Joystiq impressions: Everyday Shooter (PSN)

Each level in Everyday Shooter has its own look, sound and feel. The abstract graphics of each level look nothing short of stunning on the PS3. Every enemy that gets destroyed adds a little guitar riff to the background, allowing players to create their own aural masterpieces. The gameplay is easy to understand: simply use the two analog sticks to move the ship and fire an endless supply of bullets. The key to successful play comes in managing bombs: aim for them on the screen, and when hit, they'll send massive shockwaves that are crucial in creating combos.
The musical journeys found in Everyday Shooter are varied, and some will end in boss battles that require even further thought. Along the way, players will be able to collect points, which can be used towards the incredible variety of unlockables. Players can buy extra credits, or buy new filters that will drastically alter the way the game looks. One filter will make everything look like paint, while another will bestow the game with a dynamically sketched look. Like fl0w before it, Everyday Shooter creates a holistic experience that must be seen and played to be understood.

I'm sorry if I missed it, but have they put Doom on PSN yet?

It probably just needs to be seen in motion, but it doesn't look very good from those screenshots.
Sounds cool though.

the point was to make an abstract game that focuses on music and gameplay and not the graphics.
overall i think it will make the game a more immersing experience.

I wasn't referring to graphics as much as art design.
Besides, Geometry Wars and FlOw look fantastic. Why shouldn't I expect the same from similar games?

I know this is off topic, but since it's mentioned in the article let me pick some folks brains. What is so great about fl0w? I've only played the flash version a few times, and have never seen the ps3 version, but I get the basic gameplay. From what I understand the game is supposed to adapt to keep the gamer in the flow of the game. My problem was the game didn't interest me out of the gate so I never got into any flOw. I forced myself to play for about 20 minutes and just couldn't see what all the hype was about.

I use flOw on my 1080p bravia xbr2 as a screen saver at parties.. it autoplays if you leave it alone and shows off your display quite nicely... people can pick up the controller and play if they want to as well.
You need to see it in 1080p on a good display.

It wasn't much of a game just sort of a relaxing interective distraction.

playing with a mouse is one thing, but playing it with a sixaxis makes it a totally different game.
and its not the deepest game ever, but fun to mess around on when you need to wind down. the 1080p and 5.1 dolby surround are just icing on the cake.

As Konny said: interactive screensaver. Completely owns normal screensavers.

I got to try this at the IGF at GDC this year. It's very difficult to understand how this game is fun until you pick up the controller - then you get it instantly. It's the synesthesia that is rewarding. By playing a simple shoot-em-up, you're also creating a cool visual look (the backgrounds are constantly evolving) and a great musical sound. The guitar riffs build on top of each other really well.
Anyway, like I said, give it a shot if you've got a chance and you'll see what the appeal is right away.
