I don't think the Wii will have as long a life cycle as the PS2. In fact I think it was bad strategy for the PS3 to focus on lasting for a decade or what have you.

Nintendo should already be working on their new system in 2010.

It won't happen

While Wii is on track to conquer this generation, it won't hit the 100 million+ milestone, because this generation of console gaming is too divided

hardcore and casual gamers were BOTH satisfied by owning a PS2, while many hardcore gamers seem to be dissatisfied by Wii, and the other two simply priced themselves outside Casual range, and you won't see the PS2-as-a-DVD-player phenomenon repeated, since DVD is incredibly accessible, Blu-Ray is still about 5 years away from dominance (and that's IF HDTV is dominant by then), and HD-DVD 360 is an add-on (which universally fail)

well being that the ps2 it's 110 million consoles ahead of the wii, shouldn't the wii be just a tad behind in this pic??

Also, the PS2 had the whole 'ten year plan' thing going for it. The Wii will need a successor much sooner than that – especially because of how lacking it is in the technical dept.

Hate to break it to you, but the Wii is already way, WAY ahead of the PS2 on a week-by-week basis.

In fact, as far as lifetime sales go even the 360 only recently started losing to the PS2 (not that they could keep up with the massive bump the PS2 experienced around this point in the lifecycle).

It will all come down to how long Nintendo can sustain this insane growth. If Wii Fit takes off as much as people suspect it will, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Nintendo hits the sales figures they've been quoting for this year.

I recently purchased a PS2, in part because I was sick of waiting to find a Wii. I got the system, a game, and two wireless controllers for less than $200. Plus there are over 1500 games to choose from, with average pricing of $20 per game. Even at this stage in its life cycle, the PS2 is a great system. Keep in mind that most of the games on the Wii are PS2 ports with "added waggle".

The Wii sold well in the past year because of all the hype around the controller. I'm not sure that Nintendo can keep that hype going year after year. Unless they start releasing more games, the interest in the Wii will fade.
