And why WiiSports is so great even though you can play similar games for $1 at the arcade - because millions of gamers now have that game in their home and can play with friends any time.

"I think at this point it should be clear to anyone with intelligence that innovation has nothing to do with being new."

Intelligence is what your post is lacking. The definition from the dictionary for INNOVATION is:

1. something new or different introduced
2. the act of innovating; introduction of new things or methods.

You can't change the definition of a word because it suits your particular console bias.

Where have you been? For the past 10,000 years we have been changing the definitions of words and making up new words.

cc123: Sure you can. The dictionary doesn't create the definitions for words; it simply lists them. Of course, you'll look like a fool if you go around using words in ways that blatantly defy popular usage, but that's beside the point.

Oh, heh. Perhaps I should have gone to the second page to make sure no one beat me to the punch before posting that reply.

Are you guys seriously arguing with me that it's ok to change a words definition like Triforceowner did???

My comment was not on the rules or lack thereof that govern words and their definition. It had to do SPECIFICALLY with the word innovative being applied to Nintendo and their products.

Once you realize that Nintendo isn't inventing a lot of the stuff they are putting on the market you can't just say "uh, well they are still teh innovative cause they brought it to mass market".

...or maybe you can you just come off like a dumbass.

innovation can also mean:

the process of translating new ideas into tangible societal impact
the successful exploitation of new ideas
change that creates a new dimension of performance
A creative idea that is realized

So should the iPod not be considered an innovation because there were MP3 players before it? Should BluRay, or DVD for that matter, not be considered an innovation because there were laserdiscs before them?

Was tactile feedback and rumble NEW things when the N64 came out? No, but Nintendo was the first to standardize their use in console games. Innovation is much more than INVENTING.

Yes. I don't, however, disagree that Triforceowner is wrong in saying that "innovation has nothing to do with being new." I was just pointing out that the dictionary is intended to tell people how words are used, not how to use words. It's subtle, but it's a difference.

Why don't you name one innovative thing you've seen that wasn't already in some existing form. Gears of War ripped off a certain game big time, but it was innovative, because it brought the gameplay to the mass market. Guitar Hero was hardly innovative, because some Japanese game had it beat by years; it just brought the guitar gameplay to the mass market. Innovation is all about bringing an idea to mass market, whether the idea is generally new or not. Rock Band might be the only innovative thing by your definition... But that in a sense stole from Guitar Hero, yes I know they are by the same people.

Well Triforceowner I'm going to go ahead and completely disagree with your idea that innovation is all about bringing something to mass market.

If one person creates something or makes something better then another person takes that thing and sells a ton of it, only the first person innovated the second was just a successful salesman.

If you want to say that Nintendo is innovative because they have made improvements to existing tech then I'll go along with it. BUT selling well does not necessarily equal innovation.

That's exactly what I'm saying. You agree that if we consider Nintendo "innovative" than that really means they just bring products to mass market that the mass market has not yet seen and few may have seen.

It also has to do with bringing something to mass market with a low price and large shipments.

Nintendo is basically changing the definition of innovative when they refer to their products as such.

Get what I'm saying?

1982 was also the year I spawned into de_earth. I understand that I was weighed on the Joyboard. The doctors were confused with the weight until someone pointed out that that wasn't an electronic scale and the monitor was actually a TV showing a Pong demo someone left on.

All you people who say the Wii Fit pad won't be for hardcore gamers... you are forgetting the soon to be announced American History X game for the Fit pad!

Okay... clearly, despite what all y'all hardcore gamers are whining about, Nintendo has simply performed intelligently here - at least from a business perspective. Pleasing hardcore gamers might legitimize the brand within the gaming world, but as for making jumbo profits, prowling the rest of consumers, notably most of the population is just smarter. The Wii along with its list of add-on gizmos are just tapping into a more expansive market. You can't argue with money.

Besides that, if you're looking for great gaming entertainment, even for those of you who hate on Nintendo...go see KING OF KONG: A FISTFUL OF QUARTERS. I just saw it, and , it's friggin' great. It's a documentary about two ultimate arcade gamers facing off... definitely worth it.

I'm offended that the title of "Hardcore Gamer" somehow has been defined that we are not Wii gamers. Jesus, stop stroking your man ego to think that hardcore gamers only play Halo or Gears of War or something of that nature.

I have been gaming for 20+ years. I love the Wii. I am a gamer and it provides the games. Playing Halo for 8 hours a day to try to become a top-rated player online is not a "hardcore gamer", it's called GET-A-JOB.

The Joyboard! Man that infamous Atari accessory has got a history all of it's own, mostly due to an error message on a certain make of late 80's home computer.

so not only did nintendo copy kinetic for PS2, they also completely ripped off this joyboard and combined it with kinetic and called it their own and gets praised like they are pioneers. i am sick of nintendos BS. sony steals? think again... nintendo or sony didnt invent the analog stick either, atari had a true analog stick back in the day too.

and wii sports is nthing more then those plug in play games you see in commercials that come with a baseball bat or whatever.

The name Persuasive Games doesn't ring any bells but I recall the Joyboard as being produced as side projrct by the Amiga folks to generate cash flow while working on the Amiga chipset. The machine was then called Lorraine.

One of the things the Amiga crew did for amusement on long coding nights was challenge each other to stay balanced on the Joyboard in a lotus position. This was called Guru Meditation.

Peripherals that only work with one game always fail (and bring the game down too).. so i hope nintendo starts advertising a few other games it'll work ith before its released.

(the gamecube bongos were awesome fun.. but as they only worked in one or two games they weren't great value. And the problem with 3rd party peripherals is that the developers can't code with them in mind, as they can't be sure you'll have them. )
