Joystiq impressions: Mass Effect

First thing's first: the game is visually stunning. The level of detail in the character models is pretty much a textbook example of what the current generation of video games should look like. Even since its showing at GDC in March, the facial features have improved by leaps and bounds. The eyes have depth and the lip syncing is about as spot on as you're likely to see in a video game. Of course, the real graphical treats are the various alien races, which benefit from not having to tread the edge of the Uncanny Valley. As such, the alien characters seem to have a bit more life and verve to them than even the excellently detailed human offerings. The environments, too, are topnotch.
But what's a pretty game without the gameplay to back it up, right? Fortunately, Mass Effect appears to have that in spades as well. The combat plays out in real time, more or less like your average third person shooter. Now, it's not quite as precise as, say, Gears of War, but the combat is certainly more visceral than turn based RPGs or even BioWare's other real time combat offering, Jade Empire. Characters have a wide variety of weapons from which to choose, and all of these weapons can be customized as players see fit. During our demonstration, for example, BioWare's Greg Zeschuk outfitted a shotgun (from the future!) with freezing ammunition that stopped enemies cold (ba dum bum!). Used in combination with a telekinesis spell, Zeschuk had enemies floating helplessly in the air as he ruthlessly pumped their guts with freezing death. Good stuff.

As entertaining as combat is, the dialogue system is perhaps the real star of the show. Gone are the old dialogue trees and canned responses of games like KOTOR and Jade Empire. Well, the trees are still there, but they are cleverly hidden in a much more emotional system. As characters are talking, you'll be prompted with several choices, possibly including skill based options like persuasion. These choices are not verbatim responses, but more akin to your character's gut reaction. For instance, you might find someone questioning your ability to work peacefully with an aggressive crew member. During your conversation you might select "We'll take him," which leads your character to say aloud, "Don't worry, he'll be safe with us." Using this dynamic dialogue system, we found ourselves actually listening to what our character had to say, rather than simply picking a selection and skipping to the next prompt. A dialogue system that engages us in the story? Yes, please.
Finally, the folks from BioWare gave us an example of the kinds of plot changing decisions you'll have to make in Mass Effect. Having shown us this, they then made us swear never to reveal it, so we can't tell you what happened. What we can tell you is that the decision was definitely big and it was definitely plot altering. This is not a simple "good" or "evil" decision either. There are shades of gray. As the main character, the player must make a choice whilst factoring both its personal implications and those of the overall conflict in the game. Do you do what's best for you, or what's best for the galaxy? Not only that, you might find yourself questioning whether or not it really is the best thing for the galaxy. As Marty McFly might put it, it's heavy. It also makes for a pretty memorable gaming experience, and we were only watching. November is going to be a busy month.

Not to derail this extreme news, but when will we get to choose our own avatars? As much as I love Mr. Paper Mario, his face is getting a little on the tedious side.
qbix @ Jul 17th 2007 7:39PM
I couldn't agree more. I am a big fan of his but seriously, it needs to go.
About Mass Effect... I simply cannot wait. Not only does it seem like a lot of fun but it's yet another title that's almost forcing me to finally get an HDTV.
waves @ Jul 17th 2007 7:45PM
I concur. The column of Marios staring vacantly to the left is getting a bit creepy. Also, this game has caught my eye, and not just because it's a non-shooter/non-racer for the 360.
loungemonkey @ Jul 17th 2007 7:48PM
My question is how do I make it so I dont have to confirm through e-mail every damn post?
Truepatriot @ Jul 17th 2007 7:51PM
@lounge monkey in your email it gives u a password and what email to use.then put that in.
on topic
mass effect cant come soon enough!
qbix @ Jul 17th 2007 7:54PM
@loungemonkey: Don't they give you a password at the bottom of each confirmation email? Unless they stopped doing that, you can keep using that password to bypass confirmation.
loungemonkey @ Jul 17th 2007 7:55PM
Ahh thank you, Truepatriot
Supino @ Jul 17th 2007 7:41PM
If I could only buy one game this year. This would be it.
ill trooper @ Jul 17th 2007 7:50PM
I think as we head into the last half of 2007, we can stop hyper-linking the term 'uncanny valley' and let someone google it if they get confused.
Back on topic, I'm looking forward to this game.
felixlighter @ Jul 17th 2007 7:52PM
Of all the amazing titles coming this fall, Mass Effect is the game I'm looking forward to the most.
bto @ Jul 17th 2007 7:53PM
Between this, Halo 3, and GTA 4, I will have a tough time in school this fall.
loungemonkey @ Jul 17th 2007 7:56PM
Try having a full time job and freelance work on the side, not too mention friends who always want to hangout.
Life is rough.
qbix @ Jul 17th 2007 7:57PM
You might as well skip this semester. On a similar note, I heard all Xbox 360s are being bundled with divorce papers starting this August. Offer ends January 1st of 2008.
bto @ Jul 17th 2007 9:54PM
Oh yeah, not to mention my social life... and the fact that I'm almost done with school.
MS might as well add a list of excuses for turning in projects late to that bundle you mention, that way everybody is covered.
loungemonkey @ Jul 17th 2007 8:00PM
Oh and add a girlfriend and your life is over, especially if she lives with you (curses the day he let it happen)
Meh @ Jul 17th 2007 8:30PM
This is the only game that makes me want to buy a 360 (also Alan Wake looks good but...). It looks like how a Star Wars game should've been, the epic space adventure with lots of freedom, almost "beautiful" aliens and a grand storyline.
Fantastic.
Grizzly @ Jul 17th 2007 8:34PM
I'm hot for this game. I think it might be a system mover for the 360, as it's different enough to attract a new crowd.
Like some others here I don't know what will have to my life come Sept/Oct. GTA4, COD4, Halo3 and the Orange Box – it's too much!
hydralisk456 @ Jul 17th 2007 8:45PM
I am looking forward to this more than any other game on the 360 bar none, I can't wait for it to arrive!
BulletToothTony @ Jul 17th 2007 9:09PM
WOW.... what a freaking difference this review was from the reviews for the ps3.. my goodness... i'm not saying taht the game is bad or anything cause i don't know anything about it, but sheesh, from apperantly the same time spent reviewing ps3 games they "assume" that the gameplay in this game will be great, while on the ps3 they really don't think the gameplay will be good..
you can flame all you want.. and it's fine.. my point it's just that it's a bit obvious who joystiq always cheers for.. it's sad..
chris @ Jul 17th 2007 10:37PM
their not assuming anything, they saw the gameplay in fact in most of these they actually saw gameplay... so its not an assumption its a view of what they saw extrapolated game wide.
jaysins @ Jul 17th 2007 9:11PM
This is the first time I've been glad I don't own more than one console. There are around 30 games for the 360 I'm really in interested between now and christmas which is kind of ridiculous. I'm thinking of dropping out of college and becoming a full time gamer if anyone wants to sponsor me. Any takers, come on :) Mass effect looks awesome and I hope it lives up to expectations.
unosturgis @ Jul 17th 2007 9:20PM
or get your girl hooked on halo 2 like i did so that she is more willing to play games and let me play games more often. WOO!
unosturgis @ Jul 17th 2007 9:21PM
oops that was a response to lounge monkey
Arno @ Jul 17th 2007 10:51PM
Or just an option to turn off all avatars for now. I don't like mario being all over the screen at work when I'm reading the 'stiq.
Jake @ Jul 18th 2007 8:28AM
Dude, I second that. I have to shrink my screen so Mario is gone. Then, I can't read who is posting.
Joystiq, you really need to make this site more work friendly.
SoulBlade @ Jul 17th 2007 10:58PM
i hope this comes to PC like Gears. Chances are it will if you look at Bioware's track record. Game looks hot.
ExMcloud @ Jul 17th 2007 11:05PM
Don't have to worry bout that Jaysins BioWare has a flawless record...Every game they've ever made has been good...And to Bullet Tooth its not that Joystiq likes 360 more but the games that are coming out we know will be good. Lets see Blue Dragon is made by the original creator of Final Fantasy, Mass Effect is made by Bio Ware, GTA 4 lets be serious, Halo 3 need I say more...I mean seriously we all KNOW those games are gonna be good. I can't say the same about any of the Sony games except Heavenly Sword and maybe Lair
Trev @ Jul 18th 2007 12:02AM
I'd add Ratchet&Clank, MGS4, Warhawk and LittleBigPlanet to the Sony side. And Devil May Cry's all around, they learned their lesson from two, they can't possibly mess it up. Killzone 2 tentatively, but I can't tell how linear it is. That really killed the first one.
About bais: there might be, but it varies between posters. I would say they lean toward the Xbox, as does the crowd. Andrew Yoon being called a fanboy in comments for saying *gasp* ps3 games look really good when they do, for example. Its editorial though, opinion pieces, so it's expected.
polyphonic @ Jul 18th 2007 1:44AM
Something has been bothering me lately with character designs in new games: Why does every male character have short cropped, black hair? I first noticed it in the new Killzone trailer and have been seeing it more and more. What's the problem with having dudes with blond, light brown or even red hair? Is it more expensive to have some kind of variety in hair color for male characters? Gears of War is a perfect example, you had both two main characters that were virtually identical except for the fact that one had a soul patch and the other was sporting a chin curtain. And I'm not just talking about white/european characters either, I'm talkin' Wesley Snipes in "Demolition Man"... plus a handlebar mustache.
felixlighter @ Jul 18th 2007 8:50AM
The game will have a character creation tool where you can mold your characters face. I'm not sure what all the options will be but I do know you can choose skin color and sex. I would imagine hair color as well. They have only been showing the default male character.
Jake @ Jul 18th 2007 8:43AM
If you like RPG's, you basically have to own a 360 right now. Two Worlds may flop, but this fall you have Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and sorta Bioshock because it has so many rpg elements. I honestly don't know of a single RPG coming to the PS3, and the 360 is getting 4.5 really, really, really promissing looking ones.
Mass Effect is hands down my most anticipated game this fall. It is followed by Bioshock, Halo3, Metroid, Lost Odyssey (hopefully), GTA, Galaxy, Heavenly, and perhaps Drake's. Warhawk is fun from what I hear, though it isn't a full game, which is disappointing.
riggs @ Jul 18th 2007 12:22PM
"I honestly don't know of a single RPG coming to the PS3"
Then shouldnt you just stfu about it? :)
besighyawn @ Jul 18th 2007 5:53PM
well there goes my November.
