Joystiq hands-on: Turok

First thing's first, the game is gorgeous. The outdoor environments feature lush grass, moss covered rocks, with a thick canopy overhead worthy of a rain forest. The grass in particular is important, because it will mask your approach. You'll want to sneak around in Turok as much as you can, because it's the only way you'll get a chance to witness its breathtaking stealth kills. You can kill your foes silently and from a distance with your trusty bow and arrow, but using your knife for a little up-close-and-personal wet-work is where it's at. When you execute a knife stealth kill in Turok, the camera pulls out to a third person perspective so you can appreciate the gruesome wonder of it all. Oh, and by the way, those oh-so-important dinosaurs? You can stealth kill them too, knife-to-brain style like Crocodile Dundee. Speaking of the knife, it would be nice to have the ability to call it up a little more quickly, as it's the only melee option in the game (you can't melee with guns at all).

Unfortunately, we broke our cover pretty damned fast, so no stealth kills for us, save for a few with the bow. Don't worry if you blow your cover though, Turok is more than capable of defending himself with a variety of weapons. Most of the weapons come with alternate modes of fire. The shotgun, for example, launches a flair that's handy for pointing out some tasty enemy soldiers to hungry dinos (or for getting one off your own back). All of the weapons have a big, beefy sound to them, too. You can mix and match dual-wieldable weapons. Mixing up an SMG with a shotgun makes for a decent long and close range combo, for example. Propaganda's Chris Haluke, level designer for Turok, told us there will be plenty of interesting weapons, which is in keeping with Turok tradition. As an example, he told us about a sticky bomb launcher with a remote detonation feature. Sounds like fun to us.
While there are plenty of human enemies to slaughter, the real meat is obviously the dinosaurs. The level we played only featured velociraptors, but there will be many more dinos -- as well as other creatures like giant bugs -- in the final game. If you're not careful, dinosaurs will make quick work of your health (which regenerates in much the same way as Halo or Gears of War once you find cover). They can easily knock you off your feet -- you can actually see your feet fly up into your field of view, a nice touch -- and then jump in for the kill. Should this happen, you are prompted to mash the right trigger like a mad man as Turok slashes at the mouth of the beast. Succeed and you'll get back on your feet for a second chance to do the job right.

The part where Turok gets hit by the raptor and you see him struggling to get up is a nice touch. I also like some of the segues into third person for certain attacks.
I hope this turns out. Turok was always a series I felt could be a lot cooler than what they've managed to churn out so far (even including the original one).

I'm going to buy this game.
Not because I love shooters, but to show Disney that we want games that aren't based on Hannah Montana or High School Musical. Oh, and because its looking sweet. :)
generaldane @ Jul 15th 2007 7:26PM
@Tony isn't turok suppose to be dead?
Obie @ Jul 15th 2007 7:28PM
I am glad to see the Turok franchize getting back on their feet. I enjoyed Turok and it's sequel on the N64.
But Turok Evolution is truly one of the worst games ever ( Tobias Buckner...shiver).

I loved Turok 1 and 2 -- It's good to see it back in full stride! With so many good games, I don't know if I'll be getting it right away, but it'll surely be something I get once it becomes a 'platinum hit'!

That dino knife-kill was pretty awesomely gory. Of course, I'd expect nothing less from the series that brought us the Cerebral Bore.

I demand the cerberal bore and particle acclerator!!!(sp?) Game is looking awesome i'm gonna have to pick up a 360 someday when this game hits. Always loved the turok series minus the bastard child Evolution.

I couldn't play Turok for N64...That is to say I played it but I just could never get used to such a terrible view distance. There was too much fog too damn close for me, I felt claustrophobic the whole time. And I don't want to sound like a concerned parent when I say this but...although I do find the 3rd person kill cam pretty cool...I really don't see why it's necessary...long term in the game. Once you've cinematically put a knife in a raptors head a few dozen times, it'll start to get old and you'll just want to get on with it already---like a Final Fantasy or Metal Gear Solid cinematic sequence.

Turok's graphics were actually some of the best on the N64(other than Perfect Dark). Unlike GoldenEye, most of the weapons in Turok actually had environment maps on them(the shader mode used in older games to achieve a shine effect; see the glass textures in Perfect Dark for an example).
The distance fog was used because if the game were to render any more than what was within the fog distance, there would be a huge adverse affect on FPS. The fog was mainly a problem in Turok 2 and 3, and was one of the main reasons why they got such bad reviews. The fog in the first Turok game was more at home because of the setting you were in(jungles normally have thick fog due to constant evaporation of water).
Turok also featured much higher resolution models and textures than games like Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.

Looks like they totally forgot where the "Turok" name came from.
Tango Charlie @ Jul 15th 2007 9:56PM
No kidding. I remember Turok being a comic book about a native american running around tomahawk-ing dinosaurs.
Evan @ Jul 15th 2007 10:03PM
Originally the name of the protagonist was "Tal' Set," and was only nicknamed Turok(the name of the warrior prophesied to defeat the Campaigner). It wasn't a family name at all.
Negativecool @ Jul 15th 2007 10:05PM
Be thankful they didn't go COMPLETELY Hollywood on us and call him "Rambo Turok."
Ken Seang @ Jul 15th 2007 10:04PM
Yea because I have one of the comic books!
Triforceowner @ Jul 15th 2007 10:17PM
This looks like a nice summer title. I'm sure it will be lots of fun, but February may be a little early for a new game with all the big titles coming out at the end of 2007.
Staggs @ Jul 15th 2007 10:17PM
Actually there's a kid in my old math class whose last name is Torok. Coincidence?
Triforceowner @ Jul 15th 2007 10:29PM
Yes
Negativecool @ Jul 16th 2007 12:51AM
Did he happen to have excessively good knifing skills and an unsubstantiated HATRED for everything dinosaur? If so...that's the guy...in math class no less.
ZippyDSMlee @ Jul 16th 2007 12:47AM
Ya.....high tech army forces on dino planet and this is Turok how?...why dose this remind me of pariah...
Turok is the name of the warrior/hero not the person itself.
BTW Turok is some of the best FPS series ever to be on a console(the Halo of its time if you will),sure the fog could be annoying but its the same for morrowind it can add to the game if you let it,its a shame 3 was buggy as hell, Evo was just poorly done but even it had some charm I do not see anything but "in name only "here why do they have to screw over the weapons it all seems like bland knock off realistic crap, where the autoshotgun, wheres the turok wepaons?....*sigh*
If it comes to PC I will give it a 2nd chance until then this is not turok and I would simply rather not play another "wannabe" branded game.

I read that if you see a guard manning a spot, you can stealthily shoot at a T-Rex Nest, and a mother will come and tear the guard up thinking it was him
