I think the PS3 is doing fine in Japan, you have to take into account that Japan is a land of people that like Anime, and RPG's, and weird stuff...Give the PS3 time.

The other funny thing to consider is that the PS3s biggest competitor in Japan is...the PS2. And since it's easier to translate a game between the Wii and PS2 than the PS3, the Wii and PS2 are fueling each other, as opposed to the PS3/360 dichotomy.

The best selling non-Nintendo games for 6/25/-7/1? Three PS2 games...all sequels to existing franchises. The only PS3 game to crack the Japanese top 30? My Vacation 3, which replaced two of the PS2 games the following week, when DS and Wii games took 28 of 30 slots...and that was selling less than 30,000 copies. That's a far cry from Super Robot Taisen 2 for the PS2, which sold 334,000 copies that week (it's first). The Xbox 360 was nowhere to be seen, of course...because while they have released more games with appeal for Japan, they still have a long way to go.

There's plenty of time for this to change, of course. Sony could rally dramatically...they are potentially releasing games more appealing to the Japanese gamer....but right now we're not really seeing the exclusives that are enough to sell the console. I think it's safe to say that while the PS3 has beaten the 360 in Japan, it's not likely to beat the Wii.

The 40GB PS3 is not true and it is not rumored, some clown just predicted it in the comments section. I don't know why you guys are putting so much weight on something that doesn't exist.

I have yet to purchase either console. I'm still on the sidelines waiting for someone to drop their price before I make a decision. I'll probly end up getting a 360 before the end of the year and a ps3 later down the line when the price comes down. I think there are alot of people in the same boat as I am. I think it's way too early to call anyone a failure, Moore is just doing his job by spinning anything he can. The 360 is doing very well in the US and the PS3 has been out for less than a year and has yet to hit it's stride, but it surely will. It will be a very good generation for gaming and with both 360 and PS3 doing so well it only means win-win for us gamers. Cheers

It's funny when Sony say the PS3 will last 10 years. It reminds me of Hilter saying his Reich would last 1000 years. I'm not comparing Sony to Nazi Germany, but it's just funny that they expect these things to go on for so long, but we all know they wont.

Oh also, irony of Moore's comments make me a bit sick to own a 360 at the moment... That kind of comment is the stupidity of Sony PR and maybe the Windows devision of Microsoft.

Godwin's Law, never thought would have to be applied in this Blog. Discussion over, you lose at internets!!!!

Godwin's Law (also known as Godwin's Rule of Nazi Analogies)[1] is an adage that Mike Godwin formulated in 1990. The law states:[2]

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. There is a tradition in many newsgroups and other Internet discussion forums that once such a comparison is made, the thread is finished and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically "lost" whatever debate was in progress.

I'm sorry, but I really, really think there's a difference between optimistic about Japan and thinking you're going to DOMINATE. I am not getting the latter out of Moore's comments whatsoever.

The company clearly tried some things to get more interest in the Japanese market. There are more Japanese centric titles they've pushed (or even just got by default) for than Blue Dragon and Id@lmaster if you actually bother to look around. I can't speak for their awful marketing and the release of English-only games there...

Yet, what they've done is clearly a step in the right direction. They ARE becoming more viable there, they are working with companies that don't just make Westenr titles, they are selling a bit better... just as they had hoped. Are they becoming as viable as every one else? No, of course not. I don't think Moore was predicting that the 360 would somehow beat every one else whatsoever. I really don't know what people are reading that gets them to that far at the end of the conclusion spectrum.

I do think, however, that they had room to be (fairly) optimistic and given that the Xbox did FAR worse than the 360 is doing there so far, I really have to say being optimistic about the future can (and does) include doing better than you have before. They're managing to do that, for better or worse.

I'm sure they hoped to do ridiculously well there, but I don't think it somehow discounts his previous quote utterly and completely, nor do I think it somehow makes the PS3 oddly low sales (again, considering it's a PlayStation system) that much less of a concern to anyone.

I can't believe no one has called Curmeo out yet. The PS3 can be purchased for just over $400 in Japan. The PS3 price lowest there by far. The Wii is about $220 in Japan without Wii Sports as a pack in.

The 360 is actually performing better in Japan than the original X-box. Initially the X-box was selling better in comparison to the 360 but the X-box's sales declined each year the 360 sales have been rising year over year in Japan. So at this point in its life the 360 has a higher userbase in Japan than the original X-box at the same point in its life.

The PS2 at had sold over 3 times as many systems as the PS3 has sold at this point their respective lives. Sony is failing far worse than MS. The 360 has a 5% increase in sales over the orignal X-box at this point in both systems releases. Granted %5 of next to nothing isn't impressive but its better than losing over two thirds of 3 million like Sony has when you compare the PS2 with the PS3 after the same amount of time in Japan.

In the end it doesn't matter because the Wii is crushing them both in Japan. The hardware sales of Nintendo platforms in Japan are insane. The software sales are even more impressive. Nintendo platforms consistently own 80% of the Top 30 selling games in Japan.

"I've always said Japan is a vitally important market for the Xbox platform and with this next generation Japan is right at the center of the Xbox 360 universe," he said. "Now, as many of you will remember, I have stood before you in previous years and acknowledged our past challenges. Since then we have been taught lessons that only the world's most developed gaming market can teach. We have applied the resulting Japanese education to the development of Xbox 360."

So if Japan is truly at the center of the 360 universe, does that mean said universe will soon be devoured by a black hole?

First off, there is nothing I can say hasn't already been said...but I'm a post whore so I gotta get this out of me.

I can't believe Moore is slamming the PS3 for not being a complete run away success like the PS2 was or the Wii is now. How can he make light of the fact that the PS3 getting trounced by the Wii when the 360 is also being trounced...it makes no god damn sense at all! And his reasoning behind being ABLE to slam them for that? That the 360 wasn't even suppose to do well in Japan so there is no surprise?

Why in god damn hell would you launch a product anywhere if you KNOW it won't do well. The answer is you don't! Microsoft didn't want it to be another xbox. Microsoft pumped millions into trying to get the Japanese to bite on a 360, trying to make it a success. What happened to all that extra effort and money trying to make it appealing to Japanese? THEY failed (in Japan). Everyone that isn't a fanboy can agree on that. The 360 is obviously wildly successful in every other territory, but it is laughable in Japan.
Peter Moore must have his pants specially tailored in the crotch because he must have the biggest balls in the world to be telling Sony that THEY failed in Japan.

He probably just got done reading Sony's book on last years "How to be an arrogant prick while trying to sell your product."
