Joystiq impressions: Soul Calibur Legends (Wii)

Graphically speaking, Legends is nothing short of unacceptable. If the game could even remotely look like Soul Calibur 2 on Gamecube, we'd be, at the very least, satiated. Instead, what we saw were blocky recreations of our Soul Calibur favorites trapped in boring, poorly textured environments that make the Dreamcast original look like a modern technical achievement. There is absolutely nothing to praise about the visuals in Legends: the art is generic, and the characters are stiff and lifeless. The screenshots that have been released are poor representations on how this game really looks.
The gameplay doesn't fare any better. Legends is a mindless hack and slash with poor controls. Enemies stand around, dumbfounded, as you hack away at them by shaking the Wiimote. The combat is imprecise, and simply not fun. We did appreciate the dodge: shaking the Nunchuck will allow players to make a quick dash. There was no challenge, nor depth to the battles. Ultimately, each encounter was reduced to wild waggle sessions. Wii owners deserve a lot better than this -- Namco, we'd point to Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess as an example on how to properly implement sword attacks in an adventure game (and please learn how to create a proper lock-on!).
If we had to give an award for most underwhelming disappointment of the show, Soul Calibur Legends is an easy candidate. Unless this game goes under a serious redesign, don't expect the first Soul Calibur game on Wii to be anything more than a complete disaster.
[Update: A Namco representative was right to ask us to point out that this is, in fact, an early build of the title which isn't due until later this year (note these were our impressions, not our review). While many of the shortcomings appear to be design-oriented, she said the team was looking to make changes based on the feedback gathered from E3 players. We're certainly hopeful they can clean Soul Calibur Legends up before its release in Q4 '07. For other impressions of the E3 demo, check out Wired, 1UP, and Gamespot.]

This doesn't make sense, I thought the Wii was using old Gamecube hardware? Why should it look like poop on wii when the GC SC was good???
baby sea tuna @ Jul 18th 2007 8:30AM
Because back when SCII came out, it DID look good...but we also had nothing to compare it to. Now with MS and Sony's systems rocking beautiful HD graphics, most of us have seen the future...and just aren't willing to go back.
Ryuukuro @ Jul 18th 2007 9:05PM
This is disturbing. But perhaps this will convince the devlopers to make a better game. I can wait until 08 or even 09 if that makes the game better...and they add Rock as a playable character.
I don't have a Wii yet anyway so I can wait.
StunpalS @ Jul 18th 2007 8:16AM
Wow...finally someone who calls the Wii as they see it...a worthless piece of garbage with crap games and a gimmicky control scheme...what a waste of time, in my opinion. all this next-gen talk and hi-def, hdmi yaddiyaddi yah and nintendo comes out with this system for casual gamers...eff that...poor saps who bought a wii and thought they could justify their $250 purchase...i feel for them
GodisaMyth @ Jul 18th 2007 11:11AM
I dont. I say ha ha. All these Wiiboys would say look which system is selling better.
Again I say ha ha Wiiboys. Ha ha.
psyborg @ Jul 20th 2007 8:48AM
This game might suck but the Wii still rocks. $250 is a steal for such an awesome console. I think I might trade in my 360 to buy some Wii games this year. Super Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 ftw.
MegaMan2 @ Jul 18th 2007 8:20AM
Wiiiiiii!
Do you hear that? It's the Wii committing suicide
JonnyBoy2U @ Jul 18th 2007 8:33AM
This is one game....a game I've been saying for a while is a joke and pure crap.
Instead of Legends Wii owners deserve SC4. Instead of RE:UC we should be getting RE:5.
In short this article is 100% true most likely. And I'm glad hes calling out Namco.
However don't try to shit on the Wii because of this ONE game. As if they're aren't multitudes of shitty games on the ps3. Theres a whole lot more games to play on the Wii than there are for the piece of shit 3 so back off idiots.
The funny thing is that the Wii is still going to be selling like crazy. This article won't change that.
bm @ Jul 18th 2007 8:52AM
I agree with all that you said, but... Nah man, don't try. They know their PSTRIPLE isn't all that (you can tell that they know, nobody's buying it) and that they shouldn't really blame the Wii for this game, but it's -what they do-.
Their ridiculously hyped up playstation doesn't really deliver, and that stupid little Wee console ignores what they think is the most important in gaming (HD & BUMPMAPIN LOL), and yet it's still so successful! It's like a part of their very soul is being branded "irrelevant" while the rest of the world moves on.
This has them too bitter to see reason through the tears in their eyes, and that's why you see them pop up on every Nintendo-related thread without fail, each single time (this proves what I said). So there's no convincing them. There's even a few among the Joystiq staff!
In short: don't feed the trolls d00d.
Matt B @ Jul 18th 2007 9:05AM
Nice try Johnyboy. According to metacritic.com, the wii only has 13 games rated above 75% whereas the PS3 has 20+.
Do you ever research your FUD or are you just a raging drunk idiot all the time?
JodyAnthony @ Jul 18th 2007 9:12AM
well i know that metacritic definitely speaks for me personally. nevermind the fact that some people are so hung up on "WII GRAFIX R BAD LOLZ" that they dont give wii games a chance.
I'm not saying all wii games are great, im just saying just because some reviewers dont rate games highly doesnt necessarily mean the games are bad.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 18th 2007 9:13AM
oh, that and there is a ton of shitty wii shovelware out. thats what the wii gets for being popular and cheap/easy to develop for.
warioswoods @ Jul 18th 2007 2:53PM
ugh, Metacritic is a terrible way to review the consoles - also, there are many ways to use the numbers benefit any system. The 360 has the most games 'above 75', not that it really matters, and the highest scoring game of this entire generation is Twilight Princess, so Nintendo's first party development gets a nod.
GodisaMyth @ Jul 18th 2007 11:14AM
Yes, you are right. The Wii will continue to sell like crazy for another year or so.
But remember this, A Lemming....is still a Lemming...and he will commit suicide because he is too dumb not to.
JonnyBoy2U @ Jul 18th 2007 11:28AM
What are you talking about troll?
As for this game you sony fanboys are laughing hysterically when truth be told any idiot could tell you that this game was going to suck. I've known that from the beginning as soon as I read "Legends".
I don't want Legends. I want Soul Calibur FOUR. I don't want Umbrella Chronicles. I want Resident Evil FIVE.
Unlike you sony trolls I know when Nintendo fucks up and I can admit it when a game on my system is shitty. This is one game. The psTRIPLE has a whole lot of shitty no name games which are not making people buy the system.
So really who should be laughing here? The one whos on top of the pedastal? Or the troll at the bottom desperate for attention?
Rubang B @ Jul 18th 2007 3:15PM
Metacritic is no way to compare the consoles. It is an average of review scores. Video game reviewers are by definition hardcore gamers who rarely understand the casual market. They compare games like Cooking Mama and Wii Play to Halo 2, because that's all they know how to do. They are threatened by the Wii's new control schemes and they don't understand its success.
You expect me to believe that only 18.6% of Wii games are good, while 50% of PS3 games are good? Exactly half of the PS3 games are in the green. That's TOTAL BULLSHIT. Reviewers give PS3 games an average of 75-76 if it's mediocre, but they penalize mediocre Wii games with a 50 or 60 because they compare the graphics to PS3, and because sometimes they don't "get" the controls.
If you want to get some useful information out of Metacritic, count the games. Right now it lists 70 Wii games and 54 PS3 games. This is all the proof you need that in under a year several developers have already moved their development resources from the PS3 to the Wii.
(There aren't even 54 disc-based games on the PS3. They count Motorstorm twice, and they list the following PSN titles: Super Starudst HD, Calling All Cars, the GT "HD Concept", flOw, Go! Puzzle, Lemmings, Super Rub-a-Dub, Blast Factor, and Tekken 5. So in reality, if you walk into a store, there are 70 Wii games to choose from and 44 PS3 games. That is what Metacritic is useful for.)

the strange part is that some previews (including sites like ign) said that they had good impressions with this game O.o
must be one of those "hate or love" games
Slvrgun @ Jul 18th 2007 1:34PM
Don't lie, I remember you saying when it first came out that it was going to be an "awesome game that utilizes the Wii and the Wiimote like it should be".
JodyAnthony @ Jul 18th 2007 8:34AM
actually they were calling the game garbage, not the console. But i forgot, you are a worthless fanboy so to you if a console doesnt have your name of choice stamped on it, it's trash.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 18th 2007 8:35AM
that was supposed to be to StunpalS.
StunpalS @ Jul 18th 2007 8:45AM
i wouldnt say that i am a fanboy. i do own both the PS3 and Xbox 360. i wouldnt dare spend my hard earned money on a system that shouldve been dated for release some time in the late 90's. i have the bomb Sony SXRD 1080p setup so why would i even waste a second playing a game that looks like it should have been developed for say, an atari or even regular nintendo. get off of nintendos teet and join the next-gen...the true next gen, fellas. or, just sit at home with your frying pan attachment and "fake" cook some shit on cooking mamas BS game. that sounds like a slammin' good time to me
bm @ Jul 18th 2007 8:59AM
StunpalS:
LOL, what are you, 14?
JodyAnthony @ Jul 18th 2007 9:04AM
you are still a fanboy. you just happen to be a fanboy for two consoles instead of one.
me, im a fanboy of all consoles (and handhelds). i love video games no matter what console they are played on. sorry im not cool enough to pretend that im better than everyone else because I dont buy a certain toy like you.
StunpalS @ Jul 18th 2007 9:13AM
BM...how many 14 year olds do you know of that have Sony SXRD TVs and "spend their own hard earned money". I must have left that out of my post. No, LOL, (me being facetious) i guess i didnt, clearly its right there. Im not 14, but that was a whitty comeback, BM. 14 year olds play Wii...or at least thats who it is marketed to. 14 year olds and geriatrics...awesome demographics...
JodyAnthony @ Jul 18th 2007 9:15AM
then what are ps3/360 marketed to?
I'm 23 and I play wii, so does my 30 year old wife, my 22 year old best friend, and my bandmates that range from 24 to 29.
samfish @ Jul 18th 2007 9:22AM
Yeah, but you had your brain swapped out for that of a 14 year olds, judging by your insecurities.
Randy @ Jul 18th 2007 9:51AM
StunpalS: You might be sure surprised how many rich snobby 14 yr olds there are in the world that can spend their own money. And they don't know what "hard earned" really means. There's gotta some reason you're at home in the middle of the day and not working, and I would guess it's because you are on Summer Break from High School.
baby sea tuna @ Jul 18th 2007 9:55AM
I've gotta ask, why are you so hung up on this? Did you build the waggle wand's accelerometers? Do you own massive amounts of Nintendo stock or something? I just don't get how you can be such a steadfast defender of a console that has yet to debut a decent game that isn't either a tech demo, mini-game collection, or last-gen port...9 months into its lifecycle.
If you love video games as much as you say, you shouldn't just let all this shit slide. You should want more out of your games and instead of constantly talking about how other people are brand-blinded to their consoles' faults, take Nintendo to task for their own missteps.
bm @ Jul 18th 2007 9:55AM
StunpalS:
Listen. Don't you think it says something about YOU, rather than ME, when people who can't see your face think you are 14 by the way you talk and the things you say?
Think about that for a moment, if that isn't too difficult for you.
StunpalS @ Jul 18th 2007 10:03AM
Randy: to you i say, "nay". im not 14, not on summer break and not at home. im at work, and took a few minutes of my day to check out various sites...joystiq, destructoid, x3f, ps3fb as well as some gaming comics like penny arcade, ctrl-alt-del and the like. so, you can judge and assume that i am 14, thats fine, ill sleep okay at night. it doesnt really bother me. i guess maybe my comments were misconstrued. i am sick of lame ass games being released for this revolutionary system simply because it is the most popular of the three and no one can find one anywhere. if i were a dev, i would be ashamed that a review like this came out for a game. fanboyism or not....i love gaming, and i like things that look good as well as are fun to play. the wii falls short in the first category, so it just doesnt grab my attention. that is all.
bm @ Jul 18th 2007 9:58AM

Harsh.
Is it really that bad? This is the same guy that says MP3 graphics are underwhelming.
Also, how far along is this game in development? This could be a pre-alpha build, for all we know.
I applaud calling a spade a spade, and if the game really is this bad then it needs to be called out so hopefully namco makes a decent game, not crap in a krispy kreme.
Raikage @ Jul 18th 2007 1:06PM
I agree, a bad game is a bad game, no matter what system it's on.
Cluckyx @ Jul 18th 2007 8:46AM
StunpalS just cracked me up.
This game looks rushed. I'll be passing this one by I think.
For shame Namco.
Crrash @ Jul 18th 2007 8:56AM
how come "the lead PlayStation writer" is allowed to make articles about wii games?
sure the game doesnt look great, but it isnt looking as bad as he makes it seem like and it isnt even finished...
sure it can be a mindless hack'n'slash, doesnt the PS have a fair share of those? i think we want such games too once in a while.
Andrew Hsieh @ Jul 18th 2007 9:08AM
Unfortunate. I was really looking forward to this game, too. :/
Actually, I thought you were joking at first with the first paragraph, Andrew Yoon, but I guess you weren't. Really unfortunate, though, that any greatness stemming from this game probably wasn't meant to be.
Ocho @ Jul 18th 2007 9:13AM
I'm sensing a lot of extraneous console envy/insecurity around here. I thought we all were reading this site because we enjoyed games, not the corporate entities who manufacture them.
Anyhow, sorry to hear this one isn't looking good. I'm sure it was more feasible to make more detailed characters and sets when they were confined to just two models fighting in a single setting.
Also, I think any developer that takes an already existing game concept and just tries to map it on to the Wii's control scheme is going to come up with similarly underwhelming results.
JodyAnthony @ Jul 18th 2007 9:14AM

Phranctoast @ Jul 18th 2007 9:18AM
After the popularity of wii sports, the developers just figured.."why bother with great graphics" jk ;)
This proves that developers are going to tack on the controls to games that really dont belong on the wii. Im not ethusiastic of the way nintendo want to revolutionize gaming. At least there are other choices.
samfish @ Jul 18th 2007 9:28AM
Games that don't belong on the Wii?!
If a hack 'n' slash doesn't belong on the Wii, I don't know what does.
ephor @ Jul 18th 2007 9:21AM
Compare this preview to the previews at gamespot, 1up, and ign
- THIS is why news blogs aren't taken seriously.
zwarrior @ Jul 18th 2007 9:22AM
Brutlessly honest. Everyone here should have expected the game to not turn out so great, it's Namco's late cash in to the Wii's success
Konny @ Jul 18th 2007 9:31AM
Is anyone surprised? The one and ONLY good platformer on Wii will be SMG.. and that took 6 years to make... reviewers have already begun complaining about the broken controls.
Also, expecting SC3 caliber graphics is stupid.. SC proper is a one on one fighter.. not an arena hack and slash.. of course the graphics are gonna take a tumble. The first step for Wii is to make a game with graphics as good as God of War for.... PSP! lmao
Wii owners have absolutely NOTHING to look forward to in terms of hack and slash platforming on par with Heavenly Sword or Ninja Gaiden Sigma. Have fun with your WiiFit and WiiBoard and WiiZapper .. LOL
