Gran Turismo 5 Prologue downloadable (in Japan) this October
After making an impressive debut at E3 last week, it was revealed that the Gran Turismo Prologue download will be available on the Japanese PlayStation Network come October. (Hardcore GT fans have already created Japanese PSN accounts in preparation.) The cars that will be featured in the GT sampler will include some to be revealed at the Tokyo Auto Show.
In addition, this downloadable title will feature two things Gran Turismo HD did not: online multiplayer, and a price. Currently listed as "TBA," Prologue may not be as free as last year's gift from Sony.

Ooh touche. And this is why PC would still victor over consoles: We expect demos/samplers to be free (yes, even online ones, make it timed if you must).. unless it's cleverly disguised as a MMO title.
Hm, maybe if we assume this prologue to be a full game instead of calling it a sampler, it would sound better?
Jacob P. @ Jul 17th 2007 11:09AM
Is this going to be the one with no cars or the one with no tracks?
Konny @ Jul 17th 2007 11:13AM
Well, at least its better than paying $60 for Crackdown just for the Halo3 Beta... there was a flood of Crackdown returns after the Beta period expired.
Josh @ Jul 17th 2007 12:11PM
Of course, Crackdown was an awesome game and worth the $59 on its own.
derrickgott007 @ Jul 17th 2007 11:15AM
PC sucks...I am not going to pay $2500 just to play a game that I can play on my PS3.
Psaakyrn @ Jul 17th 2007 11:42AM
Seriously...
Do you have any idea how many free games (along with demo and shareware ones) there are on the PC platform? If you're really intent on gaming, the PC should be the first console of choice above all others if you can afford one with a net connection. Especially since the PC can also be used to do a lot of other stuff.
Exo @ Jul 17th 2007 2:03PM
Psaakyrn, I don't think so. pc may have sharware stuff, but it doesnt but in the end pc doesnt get as many releases as often as console does, not to mention consoles get lots of pc games as well as many games that never would see the light of day on pc. pc is just if you want to pay more for graphics,a nd then more again once it becomes obsolete about 2-3 times before a full console life span.

First the PSP-2000 now this. Is Sony’s focus shifting away from the United States to Japan? Lord knows, Sony’s treated Europe and Australia like red-headed stepchildren…

Shagittarius @ Jul 17th 2007 5:11PM
Ok, Its sold out again.
GodisaMyth @ Jul 17th 2007 11:45AM
@2...No it is not.. I would seriously doubt that they would not release Prologue here in the States.
This game will make Forza2 look like a that girl that Smokey got set up with in Friday.
GTHD which was GT4 in hi-rez makes Forza2 look crappy with a capitol K.
Forza2, dont you eva, eva eva eva eva eva come back here, again....OK?
Bloo @ Jul 17th 2007 12:04PM
I've played both on a 60" SXRD. You are full of crap (as usual).
horngreen @ Jul 17th 2007 12:31PM
LOL it might make Forza 2 "look" worse but in gameplay GT won't hold a candle. Jesus you're just now getting online with GT and I assume no damage model still? And did I read this right that you might be paying for a demo? LOL boy that $4.16 a month for LIVE sure is a "rip off" eh? You ladies with your $600 console just keep dreaming of GT and Killzone 2 in 2008 or 09 while the rest of us are actually USING or next gen consoles.
synce @ Jul 17th 2007 11:56AM
I see this becoming two seperate flame wars. One between PS3 and 360, and the other between Forza and GT.
Bloo @ Jul 17th 2007 12:17PM
Yeah - It's sad because they're both great games. I've owned them all (except for the first Forza) and while Forza 2 is definitely the best of the bunch, hopefully GT5 will be an even better game to keep the goodness rolling. Otherwise we would be in a stale Madden like scenario with no competition.
Gnome @ Jul 17th 2007 12:21PM
Then, let us all dance and rejoice in the bath of the coming fire and blood of fanboys!
Josh @ Jul 17th 2007 12:17PM
You know, if they devoted their demo team to their other real games, maybe their real games wouldn't be so late, or non-existent (I'm looking at you, PSP-GT).
Incidentally, Forza 2's beauty may not be so much in its graphics, but in its physics modeling, and car modification and customization. Let's see some car painting, GT! And how about penalties for bouncing off of another car instead of taking a corner correctly. Like vehicle damage, perhaps?
When you have to try and finish 5 laps of a race with your car pulling to one side because you bent a control arm, and your engine missing 100hp, you tend to not use other cars to guide your car around corners anymore.
Jason @ Jul 17th 2007 2:03PM
Word Up! GT is the most beautiful game of Bumper Cars I have ever played. No damage, no consequences, not really a racing game.
Jake @ Jul 17th 2007 12:22PM
It amazes me how much attention MGS4, Gran Turismo, and FFXIII have garnered during the last 2-3 years, despite each STILL being a year away. All three franchises had some of their lowest selling installments ever released last game of last gen (depending on how you count the FF franchise), yet they are booked as the absolute future of the PS3 and the reason you must own one now. Hell, with MGS4 they haven't even released a gameplay video yet. Same with FFXIII. Gran Turismo is getting its second demo, basically, a year from its release. One demo a year and then the actual game on the third year. That is a little ridiculous.
Actually, throw Halo3 into that list for sure. At least Halo3 is only a few months from launch. As a matter of fact, the Halo beta is a lot like this prologue in that they are looking to force the hardcores of that franchise into buying a system well before the game they want the system for comes out.
Shit's weak.
Tony @ Jul 17th 2007 12:27PM
I really don't think that if someone really knew what they were talking about that they'd just constantly suck up to GT. There are other games out there that do a lot of things better than it does, although it has aspects it does better as well. If you're going to complain about if Forza or GT are better sim games, people who actually do play full-on sim racers will probably be laughing at you behind your back.
Both are from from perfect sim games (they both have more arcade-y elements... something like GTR2 smokes them both there -- but that's unfortunately "on hold" for 360, although on PC now), but regardless, as far as consoles go, I'd give the edge between the two to Forza 2 right now. Of course, it's a constant game of catch-up between the two. Forza 2 has done a lot of things better than GT has so far and a lot of people seem unwilling (or even unable) to admit.
It's basically already been announced that GT5 won't have a damage model (even if Forza 2's isn't perfect and is actually quite forgiving, it's something), so that's one disappointment already. I expect this game to be good, but I'm not completely certain it's going to be that much better than Forza 2 or the inevitable Forza 3 as far as actual racing goes. Turn 10 is offering great competition here that some people are just remaining oddly oblivious to.
That said, I'll be picking up GT5 when I get a PS3 anyway. I like racing games like this.
Rayonic @ Jul 17th 2007 12:31PM
Without damage modeling, GT5 is a joke. I'm not interested in playing another game of pretty pretty bumper cars.
And have they said anything about how fast their physics engine is running? Well, I suppose they shouldn't bother improving the physics. Gran Turismo fans don't care about that stuff anyway.
Karn Eggie @ Jul 17th 2007 12:31PM
it will be timed with the tokyo auto show, no doubt about that!!!
RobH @ Jul 17th 2007 12:52PM
isn't gt5 supposed to be a premiere title? I'm sure it will be great, but downloadable seems odd. Isn't ps3 supposed to maximize and need the bluray space? If they are able to fit the core of the game and a few cars and tracks into downloadable content, I find it hard to believe the full version would require all the space.
Oh well, I'm sure gt5 will kick butt, just the whole downloadable thing seems sketchy, like how much of the game are you really getting?
Harold @ Jul 17th 2007 12:51PM
I hope they release this in the US ASAP!
coplice @ Jul 17th 2007 12:54PM
The only thing I like about Forza 2 is that you can paint your car the way you want. I hope that will be possible in GT5! A red car isnt cool, but a red car with tag and flame or whatever you want is what make it cool! Even a pokemon lol! I don't care about damage but I hope I will be able to paint my GT5 car the way I want!
Anyone know if we will be able to paint our car in GT5?
don_sf @ Jul 17th 2007 1:12PM
gran turismo has never had damage but is the best selling racing series of all time.
it is perfection, they have never dissapionted. gran turismo is a very rewarding and long game and it should always be like that. now that it has ferraris and damage it should be a better game. personally ive never felt a need for damage because the driving is so enjoyable.
and if it does turn out to be anything like the trailer we saw in e3, especially the 2nd half of the video - then its a generation ahead of forza 2 in graphics.
360chick @ Jul 17th 2007 1:14PM
Some of you guys are retarded and need to go check out the website. GT5 will blow forza away with its real time damage, not that shit forza did. Shit appears out of nowhere. 16 player online, just go read the page man. You guys seriously need to do some research before you come on here and sound like complete jack offs.
Josh @ Jul 17th 2007 1:26PM
Nobody has seen GT5's damage because it isn't done, and isn't even going to ship with the original game (if at all), and yet you conclude that "GT5 will blow forza away with its real time damage."
How did you come to this conclusion? A sentence from a developer?
Damage is more than just how the car looks after you hit an object. It has to affect mechanical systems, as well. Forza 2 did a damn good job at this. And the damage to the cars looks convincing. The sound of the car even changes. When you blow out your windshield, you hear the air rushing through the car.

The bulk of the trailer is obviously a replay from the GT5 Prologue. If you have played the GT series....you know this is how the replays are done.
Man oh man....that trailer is jawdropping.

Forza is a deeper sim experience. It allows more customization. It has more accurate physics.
GT5 will be prettier. It will (likely) have more tracks. It might have more cars. It will be funner for people that don't really want a sim, but want a fairly realistic game with fun arcady elements.
Both are/will be good. Both have their advantages.
I agree with someone above's analogy about Forza being an ugly chick, but with a couple more details.
Forza is a fairly attractive girl with a very deep personality and that will do just about anything you tell her to.
GT5 is just a smokin babe that looks awesome, has a fun personality, but is a bit ditsy and hard to have a conversation with at times. She also just lays there and takes it.
Wow. Worst. Analogy. Ever. At least I tried.

Just time time for the Tokyo motor show..and I cant wait to see the new Skyline GT-R.
FM @ Jul 17th 2007 3:07PM
I meant to say just IN time..ugh.
DNess @ Jul 17th 2007 5:38PM
GT5 was confirmed a LONG TIME AGO to have a damage model only on the most popular cars and the higher tier cars. With 730+ cars (they already said it'd top gt4 in selection) they can't make a seperate damage model for each car. Anyways The first forza was sick i don't like the second forza. The GT series has always beaten every other in graphics so i wish alot of you would stop being fanboys about it. They both have good qualities and are more realistic in certain aspects
pbr3000 @ Jul 30th 2007 11:45AM
I've been playing forza2 for a while now- one thing I like is that it's definitely easier to get a newbie to try it (the suggested line makes it at least possible for a newb and subsequently more fun).
Another thing I like is the pretty much ideal customization (I can't think of anything more we would want in terms of upgrades(including powertrain replacements)/painting/decals/etc/.
My biggest gripe though, is that it doesn't have the best/coolest/most international tracks. It also has a very american (globby) look and feel. Sorry but the GT people have some seriously good taste in design (especially since GT4). I mean when you're going to be spending this kind of time with a user interface, it has to be perfect.
The japanese also have good taste in cities to race in. You have to admit that gran turismo is by far the most cosmopolitan console game of all time. Both in terms of content and the aesthetic they've been developing over the years. The american game (forza2) on the other hand oozes this boring provincial feel.
