I'm not sure if I agree with him about Pokemon, since it was a digital game first and the card game variant is popular because of it's association to the video game, rather than it's value as a game (it's alright, but not one of the better card games).

I think a lot of the popularity of poker and chess are the variants that you can create. Both games are rather simplistic at heart, but allow for expansive changes to their rules. The same is somewhat true of Magic: The Gathering as well.

But the main problem that's eating board games is the image of them as family games, rather than "real" games. My friends and I play board games all the time, but it's hard to get new people into it, because they assume that we mean stuff like Monopoly.

I really hate Monopoly.

Monopoly is awesome, I don't know what you're talking about. It's the game that never ends!

I always win because after hours of playing, finally everyone is like "Fuck this" and I'm the only one left. It's the ultimate stamina game.

I used to play Magic the Gathering all the time, but then my friends started to lose interest and eventually I stopped playing because I didn't really have anyone to play with. I cried. I cried real hard.

Why don't they make a Magic the Gathering Online game? It doesn't have to be fancy, it just has to be the card game. You could get "battle points" for winning online which you use to buy more cards. Then special tournaments could be hosted to win rare cards.

They have a Magic: The Gathering Online game. But I think you still have to pay full price for your cards, even though they aren't real.

haha i agree with you about monopoly.. "Hey let's play monopoly" then everyone will play cause it sounded fun.. until when you are about an hour into the game.. it can get so repetitive and boring (and if you have other bored friends in the house, they will come to steal your dice, mess up your cards, take money from the bank and give you).. so ultimately the game become so messed up i refused to play and let the bored disrupter play in my place..

and ya, there's a magic online game.. but you have to pay the same real price for online booster packs
