MTV's Nickelodeon spending $100 million on gaming
Nickelodeon, former network of You Can't Do That on Television and Double Dare, announced they will be spending -- keeping the zeros in for effect -- $100,000,000 to become the top provider of casual games and master of casual game sites. Oh, and that $100 million isn't over many rotations around the sun either, that's just in the next two years for "development, distribution and creation."If you're attempting to put two and two together at the moment on why Nickelodeon ... remember how obsessed you were with Nickelodeon as a child? Well, things haven't changed much, so by investing in games for their 8 -14 demographic, MTV networks can gateway drug potential casual gamers into other divisions of their vast media empire. This MTV gaming focus is nothing new, they have been gobbling up many gaming properties in recent years like Xfire, GameTrailers and the purchase of Harmonix, creators of potential mega-hit Rock Band. Nickelodeon should begin showing signs of this master plan later next year.

Wait what? MTV owns Nickelodeon? Explains why Daria is on Noggin. Ahh the old classic Nick shows like that Maya bee and Rugrats. Occasionally watch the Butch Hartman shows and Kappa Mikey.

Just what the Wii needs, more crappy mini games and shovel ware... or as I call it, s*** ware.

So did Viacom officially change their name to MTV, or are we just trying harder to vilify the conglomerate by referring to it by their most hated property? Not that I have any sympathy for the piece or the whole, but... c'mon.

you can't do that on television ... wow, blast from the past. nickelodeon used to have some gems.
how about that science show that came on at 5:30am? or the animated vampire show set in transylvania that came on right after that? or the videogame show?
Hey Dude! Salute your Shorts! Ren and Stimpy, Rocko's modern life. Are you afraid of the Dark? Alex Mack and Clarissa were hot!
what the hell happened to nickelodeon?
3cubedminus3squared @ Jul 18th 2007 7:36PM
Nothing happened except that you grew up. The shows out now appeal to these kids.
Its strange I know but since I don't watch anymore it doesn't matter.
colin @ Jul 18th 2007 8:09PM
yeah, i guess you are right ... nostalgia is a crazy thing. but i think i would sit through an episode or two of hey dude or salute your shorts, if only for history's sake.
Richard @ Jul 18th 2007 9:23PM
Whoa, what vampire show? I don't seem to recall anything like that.
colin @ Jul 18th 2007 10:40PM
i can't remember the name of it ... but it came on early in the morning ... it was set in translyvania ... it was animated ... the rest is really fuzzy. i'll do some research.

While $100 mil is definitely a lot of money, aren't big-time titles on the 360 & PS3 around $50 mil to develop?? I'm honestly asking cause i don't really know. But as far as video game development goes, i can't imagine it will turn into THAT many games.
Petrie @ Jul 18th 2007 8:51PM
Nah, even titles like Gears of War and such run nowhere near 50 million in development costs. I believe Gears was around 12 mil or so.
