero game, Guitar Hero III looks and plays fine as a continuation of the series. Now we shall go seek red doors.

Does this game include Clive Winston? When I first got GHII I was really upset until I found out you can unlock him. I ALWAYS play as that guy and would be really sad to see him removed.

"Now we shall go seek red doors."
Hahaha that caught me off guard, was at a random moment to make it even better.
I'm looking forward to this, Rock Band is above this on my list, but I'll see where I stand financially...

Will owners of a PS2 wireless guitar be able to use it on the PS3? The wireless adapter requires the PS2 memory card slot.
Truepatriot @ Jul 15th 2007 6:10PM
no because the ps3 doesnt have a memory card slot.
to my knowledge anyways.
jimy @ Jul 15th 2007 6:01PM

Bucklebean @ Jul 15th 2007 6:19PM
Does anyone know if the new wireless guitars that come with 3 are going to work with 1 and 2 if you play them on the ps3? I've been googling to find some info about backwards compatibility but haven't seen anything...
Truepatriot @ Jul 15th 2007 6:22PM

When is this coming out and when is Rock Band coming out ?
Because if both are coming out at the same time Rock Band seems like a better choice to me.
Imadogg99 @ Jul 15th 2007 7:21PM
I heard this is coming out a month before Rock Band, not sure at all.
Would make sense though since I have a greater chance of getting both if this came out first...

The nice man at Gamestop/EB said Oct. 28th for $90 on the Wii. Guessing its gonna be the same for the others as well.
Then he tried to get a $5 preorder from me...not so nice

Neebs @ Jul 15th 2007 6:55PM
This relates to GH3 in it's entirety.
Hoffer @ Jul 15th 2007 8:00PM
I've got a reservation in at Gamestop for both Rock Band and Guitar Hero III. GH2 is easily one of my favorite games of all time.
OTAM @ Jul 15th 2007 10:18PM

Well, I'm going to buy this, there is no doubt...
But... it just seems wrong, somehow, with Harmonix out of the picture...
But, what can you do? I wonder if the Wii version will be any different...
Consolcwby @ Jul 16th 2007 4:37AM
Hmmm... GH3 w/guitar for $90, or Rock Band w/guitar, microphone, and drums for $199?... hmmm... better work HARDER at making some money! =D
Jag0tje @ Jul 16th 2007 5:50AM
As a previous GC and now Wii owner, this will be my first experience with a Guitar Hero game. I've never played the first 2. :(
Wish they would bring Rock Band to the Wii, but this will do.
Kizzle @ Jul 16th 2007 10:17AM
It's funny, I was looking forward to this more than Rock Band...I'm not the least bit interested in Rock Band's "expanded" gameplay options, and Neversoft generally does good work. However, after seeing the comments from Red Octane about how people think their downloadable XBLA content is a "good value"....well, fuck 'em. I'll buy Rock Band instead. At least I know they'll give me a wider variety of content choices as they rape me for extra cash.

How does the Wii controller work with the gh3 controller?
