Nippon Ichi is bringing its popular strategy franchise Disgaea to the PlayStation 3. The two screenshots at the moment imply the visuals will be very similar, both fortunately in style and unfortunately in technical prowess, to the previous two PS2 titles. No other information is currently available about the title. Disgaea 3 is due out in Japan this winter.

Ironic how a game that looks like it could be running on Wii hardware just sold you to buy a PS3.

Please Sony, I felt betrayed when you tempted me to break the bank the before. Give us a PS3 at a lower price point.

100 hours in first game, 150 hours in second game. Bloody fantastic.

You need to really enjoy the strategy RPG genre, though. I'm not a huge fan of the genre and I got bored and stopped playing after 15 hours. I thought it looked pretty sharp, but the music was pretty annoying.

dood! one of the best strategy games ever! ...and ive played alot.
being subjective, the first two had their quirks. the first was really good, but the second added much more width to what was possible. however, i preferred the simpler geomancy in the first game; it was much easier to combo. also, i liked the characters just a bit more in the first game. nonetheless, the characters of the second game are just as good on their own.
i liked the item world in the second game better, but mainly only because you could speed through, or tackle floors at your own leisure. also, they didnt throw you in with level 40 monsters on the first floor of a level 4 sword like the first one did. the addition of tink helped alot too. you will be beaten to a pulp, soundly in both games, but you know what? you'll go back for more. the humor keeps it fresh.
lets see what else? i guess the first game required more grinding, and the second game let you decide how/ when you wanted to go after a challenge. if nothing else, give them a rent and see if they fit your tastes.
i hope they do something about the blurry sprites. maybe they need to talk to capcom. seriously, this is the best news ive gotten all day! now, where's my promised psp version, NIS? altus?

technically they could have put both of the first games on ps1 if they wanted, im sure. considering how many altus games are winding up on the wii and ds, they probably figured they owed ps3 owners something.

I was under the impression that Nippon Ichi was a rather small company, yet this looks to be a full (i.e. non-PSN) title. Where exactly did they get the money to develop on the PS3?

Nippon Ichi isn't exactly the hottest commodity in the store. They make underrated niche games that, frankly, most people don't know exist. You would be lucky if you find a copy or two of Makai Kingdom at GameStop, but at some place like Wal-Mart or Best Buy? Pssssh! And I'm talking about when the games were first released.
Then again, they tailor their software specifically towards the niche market, so they probably know some money-making secret we don't.

Nippon Ichi stated, ever since the PS3 was announced, that they'd back it. It's good to see what they've been cooking up. Plus, as an added bonus, the studio they opened in the US just to translate their games have been delivering upon us tons of excessively niche titles. While very few people have heard or even have reason to throw cash at titles like Spectral Souls or Grim Grimoire... the option exists and obviously, it's quite profitable.
Besides, who's to say this is a $60 game? Likely, it is, but it could also be budgetline.

So what are you paying for exactly..? That looks like you could play it on a PS2. I was kind of expecting the PS3 to have some graphically intense games. You know, since that's what they've been flapping their gums about for the past two years.

This makes me a sad panda.
I absolutely loved Disgaea 1 and 2... but the ps3.
I mean, the ps3's audience isn't exactly what Nippon Ichi has targeted in the past, right? They go for the hardcore players who've essentially played their games before. And as far as I know, the people who bought the ps3 bought it for the fancy shmancy graphics.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I suppose the Wii audience is too "lol cutesy mini games" and mainstream to really "get" this type of game. 'Course, I do wish this was coming out for the Wii. And the 360 isn't really popular over there, anyway.
Oh well, I guess I'm going to have to buy something I don't really even want. These games are the perfect bait for my kind I suppose.

You have got to be kidding when you say that the only reason people bought the PS3 was because of the fancy graphics. Seriously grow up.
The reason people bought a PS3 is because they know that great games will be on the system like this one. The Disgaea series is one of the best SRPG franchises going currently and the Playstation brand has been good to them, I dont see the reason NOT to release it for the PS3.
But alas I am sorry you dont understand why people buy the PS3. I will be picking mine up in the fall to go along with all my other consoles. Hooray!

Maybe I'm confused. As far as I'm concerned, there aren't many worthwhile games out for the ps3, so the only way to make buying one somewhat understandable to me is that people bought it because the system had power, super cool graphics, and "potential."
Maybe I'm wrong, I don't know. But the userbase IS very small. If anything, I really wish they released it for the ps2. If they did, its not like ps3 owners couldn't play it, right? So why are they limiting themselves to a system with a userbase that is small. Are they even sure many of the ps3 owners would be interested in this? They're a small developer, so they need the biggest audience possible, which means making it multiplatform, or at least for the ps2.
Also, $600. Not everyone has access to $600. Oh wait, $500 I guess, but not forever. Maybe later.
Anyways, NIS is a niche developer, they makes games not very many people play, and these people are almost certaintly not the majority of ps3 owners. It just doesn't connect in my mind, why they would ever limit themselves like this.

dont listen to what you read on the internet so much. ps3 gamers are a very diverse bunch, believe it or not. who else would have made some guys thesis: basically, an interactive screensaver into a best seller?
by the time this game is completed and done, then re-localized for america, the ps3 userbase will be alot larger than it currently is.
lets be honest, every person posting in this thread about how they want to play this game, but wont pay $600 for it; these are the same ones that post[ed] the same thing in the resistance threads, motorstorm threads, ninja gaiden sigma threads, heavenly sword threads, uncharted threads, killzone2 threads, ratchet and clank threads, lair threads, littlebigplanet threads etc... if they went back and counted how many times they felt that way about a sony announcement, they would have plenty of reasons why they want to get a ps3.
besides this game is a bit too hardcore for the casual mass market of the wii. it doesnt have the first party banner, so the hardcore wii market could go either way. it isnt aimed for the xbox360 market either. even blue dragon flopped in japan because it was MS exclusive. how do you release an rpg in japan made by the man behind final fantasy and stylized by the creator of dragonball z and the look of dragon quest, and still sell under 200k? if blue dragon sold that poorly, how do you think a /truly/ niche game like disgaea will sell?

Lots of multiple endings. The longest time it took me to play a game like that was 105 hours on FFX. oh, and just last week the Ps3 had a price cut and is now $499, with the soon to arrive 80gb model that early next year would have a price cut to $399.not a rumor. u can go to this link or google it:

Guys, lets just face it. Were NEVER going to see the PS3 at anything lower than 599. Whenever Sony suspects that they have to sell the console at a lower price, they'll start tacking on things just to make the price go higher.

Gah! People! Look... Nippon Ichi Software pledged allegance to PS3 out of the three next gen systems. They are a small development studio as people keep pointing out. They have a hardcore following and one which will follow the trail of the Makai series. So... YES, this could have been done on PS2. And?!?
Basically, what I'm trying to say is this. NIS was expected to drop on PS3 sooner or later and they just don't have the resources to make "Gears of Makai." So they made their usual series and dropped on their target platform. I mean, hell, if we're talking about "it could have been done blah, blah blah," the Makai Series is barely over PSX and N64 specs. I mean, compare Phantom Brave to Front Mission 4....
